There's plenty of room to fit a 4" screen within the current form factor without changing the aspect ratio. But I'm no engineer, so if they do need to change the form factor, make it a bit wider, not taller.

I may be in the minority but I really don't care about a bigger screen, PERSONALLY. I'm more of a software guy so I'm really concerned with the aspects of iOS 6 and how great that will/should be. Don't get me wrong, a bigger screen would not hurt but it's not at the top of my list.

indeed! as long as they get iOS 6 right, I'm buying the next iPhone

No, no, no, no NO!

I really wish people would stop legitimizing this ridiculous rumor. This just doesn't work.

Firstly, stretched looks ugly (sure, subjective). Sure some apps could stretch well (twitter, facebook, rss readers, etc), but all "full screen" apps (games, GPS, etc) would need to be COMPLETELY redesigned or have huge ugly bars at the top and bottom. No thank you. Plus, most apps (aside from videos) would look ridiculous in landscape.

and.... the number one reason why this would be a terrible design choice... it would be extremely difficult to access notification center with one hand for 82.3%* of all iPhone users. Don't believe me? Try some one handed typing, then casually try to pull down notification center from somewhere between the speaker and the top of the iPhone. Talk about a finger stretching exercise.

*yeah that number is made up. Bite me

God could we quit with these stupid mockups that make their way on to every tech site. I know MR is a rumor site and you think you need to put up new rumors every day to keep people coming to the site, but I'm sorry, someone's mockup of what the new iPhone could look like is not news, heck it's not even rumor worthy.

And does anyone seriously believe Apple would go from 4:3 to 16:9? Seriously ?!?

If that's the iPhone 5, then this is going to be my next phone:
Nokia-1600-02.jpg

A) The display is weird and
B) The metal back looks like 5#17 and completely out of place. An all-aluminum back would look much better.

I like this design, it retains the overall look and feel though I think Apple might update the look more drastically as it moves into the next 2 year cycle. If it gets much taller than that it might have trouble fitting into a pocket easily.

I actually think that a longer screen makes more sense for the iPhone since it is held in portrait mode more often than landscape. If you're looking at your twitter or Facebook timeline, a 16:9 4-inch screen would display more content than a 3:2 4-inch screen would. As far as other types of apps are concerned, the new phone can display old 3:2 apps in the center of the screen at native resolution, with a small black bar at the top and bottom. Eventually developers would be able to update these apps to support the new phone. I don't think it would be much of a burden!

They damn better not change the aspect ratio. There is no need for a different aspect ratio and it just creates developer headaches. Please keep the same aspect ratio and stop iOS fragmentation!

I don't believe that Apple has not settled on a form factor by now. I think they've had that locked in for a while. These things will be on sale in 4-5 months, max.

For portrait mode, I could see this as additional dedicated space for something like Siri ... for landscape mode, not so much. :)

What an ugly back! Ive would never approve.
there's a reason he's SVP of industrial design and these mockup fanatics aren't. They take a bunch of loosely sourced rumors and do mockups that mot of the time are butt ugly. And because everyone is so obsessed with what the new iPhone will look like these photos spread like wildfire.

indeed! as long as they get iOS 6 right, I'm buying the next iPhone

I agree as long as they get iOS 6 right, I.....

who am I kidding, I'm buying the next iPhone as long as iOS 6 isn't a complete miserable failure....

Considering how I have acquired 4 years of apps... own a MB, ATV, and iPad, and will be buying a new MBP/MBA in the next month or two... I honestly can't imagine any scenario where I wouldn't buy the next iPhone at this point...

I am more bothered by the fact the antenna gaps don't line up with aluminum on the top than I am with the screen. But i do agree if Apple is going to make a larger screen, the is more than enough space with the current iPhone dimensions.

Ok.... now someone make a mockup of a 4" iPhone with the normal 3:2 aspect ratio.
This was my take a while back... http://zweigand.blogspot.com/2012/05/this-bigger-better-iphone-screen.html

Although I really don't think there would be any reason to go exactly 4". They could move up to ~3.85" and keep the screen res at a nice even 300 ppi and have more room alongside the screen to work with.

EDIT: Before I get comments on the design ...the image is supposed to show that a 4" 3:2 screen would be possible at the current iPhone's width IF they could stretch the screen extremely close to the edge. It IS NOT supposed to be a rendering of what I think the next iPhone will look like. I'm not going to try and out-design Jony Ive.

I hope they come out with Three variations.

3.5

4-4.2

and a monster 5" (i know many don't want it but it will be the 17" MBP of the iPhone ... it has it's place! for those that want more a mobile computer as appose to phone)

Just add phone capabilities to the iPad if you really want larger displays.
