Here are my observations. I figured I would share - I'm guessing there are quite a few 4k 32" people wondering if this is an upgrade or downgrade....

  1. My desk is now much cleaner, got rid of speakers and the smaller monitor foot print frees up a lot of space.
  2. monitor looks WAY WAY Brighter than my dell U3219Q, changing the experience quite a bit.
    1. as bright as my iPad Pro 12.9" (at default indoor brightness levels), which was a huge relief
  3. monitor is much sharper, obviously.
  4. The experience feels like you just got a new Mac, even though it's plugged into my m1 Mac mini.
  5. Sounds is great.
  6. Video is worse than my Logitech 1080p camera, sadly.
  7. I feel more drawn to use this than my Dell.

I picked it up for fun, assuming I might return it (I have 45 days with Best Buy). Right now I am wondering if I will ever be able to go back to the Dell U3219Q with low PPI 4k 32"....lol. Now I need to see if I can get it to play games with my windows desktop with a RTX 2080.
It’s a great monitor, but it being more expensive than a standalone iMac is really off-putting for me. I maybe would have considered it if it was around the 1K$ mark but it’s too expensive to justify for me

Just helping him out is all. He did make a thread trying to personally justify his purchase when he should just be admiring it himself. He could have gotten a better monitor for his money.
A better monitor is subjective. For you it’s clearly about the specs of the panel and the price and more power to you for that. For him, myself and many others it’s more about the aesthetics and integration which is unrivalled.

Marques did say it was a bad deal which I think almost everyone will agree with. He didn’t say it was a bad monitor, in fact he said the opposite.

Let's say 1500 CAD, I would consider it. I've seen it at Best Buy and it IS a great screen. Camera deceived me a bit, but Apple will fix it in a software update. I was surprised by how thick it was, compared to my 24 inch iMac.

The 27-inch iMac had so much value, when you think about it. It cost basically 100 more, but it had a whole computer inside and it was also rather decent.

Basically 3 things :
1. Make the cable removable (for God's sake...)
2. Make it around 20% cheaper
3. Fix the webcam through a software update

...aaaaaand we've got a real winner here.
what if they fixed one of the three (I am talking about the webcam)? How would you feel then? Because I don't see them fixing the cable or the price.

The question was not for me to answer but as you say the webcam will be fixed and sooner or later it will be discounted on Amazon or elsewhere. So I think there will be a time when the ASD will be a good value.

The cable is just a stupid thing to do on their end, but I can get over it.

Webcam's gonna get fixed soon according to Apple.

The price is still the main problem here, because its value compares in no way with the 27-in iMac. It basically feels like a ripoff now, because you pay close to the same price, but you also have to buy a computer.

If it's on sale or on the refurb store, I say it's a thing to consider.

I know it's way less expensive than the Pro Display XDR, but IMO this display was WAY too expensive.

The problem is 6-12 months from now there won't be much left to appreciate other than the shiny wrapper. Mini-led monitors are about the flood the market and with samsung back in the game with qd-oled TV's and monitors it's almost a guarantee they will have a 4k qd-led out by the end of the year, both of which will absolutely curb stomp the ASD in image quality.
QD-oled has some serious issues, so it won’t be acceptable at least in professional monitors (At least the first generation).

Facts checked : He said it's an awesome monitor (superior resolution, best design amongst monitors, awesome build quality, exceptional sound), but too expensive.
For the paneltech used and the missing height adjustment… and the actual state of the camera … that’s right

IPS panels are great and have advantages over MiniLED. This is not a clear situation. This YouTuber also mentioned that the Studio Display uses the same panel as the LG monitor. This is not correct and just shows how badly informed he is. The panel was developed exclusively for this display and is newer than the one used in the LG monitor.

HAHA. This monitor would feel priced correctly at $1299
maybe you can find a comparable priced at that 1299? Send Link.

Personally, if you compare to the LG 5K, you get a brighter screen, high end speakers, better build, better camera (OK, if you read reports a last minute update to the software caused a soon to be fixed problem in quality). so you get much more than your "feel priced right" point, are all of the display makers gouging us?

But the LG Ultrafine is $1299 and has no speakers, no True Tone, etc.

Oh yeah and was also built like a POS.
LG Ultrafine is also 5 years old. We were walking around with iPhone 7s back then. The reason Apple (and LG) can ask this crazy price is just because there is no competition in the 5k field. Really hope QD OLED and cheaper mini-LED panels will shake up the market a bit.

Haha you are helping no one. I provided this thread to help others on the fence. I have 45 days to return, no regrets so far, i think these insights are valuable to the community. I get the sense you are justifying how you can’t afford it with posts like this, but maybe I’m wrong? ;-)
Don't let the haters get you down, I for one appreciate you posting your thoughts.

What can be seen in this thread is a typical pattern for a lot (all?) Apple products:
  1. Apple releases somehting in a product category with lots of other comparable devices.
  2. To differentiate said product, Apple adds additional features or improves certain properties that some or all others don't have.
  3. The product then gets slammed by people who don't value those additions, because they think that nobody values (or, worse, should value) those this additions.
The Studio Display adds a lot compared to a run of the mill display: higher build quality, good mics, good speakers, True Tone, brightness sensor, Center Stage, Hey Siri support, 10GB/s USB-C hub, 96W charging etc. You don't think these things are worth anything, or that losing features other monitors have isn't a worthwhile trade-off? Absolutely fine. But don't go telling other people they shouldn't value them, because that is just arrogant and condescending.

There are people that will be using this monitor daily for 8 hours a day for multiple years. If you value above things, the ~$1000 premium doesn't matter.

If you watched his review he compared it to a Roll-Royce and other luxury goods. Value is all about perspective and, make no mistake, if you use this monitor you will realize it's market positioning. It's not for everyone, but remember that value is subjective.
It’s for a very specific customer, not the average Mac user. And the customer who buys this? I’d bet they’d pay $1,799.00. The demand for an “affordable” Apple display from this small but vocal subset has been pent up for years.

This is wrong. I have 2 of the LG 5K’s. They have passable speakers, a solid webcam (that nobody talks about) AND TrueTone if you have a Mac from after 2018. The True Tone comes from the Mac, not the display, so you don’t get True Tone if you use it in clam shell mode (or use a headless Mac), but you do get it if you use the MacBook open. Hell, even the Apple Thunderbolt Display has True Tone if you have the right Mac.

Same experience. I moved from a Dell P322QE (pic included) with onboard ethernet, a Logitech webcam on top and Dell speaker bar mounted to the bottom of it. My desire has always been to have the cleanest/sleekest WFH/conference call setup as possible. The Dell was fine, no major complaints but it just never resonated with me. I'm incredibly happy with the new Studio Display... yes the webcam could get better (and sounds like it will be) but overall the aesthetics and Mac operability are completely on point for me.

Sure.

You got all of that + a free computer inside. Brand new.

Oh. Don't thank me ?
