My husbands xs max has the sharp edges as well. It’s pretty noticeable, his antenna bands also feel deep. Where as on my max I can’t feel the antenna bands on the side or the edges. Definitely odd.

Could some post photos of this? Would probably be a good visual for some to have. I would be interested in seeing some if possible.

I’ve had this issue as well. Apple called and said their engineering team wants the phone back and offered a free replacement, but that I’d have to ship mine back first and that it would take a week to get the new one.

I told the rep, “No way”. I can’t be without a phone for a week+. He said he’d call back to see if they could do an express replacement.

If I don’t hear good news today, I’m heading to the Apple Store tomorrow.

I’m in Southern California BTW.

Good luck to all those affected!!

Well here’s my update on this situation...
Took it to Apple today and at first they kinda made me feel like i was crazy for bringing it in for that specific issue but after talking to a few different workers they started really noticing it. The lady who helped me noticed it more as she was holding it getting my information off it. I was lucky enough to just walk in and find a replacement. They did say someone else on launch day ask for a replacement due to rough edges.

That’s exactly where mine was.

How was your replacement? Need to check first if there's stock in our Apple Store for an iPhone Xs Max Gold and I'll stop by tomorrow, I noticed that after hours their stock becomes "Unavailable" but if you check regular hours it will show that they have phones in stock.

So it turns out that whilst I thought I had a pretty good unit free of defects, taking my phone out the case tonight, I realized that I can slide a piece of paper between the plastic gasket that surrounds the screen and the metal chassis of the XS Max.

I immediately put the phone in its case when I got it so I never felt the terribly rough edge at the top. I have a gold one too.

I am bummed because I feel like getting it replaced will mean playing the ‘first batch lottery.’ Almost want to return it and get it again in a month or so?

What worries me is the water resistance at this point. Not that I plan on using it in the shower and I have yet to drop my phone in the pool but if it had to happen, I have no doubt it’d be with the unit that’s not perfectly sealed.

Replacement is good to go. Immediately when the person helping me took it out she handed it to me to inspect and make sure it was good. I don’t use a case so that’s the main reason I went to get a replacement.

I have an XS.

I can fit a piece of paper between the stainless steel bezel and the screen/glass. It goes in by 1-2mm.

That isn't right, is it?

Every year I promise myself I won't read these forums because I swear we find more wrong with out phones than if we just had them with no external information.

The front of mine is not smooth at all, if I run my finger from the front screen over the side and onto the back I can feel a lip on the front where the front screen is not flush with the side. However, if I go from back to front it's very smooth and I don't feel anything.

Is this okay? I'm not arsed about the aesthetics, I have a perfect white screen I don't want to replace it, however, I'm worries about being waterproof and sealed.

That was one of the main issues i was thinking while debating taking mine to Apple. The other reason was just overall felt rough holding it in my hand. if my phone moved around slightly i could feel the bottom corner almost poking my palm.

I didn't even notice it until now.

Nope, I just asked a person in the office who has an XS and they tested and cannot do that. Spacing like that cannot be normal nor good for seal.

Your risk to take at the end of the day. You could keep it and all could be fine or you could keep it and down the road you find out your deal was defective.

I also understand returning it opens you to the return roulette. Only a decision you can make.

To those feeling the "rough" edges, did you try wiping it with a dry cloth? I opened my phone and checked out the edges and the left side felt rough - but it turns out it was just adhesive that seems like it came from the plastic covering being misaligned. After wiping it down it now feels pretty smooth.

Could be a different issue, but I know at first I thought I had this problem but it turns out I didn't.

They replaced the device but the 2nd was the exact same. The Apple store staff were very nice about it but they were implying the gap is by design.

I returned the device on the IUP.

So... I went to the Apple Store to have mine exchanged. Of course, I was ready for the crazy stare they'd give me and sure enough I got it. They've checked the phone and one of the Genius guys said it's "normal" and "they use different manufacturers that sometimes the build quality will vary from one manufacturer to another". I did not accept that kind of answer.

They also did not want to do a swap on the spot, they gave me the run-around that I'll be locked up and can't get the replacement today because AT&T will lock my account etc. I asked to give it a try. They were hesitant as if it's a burden to them. Last time I checked it's their job to do so.

They did a return on the phone but did not even attempt to get me a new one. I went home empty handed. I went online and checked If I was locked out but I wasn't! I was able to place an order for pickup today.

Not a good Apple store experience. I used to love going to the Apple Store but that's not the case anymore. They're only nice to you when buying expensive items but when dealing with issues with their products they look at you like crazy.

Wow that’s a bad experience. Make sure you do the feedback and answer it very honestly. You shoulda had them go over to a demo model to compare. I mentioned that we could compare my xs max to their demos and they didn’t even need to. My store was very helpful.

They did compare it with the store demo, they acknowledged that it is rough but they were hesitant to do a swap.

When car manufacturers release a new generation model, statistically, the first couple of years exhibit the most issues. That's why it's always wiser to buy the latest production model of a given generation. Of course, the trade-off is that by that when you buy the latest year of a generation, the release of a newer generation model is just around the corner, which means that you're left with an old (but reliable) car.

Smart phones aren't much different. Apple worked out nearly all imperfections and issues with the iPhone 6/6S/7/8 design. No surprise, my iPhone 8 was flawless in design. It was literally the most issue-free iPhone I ever had and I still maintain that they perfected it.

I suspect the X/Xs design needs a few more years to work out all the common problems we're seeing. And given that Apple has never made a big phone like the Max before, it makes sense that it would be plagued with most problems.

Then again, at $1,100, it's borderline unacceptable. After all, it's the Rolls Royce of phones (supposedly).

Hi all,
I have this on the end of my Xs Max, it’s polished in the Center but on the corners it’s as if the polishing just stopped and the corners look all scruffy. There is a clear line of stop start.
Seems like a manufacturer issue.
