And to piss off the frenchies, we can say "deh juh, vuh," as that's how we would pronounce "deja vu" without the frenchiness.

I don't know what's worse, doing it wrong and not realizing it, or doing it wrong and being fully aware of it.

People say "ex" because that is what Apple wrote....X....not 10
That's exactly why my brain reads it as a letter, not a number. I've actually said it both ways. Now, if I used Roman numerals on a regular basis, that would make a big difference.

I call it 'OS X'. The X is such an integral part of its brand identity, and I see no reason to treat it a version number; Apple certainly doesn't and new, major releases of OS X are versions of OS X, not OS 11, OS 12, and so on.
As was pointed out, 10.1.x to 10.2 was a "major" change, as were 10.3 to 10.6 also. But OS X was completely different from OS 9. We won't see OS 11 until there's a super big, huge, major change.

I don't know what's worse, doing it wrong and not realizing it, or doing it wrong and being fully aware of it.
I think the former, for sure. But the smartest person on the Forum disagrees. ;) It's just a reflex of sorts. My brain sees the letter, and moves past it without converting it to a numeral. I know the X represents the number 10, but I just don't take time to think about it.

It's not retarded to say OS X, no matter how few people here thinks. Either way is fine.

This is no final answer for this. As some would mention, some people have tendency to say twenty ten instead of two thousands and ten. Which is correct?

OS X is also three letters, people can say it quicker than OS Ten like IBM, CIA, etc. Even tho none of those initials have numerals, it doesn't matter. Some people just like saying OS X instead of Ten. All of our brains have its tendency and methods to do things, even if you tell a person that it's incorrect, our brain will continue to do it.

Just get over it.

Why call it the year 2010 at all? It's only by the Gregorian calendar that it's 2010, we all know the earth is a lot older than that, but we're told it's the year 2010 because Pope Gregory XIII (lol Roman numerals) said so. So yes, you follow the inventor who preposed/invented it. Steve Jobs introduced Mac OS X as being Mac OS ten; therefore it is ten.

When can we abolish this rudimentary calendar all together and finally start using star dates?! It's so disgustingly primitive. Thanks a whole freaking heap for keeping us back a thousand years, religion. And **** you too, Pope Gregory ex aye aye aye.

This was the first thing to make me laugh after an abysmal WWDC. Thank you, MrCheeto. :D

You don't have to follow the inventor at all, thing changes all the time.

I feel like I've started tearing the Mac community in two with my simple question. If you notice, it says "how do YOU say OS X?" not "what is correct".

After reading all the comments, it seems like OS Ten is "right" but more so, I want to know how you say it when you say it aloud. :D

I use them both at times.
Shoot me if I'm so wrong. Haha

It is still a question of choice. Kind of like the "twenty-ten" versus "two thousand ten" debate. (But this isn't exactly similar, everyone ended up saying "twenty-ten")

That reminds me of the people that say "ePod" and "eMac" because that's how it sounds in french if you pronounce it the way it is written. I used to say "eMac", but not anymore since I became bilingual...

I say two thousand and ten .

Edit: Just read a load of messages in this thread. Some of you guys really do get stressed out! Who cares? It's not even like you have to hear these people saying it! You just read "OS X" however you like when people post.

If anyone was arguing that X doesn't stand for 10, then I can kind of understand why you'd get worked up about it, but people are just saying how they pronounce it! You can either sit there and be smug that you're saying it the right way by saying ten, mocking those who don't really care and say Ex, or you can just chill out and leave it be. Hell, I even have a video in my sig about how I think some people say something wrong, but it's only a laugh, I don't reeeeeally care like some of you guys seem to be.

We all know X stands for 10.

Some of us say X instead.

Who cares.

Only because with that pronunciation, one of the entendres is lost.

If you pronounce it "Oh, Ess, Ten" the double-entendre is "X" for both "Ten" and "Unix Variant", whereas if you pronounce it "Oh, Ess, Ecks" only the "Unix Variant" meaning remains.

Personally, I like double-entndres in marketing, it's nifty, but little more than that. I much more prefer to be technically accurate, which the "Oh, Ess, Ten" pronunciation is. This is not "tow-mah-toh/tow-may-toh".

Outloud, "point 4" or "point 5" or "point 6"... i would say leopard or tiger or cheetah or snow leopard or panda bears or african tree frog but i can't remember which is which

Should be at least a third choice: 50/50

As it is, I would assume that if I think I say it "Ten" more than 50% of the time, I should vote that way. But, I don't really know. I don't have occasion to say it aloud very often.

OK For the 15th time... open Terminal and type Say osx then type say OS X there is your answer because if the OS does not know ... who does???

Wrong. For the 16th time, the poll is asking how people say it, not what the correct way is.

Ever heard of Brett Favre? He admits that his family pronounces their name incorrectly. I've never heard him give the correct pronunciation by the way.

And what if,, for the 17th time I was telling you how the OS says it, perhaps it has an opinion...:D
