I think I'm going to end up going with a Smart Cover and compatible back shell whenever it's available. Should suit my needs perfectly and at least half of the setup will be available on launch day.

I got a portenzo wingtip. I was looking at the heavy duty protective covers, because my toddler recently shattered my laptop screen, but just went with Applecare+. The portenzo very much suits my English teacher self.

That was my impression too when I first saw it. Here's a YouTube review of the iPad2 version, and the reviewer seemed to like it:

And here's Casemate's video ad, which shows the case being shaken and the iPad doesn't come loose:

I'll know more when I get it. I just want something that's as slim as possible, without flaps, etc., that will be comfortable to hold and use when reading, etc.
Just don't bang an edge or drop it as there's zero perimeter protection.

There seem to be a lot of complaints on Amazon about the quality of the Skinny as well as the tab being a pain. Any experience here? I had the Toblino leather cover for my iPad2 which I love though it is heavy. It's great to hold, look at and is very functional in all positions. But, I'd like an alternative. Surely, somebody has made the PERFECT case!???

The tab does go through a "learning" mode. It is a little stiff when you first get it, but it "learns" to slip right in after a couple weeks use. As for quality, I have had this case on my 2 for around 10 months if I remember correctly. The outer material did begin to separate on the tab a couple months back. Made it hard to get the tab in the loop. I dropped a couple drops of super glue on it, sat something heavy on it for a couple hours, and it has been fine every since. The inside microfiber does look dirty on mine, because it comes in contact with whatever surface you sit the iPad on. I run a bar, so mine has been sat in some nasty, sticky stuff a few times. You will also get some random loose threads around the perimeter of the case from time to time. I burn those off.

All in all I was happy enough with this case to buy the exact same one for the 3. I am a HEAVY iPad user. I would say the front flap gets open and shut 30 times a day on average for me. Maybe more. It goes everywhere with me and I haven't been exactly gentle with it. It gets tossed in the truck every day and gets passed around the bar by a bunch of drunks on a regular basis. I would guess that it has been dropped 8-10 times. The only damage on the iPad is a tiny, < 1 cm chip off of the black plastic 3G antennae. The case has performed well for me.

Re-Ordered the Marware Micro-shell for the "New iPad"...

....and a Red Smart cover from Apple

The combo worked great on my iPad 2 and it still retains the slim form factor s well.

I did something similar. I bought the JoyFactory SmartFit3 (transparent clear) with Skyblue Polyurethane Smart Cover. Putting iPad in my backpack with Incipio Tek-nical carry case.

With a towel in the carry case if necessary to prevent the iPad from damage in the backpack. :D

I've just bought a slip case for now and will get a front and back screen protector, until I see what comes out after launch because it seems near impossible to find much in the UK! :(

Is there any cases you guys picked up super cheap like under 10 bucks cheap? I want something to hold me off until reviews start rolling around.

Per an idea seen in another thread, i picked up some very small magnets to try and attach to the smart feather to hold the apple smart cover in place when folded back.

anyone think that could cause problems for the iPad? i wouldn't think so, but maybe someone has a better idea

Thanks for all of the good ideas guys!

My wifes new iPad comes on Friday and I would like to be prepared with a case. I don't know what level of protection that she wants/needs so I sent her an email. I know if it were mine I'd probably want the same level of protection I give my phone. That is an otterbox commuter with a random clear-film screen protector. It looks like all Otterbox has out now is the Defender series which fully encapsulates the iPad (with a built-in screen protector).

Ideally I'd like something with a *little* bit of drop protection but not as dialed-up as the defender.

Thoughts?
