Ok so I’ve watched the entire video and I can say this....

Chris Pirillo is a legend in his own mind. He clearly believes his every word to be far weightier than it actually is.

That said, he raises some valid points.

I don’t the think the notch will be as persistent or obtrusive as he makes it out to be.

But I do think Apple could have been more cognizant of the times and places it doesn’t work and mitigated its presence more proactively.

The basic question is, how often is it possible for Apple to make the notch invisible and seamless, vs. how many times they actually do.

I suspect the ratio will decrease, but as it stands, it’s clearly not as much as they could.

Great post - but as it turns out, the notch does impact functionality, greatly. People now need to get used to all-new gestures (for no good reason, or benefit I might add - I simply do not buy the whole FaceID > TouchID argument), some of which, as I noted in my earlier post are simply atrocious (e.g scrolling from either side of the notch). Not to mention throwing out every single UI interaction involving the home button and TouchID sensor (which have collectively been around for a decade), which directly impacts a user base of hundreds of millions. But you are right, people will eventually get used to it - but the real question is was it really necessary in the first place?

Your post can be distilled down to “I fear change”.

Pirillo has done this drama before. He was a Microsoft MVP and then one day started ranting against Vista, he made several long videos, finally declared he was switching to Mac, and then started buying loads of Apple gear courtesy of his sponsors.

He used to have a 24x7x365 live stream with rolling sponsors. If he was buying something expensive, he'd try to find a sponsor for that purchase to cover the cost.

He then got tired of tech, shutdown the live stream, and started making videos about his personal life and interests. His audience plummeted. Now he's back declaring Apple have lost their way and he's going Google.

I guess because he lost a lot of his old audience, and there's a hell of a lot more competition now, he needs donations to get back on track.

I don't think he's a bad guy. But let's just say the story he is currently trying to tell would be a lot less interesting to people if he was sticking with Apple and buying one new iPhone this year. What he is doing now gives him a purpose, a reason to buy all these different handsets, and to compare the experiences to iOS.

I agree with him that iOS absolutely isn't perfect and has some issues that need fixing, but there's no way Android is better. Android has tons of problems and suffers huge glitches and inconsistencies all over the place. Pirillo has found some of the problems already, but glosses over the faults by declaring hopefully this will get fixed.

Android to me feels like it has been designed by software engineers. It is a mess. I see no evidence of thoughtful design in Android at all.

I disagree, change is good as long as it's warranted, which in this case, it isn't. And please, this is in no way analogous to the change from the 30-pin connector to Lightning, which had several benefits such as a reversible connector, faster data throughput and better reliability. Please point out to me three tangible benefits of FaceID over TouchID, or even how the new gestures are simpler or more elegant than the ones they replace. Change is great - change for the sake of change, especially when it induces an unnecessary learning curve isn't. Remember Windows 8? Could you argue that it changed things for the better?

As a former webos user, I welcome the added gestures and extra screen space. Jury still out as far as faceid being as good or better than touchid, but I will soon find out.

Now this guy wants his viewers to pay for his wife's phone too! lol btw it was his own choice to buy the Pixel 2 XL phone because he was tired of the Apple ecosystem and wanted something different, But now he is pretending as he only bought the Pixel because his audience wanted him to and wants them to pay for it. Not only that but he wants them to pay for his Pixelbook too! He had pre ordered the Pixel phones and paid for them and was very excited about joining the world of Android but later thought why not let the idiots pay for his phones and hence set up the gofundme site. You should read the his terms and conditions on that site. He gets to keep all the devices indefinitely and will not do a give away even after reviewing as according to him "people get mad if the don't win".

1. Potentially more secure.
2. Reduction/elimination of bezels and an increase in screen space relative to form factor.
3. It’s simply a step forward.

My responses:

1. Highly debatable
2. Agreed - although this could have also been accomplished via an in-screen acoustic fingerprint sensor (which Apple failed to commercialize, even with the considerable engineering resources at its disposal), or with a simple rear-side fingerprint sensor (which works equally well)
3. I disagree.

Yeap the notch cant be defended. People will get used to it, and it will still be a good phone for the other features, but it simply is a design flaw. It will be the first thing to go if a jailbreak arrives.

Good point - in fact, this will be the first time I will ever consider jailbreaking my iPhone since 2007, just to hide that monstrosity of a notch.

The counter-argument against an in-screen sensor has been the need the look at the screen as you swipe up to access the 'sensor' (in absence of a button that can be 'felt'). You might as well have Face ID - rear sensors would be a compromise

He always said he'd return one of the Pixel 2 or Pixel 2 XL unless his audience funded them. The original plan was to buy both and see which he preferred and return the other one. But he's now convinced his wife to switch to Android so he's trying to see if his audience will help make it happen.

I don't think anyone is being tricked into thinking they are buying lottery tickets for the chance to win one of these devices (which would be illegal anyway). It's very clear he's asking people to fund them so he can keep them.

I don't really see the problem with what he's doing in terms of asking for donations. He puts on a live one hour show every night, records a live podcast, hosts a chat, etc. If people enjoy what he does, it's not unreasonable for them to send him a few bucks to support his venture. And it's all entirely voluntary so.

Getting rid of the home button is a plus. It was the single biggest point of failure on the devices and took up precious space. You barely need to touch it on the iPad now as you can quickly navigate around with simple gestures and from the videos today it appears to be simple to navigate around on the X.

I guess it’s true that you should distance yourself from the negative and cynical folk in your life. It’s a far happier place without the dark cloud they always carry with them.

Whether we like it or not, those notches will be implemented for future devices...as per what Tim Cook stated.

Because he makes money from views/ad revenue for doing the review. His subscribers (it's sad that he has any) have a right to request which items he reviews…they are basically telling him which items will get him the most views and thus make him the most money. If you want to be a lawyer, you have to pay for law school, and if you want to deliver pizzas you have to buy a car…if he wants to review things and make money from advertising, he has to buy some stuff to review.
I understand why people are mad I just don’t agree. Nobody should have to buy something they don’t want. This way he’s not buying it. Someone else is.

At the end of the day his viewers aren’t willing to pay. Much like people scalping an iPhone X next week, it’s all down to what people are willing to pay.

Without balance you have chaos. Be careful dismissing those who do not think like you

I really don't give a rat's ass what he says, that's his right, all I can say is my stock is up 12 points this week, 63 points per share this year! Can't wait till I can justify one (my 6S was replaced by Apple a couple months ago, so I am in no rush)

What did he state? I always figured Apple stated to "embrace the notch" as a way for developers to future proffer their apps because Apple eventually plans to have that bar under the screen.

He said it was the future of iphones.

I’d be fine with it if all had were the clock and battery/signal icons. Just don’t try to shove my movies or web pages in there.
Would a jailbreak be able to shut that off as far as videos/web scrolling? Hmm maybe its not possible

This Chris guy talks a lot, but says nothing of substance. He constantly refers to "shortcomings" and "downfalls", but never explains what they actually are. He used his most recent video to say "I won't get an iPhone X unless you all donate to me, and then I will". Smells of fishing for money. If he cared about his viewers and believed in his conviction about it being a bad device, why would he waste their money on it?
