No.. it did not. MP3 Technology did that. And it had NOTHING to do with Apple.

----

In 1987, with a project named EUREKA project EU147, Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB), the prestigious Fraunhofer Institut Integrierte Schaltungen research center (a division of the German Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft firm) began researching high-quality, low bit-rate audio coding. Fraunhofer-Gesellshaft now owns the licensing and the patent rights to the audio compression technology that was developed, a technology better known as MP3.

I do believe Apple needs a big shake up in terms of how it is managed with product lines split across autonomous areas of the business rather that it all being controlled centrally as now.

Totally agree.

I think there are other signs of this necessity too. For example, the launch of AirTags really showed how no women felt able to speak up during its development. When it was released, every woman immediately said: "That's a stalker's dream."

The core leadership team is male and middle-aged. Free U2 album, anybody?

I know Apple's trying hard to fix this. They are promoting a more diverse leadership. But change needs to happen more rapidly and at more senior levels. It's way past the time to move some of the existing team to emeritus status, and bring in fresh blood. I would even say this is an existential requirement for Apple right now. I'll bet that if Ive were honest, he left for this reason – there's no new challenges, and nothing innovative happening.

I'm not here to argue, but to gently suggest that the more things in life you are grateful for directly correlates with your happiness.

I'm not better than you or even always happy/grateful, so just offering you my confession here.
I’m here to openly and not gently suggest that “Let’s all sit in a circle and say thank you for our computers and discuss how great they are” isn’t gratefulness or in the spirit of some local holiday, it’s straight up cult behaviour.

This is a website about computers and phones, I didn’t expect to see lovebombing on the front page.

My current ipad Pro 11" M1 with Magic Keyboard... used with ipad os 16 beta and stage manager with 4K external monitor full support.

It used to be my iPad. Oh, how I loved the iPad. It grew from a giant iPhone to a tablet with an amazing keyboard with a great pencil for handwriting and bringing my creativity to life.

However, I feel Apple has halted with it at such a great turning point…the M1…it can do so much! However, they stopped I feel with it and I continued to grow. The iPad was no longer but they taught me that a stunning powerhouse with an amazing stylus is great and I grew…into the Surface lineup. Apple, you made me really love the Surfaces!

And I can thank the iPad for teaching me that a tablet capable device is essential in my workflow.

The Mac Pro 2009

- Insane longevity of 13 years due to upgradeable firmware (to 5,1) and expandability and upgradeability with standard components
- Easy compatibility with Windows via dual-boot (gaming!)

Going forward, I'll have to buy two computers.

My M1 MacBook Pro MAX. I haven’t been this amazed by a computer since I made my first gaming PC in 2007.

Everyone of them, their outrageous prices and Apple's walled garden are allowing me to save tons of money by not buying them

Currently? - I am most thankful for my iPad 9th Gen, the last iPad with a headphone jack (unless/until they one day bring it back, High Impedance sockets on the iPad Pros please Apple?), an almost perfect product for when my Air 2 needed immediately replacing, and because I bought with a discount thankfully right before the recent UK price bump, a really great value device for my uses, even if I buy a higher specced iPad in a year or… three(?!). And the thing I’m writing this post on.

Of all time? - Probably my (initially) 400mHz AGP PowerMac G4 - the first Mac I owned, a fantastically easy machine to upgrade in almost every way (and I did). With the upgrades that were possible I took it all the way from ‘classic’ macOS 9 all the way up to the last PPC version, Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard (which remains the peak of MacOS design IMHO, given context for the time etc). So much nostalgia and personal history attached to this machine - used it through university, used it for work, used it for fun. Everything the ideal experience of using a computer should be, and I am thankful that my age and this machine’s release intersected in such a perfect way for my tastes in computing.

But I must also give a special runner-up mention (that applies to both categories) for my 2010 Mac Pro (5,1) which I still use for, amongst other things, my central local iTunes library seeing as Apple has apparently given up on that being a serious thing to them now. At just about 12 years since purchase my Mac Pro has been an absolute tank, despite some unfortunate injuries from me at times(!). Almost as easily upgradeable as my aforementioned G4PM. IMHO (and in my personal experience) the best single computer Apple has ever made.

Again this worshipping attitude feels quite strange. Apple builds great products and has good service but being "thankful" for products goes a little far.
My dishwasher works perfectly fine as well, am I expected to be thankful to Miele in any way? I might buy another Miele if I like it.

My friend, I'm grateful for you and your comments here - does that make me part of the Lostanddamned cult? :)

1) Apple Silicon (2022 Studio and 2021 MacBook Pro 16)
2) Beats Fit Pro (2021 for running and gym)
3) 27 inch iMac (2014 purchased used - I love the 27 inch iMacs)
4) iPhone 13 mini (2021 the small size is great for running with or use in the gym)

The M1 MacBook Air. Paid $849, and it blows away my (retired) 2015 MacBook Pro...
Interesting. I was actually thinking about getting a used 2015 MacBook Pro but finally decided against it. How much RAM does your 2015 Mac Book Pro have and how much RAM does your M1 MacBook Air have?

Currently: new Apple TV 4K. Absolutely love it!
Over time: Original MacBook. My switch from Dell couldn’t have been more perfect.

The iPhone. It's something that really changed everyone's lives. We've had useable computers and music players before Apple but not a smartphone that really took off. If 15 years ago you tell people that you will be doing everything (shopping, paying, translating, navigating, taking photos, videos, entertainment, instant messaging, video calling, etc) with one single device in your pocket that every single person will have (and not just a luxury like a PDA or Blackberry that only certain people had), no one would have believed it.

My first impulse was "my Apple Watch", since I rely so heavily on it and it's so seamlessly integrated with my daily routines. But then I wondered, what's the Apple product I really couldn't live without anymore? And to be honest, I don't really "need" an Apple Watch or an iPhone for that matter. I've never had an Android phone, but I'm sure I could get used to it somehow, if I had to. But what I couldn't get used to, I think, is using something else than a Mac. I absolutely hate (hate hate hate!) using Windows; and all the other alternatives, like Linux, just don't seem very attractive to me either. So, I guess, my favorite Apple device, the one I'm the most thankful for, is my Mac. 💻
