I suppose for many of us who never had an OS-9, OS-X works best. I don't particulary like the way OS-10 sounds so I'll probably stick with what sounds best even if it is not technically accurate. Kind of like "Bimmer" and "Beemer" I know what is proper but I don't really care.

I usually say OS Ten point Six or Five or Four or whatever when referring to the OS name...I try to be as accurate as possible. But when writing about OS X I write "MacOS X"

Just depends on the day...but more times then not it's "X"

Agreed ^^^

Usually say OS 'X' sometimes say OS ten, when I'm referring to a specific version, I'll say the name (snow leopard, leopard, tiger, etc..) and when I'm referring to a specific update I say just the last 2 parts (six point three, for example).

Depends on the context;

1) If referring to which OS platform I use, I say MacOS X.
2) If referring to which version I use to certain people like people not used to Mac, I usually refer to the brand name, Tiger/Leopard/Snow Leopard and to tech people, ten point 5, ten point 6, etc.

Whenever I hear someone say it as "ex", it makes me cringe. However, I've refrained myself from correcting them now, I don't care anymore. But I'll never say "ex", always OS ten. Also, lɪnəks. ;)

I usually refer to the OS by Tiger, Leopard, Snow Leopard, etc. But if and when I do refer to it as OS X it is OS "Ten". OS "Ecks" or whatever just sounds strange to me.

I say EX even though I know that "officially" it's 10

For example, I have OS EX 10.5.8 Leopard. Redundant, incorrect, completely descriptive. :p

My first mac was OS X, so as some one who never had OS 9 or any of the others, I at first called it OS X, now knowing that X means 10 I just say Leopard or Snow Leopard.

It is OS "ten." There's no argument to be made. This would be like asking, "is it Windows or Wisdown?"

Steve Jobs has NEVER, on-stage, said, "Oh eh sex" unless it was a major lapse in thought.

When you type, "Say OS X" in the terminal, your mac will say, "OS Ten."

Facts can't be debated.

If you say, "Oh eh sex," you're wrong, end of story.

Ex.

I'm just used to saying it that way.

But is it suddenly completely wrong to say a roman numeral out as the letters rather than the number it represents? It's not wrong to say it either way, just what you are used to.

I know, right? I mean who didn't love Star Wars: Episode Vee, The Empire Strikes back?

Who else hated Star Wars: Episode Aye, El A-holio Fantasmo?

Roman numerals are, and this is a bit tricky, numerals!!! Not letters. Geez.

Looks like you've been doing it wrong all this time.

I always end up calling it OS X even when I'm pretty sure it should be called OS Ten.

OS TEN in english... OS X or "mac" in other languages. Seems to be an accepted use among mac users.

cheers,

Gtermianl in 10.6 is twisted in saying OS X or OS ten. If you type the terminal command:
Code:
say "OS X"
and it will say OS Ten.

However if you type the command:
Code:
say "OS X.6"
the machine will say "OS X point 6".

To me this shows that Mac programers sometime don't talk to each other.

Alright, fine I'll concede. But I'm still going to say it the wrong way because frankly, if you want to correct it to my face, you've really got issues.

I knoooow! Isn't it awful when you learn something from a mistake?

Yet, my grandmother still uses "whom" and "who," interchangeably. Sad, I know.

It doesn't really matter if it is technically wrong. English is all sort of complex rules and nobody has it right all the time.

The problem is, OS X is just something that rolls off some people's tongue better than saying OS Ten. Everybody have a different method of saying the same thing, not to mention that ESL people prefer certain wording than other people.

How many people say QuickTime X instead of Ten? I prefer to say X, it's just something my brain wants to say even tho it's incorrect. Apple could've called it Quicktime 10, but they didn't. Why didn't they do 10 instead of X? Keep people from asking where qt 8/9 is? Who knows.
