I have a 16gb iPad mini and found the storage to be tight. I figured with retina model its only going to get worse so I went with the 32gb. It will allow me to have a couple of movies and my music and my apps.

have about 3 pages worth of apps and less than a gig left. i either need to dole out another 100 bucks or apple needs to make the starting storage 32 gb.

I ran out of gas halfway across the country. It's Hyundai's fault for not making a bigger gas tank!!!

A better comparison would be that you used to have a Hyundai that had 'adequate' mileage before you had to fill up again. You then bought the 'S' model which uses up four times as much fuel, but has the same size tank. Fit for purpose? Probably not.

16GB base is fine. 100$ for 32Gb isn't. (edit: well in fact its 100$ for +16GB)
What do other manufacturers charge for the upgrade? 40$ maybe?

Even 40$ is way above the price it costs them.

Sadly they get away with it. Some people are even defending them.

And i would probably pay it too, if i was buying one right now.. Because 16GB is not enough for me.

becuz ppl r willing to pay for the extra storage = apple will never lower the cost of extra storage. $100 for 16gb is just too much IMO

I just checked how I was doing on space and was quite surprised to see I have already used 16GB in apps alone. Downloading all those Free Apple apps such as keynote, pages, garage band, photo booth etc. along with iOS 7 they really take up a lot of space which I didn't anticipate. I don't even have any photos or music on my iPad yet and may start deleting some of the apps such as keynote that I probably will never use.

Now we know why they are "free".. :p

No problem at all with 16gb here. With Home Sharing across wifi, everything streams from my Mac fast and smoothly. Even apps are in the cloud can be downloaded quickly.

If it's storage you want, get an iPod or subscription to Dropbox. Storage is not what makes this tablet uniquely advanced, and Apple makes a killing in fueling fears of storage inadequacy. It's really about the advanced design, architecture, and functionality.

And finally, why pour tons of money into storage at insane costs when you know it'll be outdated in 2 years, and you'll be yearning for the next generation?

Storage size is the same for non-retina and retina iPads, but retina iPads have four times the resolution (meaning much larger apps) but still have the same starting storage size.

That kinda is Apple's fault. Bad planning at the very least. It stands to reason that someone will be able to store next to nothing on a 16GB retina device compared with a non-retina device.

That still doesn't make it apples fault at all. It's no different than car companies offering a base-model car with inferior power output and performance compared to their higher offering. Most of the time the base-model cars can barely get up to speed.

You want better performance, pay up, or wait for it to become the next standard.

Yes, it does make it Apple's fault when they are offering a storage size that's barely fit for purpose.

Most people won't know how much storage they're going to use up until they've actually bought one.

So ignorance makes it the manufacturer's fault now? Good one.

How many people do you really think go and look at the size of apps on the app store before they buy an iPad?

Most people would trust Apple to come up with appropriate storage sizes.

I agree with this. Apple's strategy is built around offering thousands of apps, with a good percentage free. Yet entices the public with a marketing campaign touting its lowest priced storage model.

If only apple didn't charge $100 extra for a mere 16gb of memory, which you can pick up for less than $10. I think iPads should start with a minimum of 32Gb, I mean after all it is a content consumption device.

Typically when the cost breakdown is released the second from the bottom laptop, iPad, iPhone are the best value. 64/128 will be utter rip-offs.

It all depends in how you're going to use it.

32gb is starting to seem kinda small to be but I was on a budget and wanted to get cellular data as well.

Plus with something this powerful you're more inclined to buy stuff to put on the tablet. I just spent about $80 buying movies and apps to play with in my new retina mini. Blowing $80 in iTunes is unprecedented to me.

well....16 gb was a mistake

With the second from the bottom iPhone/iPad you pay £100 for 16GB extra storage.

With the top iPhone/second top iPad you pay £100 for 32GB extra storage. (or £200 for 48GB extra = £100 per 24GB)

With the top iPad you pay £100 for 64GB extra storage. (or £300 for 112GB extra = £100 per ~37GB)

Quite clearly that shows 128GB iPad/64GB iPhone = best value.

self evident.

i don't see how.
you think that "Apple's strategy is built around offering thousands of apps, with a good percentage free" and the fact that they advertise that their lowest price is a bad thing?

What company doesn't advertise their products as "starting at x" or "as low as y?"

No, you're missing the point a bit, and that's ok. A few of us here are saying with all the thousands of apps Apple has made available, the entry level 16gb is a bit underpowered. Because of this, many are saying the base model should be 32gb.

That's all, agree with it nor not. It's an opinion.

i'm not sure that point was particularly subtle. if you don't value the 16 or 32gig ipad at the price they are asking, then don't buy it. what it "should" cost is what the market will bear.

Whatever you say. Sorry if it wasn't subtle enough for ya :).
