Any recommendations for some IEM/bud for sub-$100 that are not noise-isolating/cancelling? I need the ability to still here the external environment while listening to my music/podcasts. Another feature I need would be mic/volume controls. What's the best out there that meets these requirements?

dsquared, I'd see if I could find a cheap set of Bang & Olufsen A8 or Earset 3i, that's your best bet for comfort, style, sound quality, and it exactly meets your specs. Problem is it's a little over on price.

Other than that not sure...maybe some cheap Jabra OEM buds. Amazon has them for like $4 right now.

As for the topic, I'm now using Westone UM3X with removable cables (Westone official inline mic cables coming next month) as my main and Shure SE215i as a backup pair. Amazing sound from the Westones, pretty damn good from the Shure. Also for comfort, the Shures can't be beat (even by Bose).

Seems I'll be selling my C5s and P5s soon!

will the cable on the Beats Pro fit the iPhone with the bumper case in? What about the Studio Beats?

Try Yuin or Head-Direct earphones, like RE0.

Amazon.com has them for $200
well well well worth that price! regular MSRP is $400

you will not regret the choice, i have bought probably 10+ headphones in my life and these are the best hands down. Usually when headphones stop working its because the cable gets frayed, with these you can buy replacement cables for $20 = probably the last headphones I will ever have to buy.

Good review of them here http://www.audio-ideas.com/reviews/headphones/ultimate-ears-triplefi10.html
They are triple driver = full volume with crisp highs and lows ( cant do that with single drivers)

Great support (provided by logitech)
2 year warranty
Tons of extras and multiple size eartips

I actually purchased these headphones on Friday for $95 - it was a Black Friday deal on Amazon...I should be getting them on Tuesday, and I'm excited to try them out...I've heard really good things about them.

This is the 2nd time on the first page you are looking for cans that will last a "lifetime" - Why?
Do you think "can" technology will stay the same, or do you think in 2-3 yrs there will be better stuff available at a better price, (like all of the other electronincs you own).

I have seen some excellent recommendations from many posters, and while you prolly can't repel down a cliff from them, they don't have any common premature failures reported, so please don't fret about how thick/tuff the cables are, (cause you have no need for them to last a lifetime).

Personally I have Klipsch, (and I also own Snap-On tools), because quality is very important to me.

Sometimes I can't affort the higher end stuff, (so I simply save another month or two until I can) - ;)

Yes I do, unlike most electronics, audio have much more longevity. By my standard it should last 3 4 years for normal usage before the cable strained, or cans start to crackling/hissing overtime. Great sound will always remain great, even 90's B&W floorstander still sounds awesome compared to most modern loudspeaker.

So yes, unless you buy cheap audio, longevity is also a good reason to purchase an audio equipment.

BTW I still have until Christmas to decide, so feel free to throw in the bones, folks, thank you :)

There's an app in the app store called Awareness that allows loud noises like sirens, horns and other sounds to come through the music.

In essence what it's doing is turning on the phone's mic. You can adjust the sensitivity to your liking.

It works very well and allows you to use any kind of headphone or earbud you want.

I use iBeats by Dr. Dre & I am quite happy with them.

ibeats are the best I've heard. I bought many $100.00 - $150.00 cans & the ibeats are the ones I kept.

MEELectronics CC51-P. They're on Amazon right now for $49.99 and they rival other IEMs that cost $200-$300.

I was very skeptical but I was thoroughly impressed. They come in white and have an inline mic.

They come with three different tips so you can find the right fit and you can buy a whole set of different tips from their site too.

Sol Republic Amps HD are great.

Great design, sound and the tangle free cord is a nice touch.

The on cord remote also works perfectly with iDevices.
