Won't happen. The ratio will be the same. These mockups are nice and all, but there is no way they are going to make exiting apps ugly/shoehorned.
Apple WILL NOT change the aspect ratio. When will people accept that simple truth?!?
Don't be so sure.

It might actually be not so much work for developers.

I'm not saying it will happen, just that it's not as unlikely as you think.

I'm not a fan... A tad bit larger screen in the same form factor is what I prefer.

See pic. It's a rough look, but I pasted that 4" screen into the 4s form factor, and moved that slot. It's not pretty, but it could work AND fit into my pocket still....
Yeah, that's a good direction to go in imo. See here for a thread on that topic, with some nice pics on page 3.

What's interesting is that Apple's competition is using 4.7"+ screens now.
If Apple releases the iPhone with a 4" screen, it'll still be small compared to other phones.

Also, the resolution might stay the same if they switch to 4" This means buttons will be slightly bigger, menus might be oversized, ect.

Pick up a 720p phone like the HTC One X and you'll see why the high resolution is nice.

I think it's a very attractive render.

And to all the naysayers on this thread: who are you kidding? Only an act of God will stop 90% of you getting the next one, no matter its shape, specs, or your bank balance. And the other 10% will no doubt be mocking it maliciously right until the moment you wave it smugly at everyone else. That's the way of the naysaying Apple Fan.

I think I'll just wait and see what Apple has up their sleeve (or their tree hahaha :D). I mean, they're on top financially, they know how to run a business and they know what they're doing with their products, I have faith they'll do the correct thing that's best for them and the consumers. Sick of the rumors....

Now show me what the keyboard will look like in landscape.
Good point. A naïve approach (enlarging the keyboard to fit the extended screen width) would be awful.

However, Apple can apply some cleverness and find a solution.

Here's a mockup of a solution I personally came up with.

Another solution is to keep the keyboard the same size as it is on the current screen, and put it in the bottom center (with space around the sides, which is due to extra screen width). This would be better for 1 handed typing (although it seems unlikely you'd want to type with 1 hand when holding the phone in landscape mode).

The device does NOT have to have a larger footprint to have the wider screen.

A little ingenuity in the proximity sensor is all.

Oh yeah, I forgot there was only one way to hold a phone

There's only one way to hold your phone confourtably, and it is with one hand. The good thing about 3.5screens is this, if you no longer can do everything with one hand and need both, it' s better going with the 4.85 of the galaxy s3

You mean 90% of non-game developers. And about 60% of the apps on the App Store are games.

So... 36% are going to be just fine! Damnit!! :)

I like that!

Am I the only person bothered by the continued use of the term 'iPhone 5'? We've been over this.... it's technically the 6th iPhone, it won't feature 5G network anything, and it will likely intro iOS 6 (or be running the same iOS 5 that the 4s did, which is really the 5th iPhone. . . . )..

</rant>

I just happened to watch CNBC today talking about Apple and the stock being down . . and it really bothered me that mass media is referring to the next iPhone as iPhone 5...

Ok- no matter what apple does with the aspect ratio, I can't wait to annoy the crap out of my android loving friends by proudly proclaiming, "Finally- see- a phone with a 4" screen!" when I show it to them.

By that reasoning, won't it be the 7th?

1. iphone 2. 2 3. 3 4. 3g 5. 4 6 4s

I don't think Apple will increase the screen. But if they do I cannot see them going bigger then 4" and the design will be as the images in this thread, the form factor will offer the same length and width as the iPhone 4! I just hope it has the EXACT same PPI as the current Retina screen, same backlighting etc, cause I love my iPhone 4 screen :D

By that logic, Apple should just release a 5" iPhone and call it a day. Any move to change screen size will be primarily about usability rather than what the competition is doing. Besides, it's not like all/most competing smartphones have 4.7" screens or even that most consumers buy 4.7" screens. The competition spans a range of screen sizes from some even smaller than the iPhone to some much larger. With only one model iPhone, Apple isn't going to aim for some extreme but rather some sweet spot in the middle that hopefully most consumers will agree with. 4" is probably about right.
