It doesn't really matter if it is technically wrong. English is all sort of complex rules and nobody has it right all the time.

The problem is, OS X is just something that rolls off some people's tongue better than saying OS Ten.

Except that if Apple had never used the X, we'd never know that saying "OS ten" didn't roll off our tongues.

P.S. How many people share the tongue you speak of? ;)

o-s-sex:cool:

edit: after looking at the post below me i'd like to say that i don't pronounce it that way, that's how i perceive it in my head.

In my experience, a person pronouncing "OS X" with "ecks" immediately received the "You're too stupid to work here" look.

In consulting, that's not a good thing...

it confusing really. Whether Apple had switched to Roman numerals or not after classic, which I think they have switched to Roman numerals.

It's "Ten", but it's much better to say "Ex" because of the entertainment value you get from annoying the sort of dork who genuinely cares about that kind of thing.

Once you've riled the dork, keep insisting on calling it Ex at every opportunity after that.

OS 'ten' as the operating does! Open your terminal and type say "OS X"

I forgot it did this. I was just playing around with it.

If you type say and then:
OS V it says "oh ess vee"
OS VI it says "Oh ess vye"
Windows VII it says "Windows severn"
Windows V it says "Windows vee"

it'e clever ;)

Yeah, I cringe when I hear it pronounced OS "ex." Considering all the builds are 10.6.3, 10.5.8, etc., it's hard to understand how one could think it's not said "Oh Ess Ten."

Here's what I've learned.

The only people who pronounce it "Mac Oh Ess Ten" are Mac users who are — not only geeks — but are also likely to have been using Macs for a long time.

People who say "Mac OS Ess Ex" are Mac users who either:
  1. Never used Macs prior to OS X (i.e. OS 9, OS 8, etc.).
  2. Switched to a Mac from a PC.
  3. or are just not computer people.

Personally, I've used Macs all my life and I'm a geek (I'm on MR, after all). Thus, I pronounce it the correct way: "Mac Oh Ess Ten."

Nope. I used 7, 8 and 9 (or is that VII, VIII and IX?)
I've never owned anything but Macs.
What is a computer people?

I say EX at least in my head. I don't often have a reason to speak it out loud, so I don't really know how it would come out. :p

Hmmmm,
When you see the Roman Numeral X you dont say "Roman Numeral X", you say "Roman Numeral Ten".
If the next OS is called OS XI are you really going to call it "OS Ex Eye"? Really?
It is OS Ten. It isnt up for debate.

It is still a question of choice. Kind of like the "twenty-ten" versus "two thousand ten" debate. (But this isn't exactly similar, everyone ended up saying "twenty-ten")

That reminds me of the people that say "ePod" and "eMac" because that's how it sounds in french if you pronounce it the way it is written. I used to say "eMac", but not anymore since I became bilingual...

The question in the thread title is not "Which is correct?" It is "How do you say it?" I say it incorrectly. I am not Roman.

How do you say that?
(just rhetorical)

Saying "Ou S Ex" is utterly wrong and retarded. You don't say "Vindows" or "Windovs," do you?

I don't see why you would insist on pronouncing it incorrectly. It's very, very, very stupid.

Just wow... I am literally speechless.

I call it OS "Ex"....you calling me a retard?

Maybe you should take your case up with apple for writing it OS X vs OS 10 as not all people think in roman numerals all the time...
