For the paneltech used and the missing height adjustment… and the actual state of the camera … that’s right
I already mentioned the webcam and it's going to get fixed soon enough. Not worried one bit here.

Height adjustement comes down to price. Because you can have height adjustment on these, but for a salty extra.

Panel tech, I kinda disagreed with him. Because no matter how old it is, I have yet to see such a high quality panel on another monitor. I went to Best Buy last week and nothing compares.

I'm trying out a 28" 4K Samsung at the moment. I've been on an LG 5K but I wanted to try out a 144Hz screen to get a taste. I don't much like the matte screen either. I don't understand why almost all monitors are matte, including the screens on high performance Windows laptops.
Are you using the Mac for gaming and need the higher refresh rate ?

I was running a matte Samsung 4K alongside a 2011 Thunderbolt display on my M1 Mini, but when the gorgeous Studio Display came out and waited 11 years for a display monitor, I had to have it.

Now I had a reason to dump the Samsung and have dual Apple displays with glass fronts that actually still matches & looks good between decade old displays!

Bought my LG Ultrafine in Jan 2020 to replace my spoilt ATD and it’s been great except for the plastic at the back which flexes whenever I adjust the display height. Reason I still bought it with so many bad reviews is the value of having speakers, webcam and charging all built in. And I bought a Cole Brook Saunders Ollin ARM due to the stock stand being garbage.

It really came in handy during the lockdown period, not having to stoop down or move my head sideways during Teams/Zoom calls, having a speaker and mic that works fairly well and of course a larger canvas.

Am waiting for users feedback once Apple patches the potato cam quality before I bite the bullet to for the VESA ASD. Will pass the LG over to my wife once I get the ASD.

This is wrong. I have 2 of the LG 5K’s. They have passable speakers, a solid webcam (that nobody talks about) AND TrueTone if you have a Mac from after 2018. The True Tone comes from the Mac, not the display, so you don’t get True Tone if you use it in clam shell mode (or use a headless Mac), but you do get it if you use the MacBook open. Hell, even the Apple Thunderbolt Display has True Tone if you have the right Mac.
every display gets True Tone adjusted if the Mac is open.

that's not even comparable to the display "having True Tone", which is valuable for Mac mini users, clamshell users, etc.

Same experience. I moved from a Dell P322QE (pic included) with onboard ethernet, a Logitech webcam on top and Dell speaker bar mounted to the bottom of it. My desire has always been to have the cleanest/sleekest WFH/conference call setup as possible. The Dell was fine, no major complaints but it just never resonated with me. I'm incredibly happy with the new Studio Display... yes the webcam could get better (and sounds like it will be) but overall the aesthetics and Mac operability are completely on point for me.

dang nice setup ?

I prefer a mousepad under my mx master though

It’s for a very specific customer, not the average Mac user. And the customer who buys this? I’d bet they’d pay $1,799.00. The demand for an “affordable” Apple display from this small but vocal subset has been pent up for years.

You're right. Before it was announced, I was thinking that an Apple display 32", 4K for under $2,000 would be an instant buy. Apple didn't quite deliver what I wanted, but $1599 for 27" was within my reach so I bought it.

It's not nearly expensive enough to be a "luxury item". ;) Joking aside, that's not the point of this display as you know.
Shhhh.... don't tell Tim Cook I would have paid more for this thing!

Apple knows this. The Ecosystem works brilliantly when you're all in. And boy do we (happily) pay a premium for it.

Exactly. Every once in a while Apple does make a product, like the late 2020 M1 MacBook Air that is both luxury tech and an insanely good value (being faster than PCs twice as expensive), but that’s the exception vs the norm.

Apple sells the Apple Watch Hermes for $1219-$1499. Are these “good deals”? Is a Lexus ES350 a “good deal” compared to a Toyota Camry?

The Pro Display XDR is a "luxury" monitor, the Studio monitor is nearly identical to the 27" iMac monitor, which was considered a fairly entry level computer. How do you take the panel out of a consumer oriented computer and call it luxury?! I'm willing to pay a premium for a monitor from Apple just for the Apple look and because they're the only ones who make glossy displays, but the Studio is too high a premium for pretty much the same monitor I'm already using in my iMac, which I considered a great value at the time I got it.

The cable is just a stupid thing to do on their end, but I can get over it.

Webcam's gonna get fixed soon according to Apple.

The price is still the main problem here, because its value compares in no way with the 27-in iMac. It basically feels like a ripoff now, because you pay close to the same price, but you also have to buy a computer.

If it's on sale or on the refurb store, I say it's a thing to consider.

I know it's way less expensive than the Pro Display XDR, but IMO this display was WAY too expensive.
Apple displays have never been a good value compared to the iMac. You are arguing apples and oranges.

If you want an iMac, get an iMac. There are still plenty of refurbished 27" iMacs available from Apple.

This display is for people who don't want or need an iMac.

It's not 'way too expensive'. I would say $300 more than it should be at best given the current market.

It's not 'pretty much the same monitor'. We really need to move beyond this. The contrast and brightness alone are next level.

iMacs are a better deal than Apple displays. This was always the case. If you want an iMac, get an iMac. Apples and oranges mate.

I said the Pro XDR was "way too expensive".
The Studio Display is slightly too expensive. I agree with you about being ~$300 too much.

Make it $300 less (like in a promo or something), and I would definitely consider this + a base model Mac Studio, knowing the large iMac might be dead, and I'm sure even PC people would want to consider the display as well.

But the LG Ultrafine is $1299 and has no speakers, no True Tone, etc.

Those are seen as advantages to some people.

True Tone is mostly a gimmick if you're trying to do anything color accurate (I know you can disable it) and most desktop power users (in the class spending this money for a monitor) have legitimate desktop speakers. Built in ones are redundant and useless for those users (especially if doing multi-monitor setups)

Not me checking deals on the Pro Display XDR. I wouldn't go back from 32" AOC to 27" ASD. Let's save up a few bucks. ;)

Do I need one? Probably not. Do I want one? Heck yes. And that is probably the same reason as the OP went for the ASD. If you want something, buy it. And really don't care about what others have to say.

If you watched his review he compared it to a Roll-Royce and other luxury goods.

Eh, not exactly. He compared it to an ultra luxury car that has a very particular set of features that are only available in very few models. This happens to be the cheapest of those models, but it’s still a $400,000 car. His conclusion is that it ultimately provides a feature set not quite offered by anything else, but is ultimately not a good value.

In my opinion, it’s value is just from convenience. It’s, “here’s a monitor from the same company that made your computer - just plug it in and it will look great and work immediately.” You don’t have to shop around, compare features, or source different components such as speakers and cams. That’s the appeal of the iMac as well - chose a computer based on the level of performance that you are looking for, everything else come write it, including a really good monitor.

Now they are just selling a $1,600 iMac but they took out the computer (there’s also a $600 iPhone inside but it’s disabled) Personally, I wouldn’t even consider spending over $1,000 on a non high-refresh rate display.

I wouldn’t consider the 27” iMac an “entry level” computer.

I just replaced my wife's 2008 Mac Mini with my 16/512 Mac Mini M1 and Dell 2715Q -- I'm rockin' the Mac Studio Max with the ASUS ProArt Display 32” 4K HDR that I just recevied yesterday, and it's amazing! This thing is a beast! Solid heavy duty build, and covers all of my needs I for about a 50% savings vs. ASD and 100% adjustable! It even ships with a C-Clamp (that will support a 747 lol!) for desktop edge mount.

And that’s the beauty of Apple’s new approach to “Pro” desktops. You can select the computer and display that work best for you, rather than be ”stuck” with the iMac/iMac Pro whether you wanted an LG 5K display or not.

exactly - I have ZERO ZERO ZERO need with already having a 4k 32" dell...lol. decided to embrace my want and check it out

Which is what I said. The the person who said they don't have speakers is wrong.
