Good for Chris Pricko. I'm delighted with mine, it's a lovely looking, solid iPhone. The notch is fine, without it, would be fine. Don't care at all. Currently it defines it as an iPhone X, and that's something almost ALL other phones lack at the moment - identity and character.

Aside from that, the phone itself is intuitive and easy to use. Far better than the 2 year old SE I just sold for significantly more than you'd get for a used Android right now, even one that's just 6 months old.

His iPhone videos are cringe worthy, but I saw a recent video of him complaining about how scratching the screen on his Pixel 2 XL is not his fault. Equally if not even more whiny. I find some level of entertainment in his content though.

*Blames and slanders Google for him scratching his own phone
*Threatens to slander Google
*Tries to raise money for an iPhone X but "fails"
*Eventually uses a tiny fraction of his fans' donations to buy an iPhone X

Disappointing in one sense, but in another I can see him doing a video on the X (whether positive or negative). What I don't get and it definitely rubs me the wrong way is that I'm sure he makes plenty of money on his videos, and subscriptions yet he's asking his fans for donations. Not sure I'm liking that move at all.
That kind of rubs me the wrong way, too, but not my circus, not my monkeys. So I’ll leave it between him and his fans how he gets his next iPhone.

I just am getting a little tired of his superior attitude against people who do see value in the IPhone X. Not necessarily in his videos, the latest of which I’ve not yet seen, but in his comments to people under the video.

Now don’t get me wrong, I think the iPhone X is legitimately polarizing with the wholesale removal of Touch ID and the exceedingly high price point. It has me polarized against myself. :D

This year I was all over the place on my thoughts. I saw X as kind of the embodiment of everything I’m not liking about Apple these days along with a lot of things I do like. With the high cost, I questioned if both my husband and I should keep upgrading together or if I should go back to taking his hand me downs and putting the money saved to other things or causes.

But CP took an absolute stance and he’s still taking it even as he asks other people to fund this purchase. Why not say what the situation really is: that despite the wonky impression it makes on paper, in the hand it might just be a really good purchase for some people. Not all people, but some might like it. And that he is open to acknowledging that and exploring that.

I can’t judge him for changing his mind because goodness knows I’ve gone back and forth on this iPhone. I’m at the point now where I’m wanting to get it, have met charitable goals and bought other things we needed, and could theoretically get it after the holidays. But I remain uncertain. However I acknowledge the iPhone X has value, is a legitimate choice for many people, and the negatives I saw and continue to see in it aren’t any worse than the negatives in the competition. It’s a solid contender for the right buyer.

Oh Jeez, really? I will need to see that for myself. If it is as you say, there is no middle ground with this gentleman, is there? I had bought a Pixel 2 and my husband had the 2XL. They’re nice enough phones. The value for the money wasn’t there, though, because of a substantial noticeable defect in mine and shortcomings in husband’s phone due to design and hardware choices Google made. However, if Google can mitigate and stabilize the known issues with software fixes and provide good customer support as problems arise, it could yet be a good value. It’s early to call. At any rate, there is a calmer way to react to this situation and comment on it. It sounds like he opted not to take that route. Still, I am curious how a scratched phone is not the owner’s fault. Mine was pretty tough and durable.

Chris Pirillo can be insightful and articulate when he chooses to be and makes the effort. Lol, but maybe his paying subscribers want him to be a bit explosive. YouTube is a bit of a strange place.

Agreed, I'm not giving him my money, but if others feel they get a value that way, fine.

Pirillo is doing a live YouTube stream right now asking the community to donate so he can buy a 256GB iPhone X. :D

I knew he'd see the light.
I wouldn't go that far, he's still on android and one of recent podcasts is stating that android is superior for him and his efficiency. He's still fairly critical regarding iOS, but fairly effusive with regard to android.

See when he's being constructive, his analysis is actually very helpful. eg. comparison of youtube on iOS vs Android, review of the Pixel book, etc.

I fully support your upgrading to the iPhone X. :D

It seems like he's reviewing something that he's reading about on the internet. He obviously doesn't own one so how can he give a review on it? I for one love that apple is using all screen Real estate possible. The other OEMs are going to follow suit. They with with everything, from Touch ID, to Apple Pay, to emojis, to the notch, to whatever apple releases in the future. Every single design engineer uses apple products for inspiration. Even boxes for phones changed to meet the standard apple set. I remember buying a Samsung and HTC is a cheap ATT box that fell apart as I opened it.

I want to watch his stuff, but it blows my mind how many times he asks for patreon donations.

And lastly he went live to raise money to buy an iPhone X. I mean I worked my ass off for mine lol

are you really surprised? he basically panic ordered the pixel 2 and pixel 2 XL when they were announced and started collecting money for the phone AFTER he received it... like what? and then when he said he was gonna keep the XL, he started collecting money from people to pay for his wife's pixel 2 cause he wanted her to switch to android...????

I was once on a live chat and saw on two occasions he received $50.00 from two different people ! I was amazed. People just give him money so he can say their name on the super chat feed lol

Why is this guy collecting money to purchase his phones? Is his argument that we won't be able to hear his infinite wisdom if he can't buy the devices (which he cannot afford)?

What a _______........(my mom said to not say anything if you can't say something nice).

That’s the thing. He can afford them. He just chooses not to.

I know exactly how the notch was formed as I work in engineering and can see the decisions they faced.
The FaceID and 7MP FaceTime camera cannot be inlaid underneath the LED. It wouldn't function with current technology.

There are four design decisions in a "full screen" phone to keep the camera modules above the display:
  1. Do a 90% screen, ten percent top bezel with accompanying camera hardware. Phone has a bezel at the top only. This has a weird look to it as the rectangular display sitting underneath a bezel gives off a weird anti-symmetry. Also, valuable real estate is left to rot in a weird case of failed design.
  2. Do an 80/20 with lower bezel and top bezel same size. The lower bezel is for the aesthetic of symmetry and has no functional utility. This ends up messing with the new gestures as some smaller hands may not deal well with the extra space.
    1. OR Do an 80/20 with the top bezel being camera module and lower bezel being some sort of gesture area. Screen is sized to a perfect rectangle.
    2. The first method is useless as you are leaving something in the design that doesn't have a function.
    3. The second method takes away from the whole full screen experience by replacing the Home Button with a Gesture Area. Functionally the same after the iPhone 7 and will create a fragmented evolution towards eventual full screen. Have to abandon this one as you don't want people learning this phone's new gestures only for a year later abandoning it for something else.
    4. Grandma doesn't care about bezels so much as not having to learn the same basic **** over and over again every year. She'll just stick with her old phone.
  3. Create a full screen phone except with a notch in the middle top as a module bezel. While this disrupts the flow of the UI, it also allows for newer UI paradigms and is thus not a design dead end. The top bar was used for system functions anyways and unnecessary icons.
    1. Most people don't pay attention to all of the icons at the top of the screen, anyways. Microsot did a study on the Taskbar for Vista and found that most people only ever looked at the clock icon, which is why Windows 7, 8, and 10 made it four times the size and more functional.
    2. The phone maker logo is useless to the user. They know who their phone carrier is. Removable.
    3. The Bluetooth logo is also a temporary requirement as not everyone is going to need to know they are connected to Bluetooth in an increasingly wireless world. So it can be removed.
    4. If not connected to Wi-Fi, it doesn't show up anyways. And LTE is replaced with the Wi-Fi symbole when off LTE and on Wi-Fi. Removable.
    5. While some people, such as me, love to know theire battery percentage....it's actually not on by default. So, removable. Plus, the AMOLED display sucks less power and the battery life is not as important.
    6. TIME of day is important and thus can take the left wing of the notch. Carrier Logo can also appear here if required by contract.
    7. Cellular bars is small as is LTE and the battery logo. Give them the right wing of the notch.
    8. Work internally on eventual customization of this "System Tray and Notification Area" so that the user can swap in and out what they want. All system tray info can be seen by a simple swipe down from the right to get into Control Center, which has functionality beyond arbitrary info such as battery percent, Carrier, connection, etc.
  4. Admit that a full screen display is impossible with with camera modules and go back to the old ways of large chin and lip bezels that make the device twice as large as it needs to be.
These are my thoughts. Also, the Notch is not noticeable after a week unless you use Landscape mode in safari. Which I have never done. Landscape reading makes me feel claustrophobic. Sorry if that inconveniences you, however. It is really bad in Safari, guys and gals.
Also, some apps bleed into the notch wings and I can't reach settings as it is top left, hidden right behind the time.

When you say most, you have a count on that? Personally, a quick check shows you are incorrect.

I think Apple should make an update to hide the notch during video. That’s the only time I really notice it.
