Not impressed to be honest.

IvyBridge CPUs were a given, but the obsession with thin in a desktop setting is simply odd. People may not use those optical drives often, but equally, people don't need their desktop to be thin just for the sake of it. Problems I can see with the new models:

1) Lack of ODD.
2) SD reader is now on the rear I/O cluster, making it basically impossible to access.
3) Reduced thermal envelope means lower class GPUs, the GTX660M on the top end is not a brilliant card, even the RMBP is scoring 660M levels, and a 640M is painful.
4) Bonding the display to the glass is obviously impacting on yield, hence the delay until December for the 27"ers, and is going to make repairs even harder.
5) RAM no longer removable on 21.5"er

Fusion Drive is good, but it isn't new outside of Apple. I'm glad we have a 2011 model in the house.

EDIT: Okay, 675MX and 680MX are better GPUs for the high end 27"

Making it thin on the edge and fat in the middle doesn't really help anything. In the end you lose your side connectivity options like the sd card and optical. ...

Indeed. It's not thin, dammit, the edges are thin. Personally I think it looks silly.

Making a thin computer is not as hard or impressive as Apple claims. Guess what, they make MacBooks, and those don't have big bulges on the top or bottom.

Plus, they raise the price and don't even include an SSD standard? It's 2012, right? You can get a good 128GB SSD for like $80 now. What am I paying extra for?

I think I'm going to buy a Sandy Bridge 27" on Craigslist for ~$1200 this week and save myself at least $600.

as someone who bought a 27" imac in july this year, im relieved to see the new version is not that much off an improvement to make my model feel obsolete.

all the people shouting 'wait, dont buy! a new version is around the corner'....im glad i ignored them. heres your new version, no big leap forward, in fact arguably a step back.

I'm very upset about the new iMac. I was holding off on buying an iMac and now that I see the new one is a piece of crap I'm either going to get the old 27" or switch to PC.

Seriously Apple. Who Gives A CRAP about a thin desktop....

What's amazing about it?
The only thing that impresses me is that Apple really cares how thin the damn edge of their DESKTOP computer can be.

It could be 6 inches thick for all I care if they just put a real graphics card in there.

Wat he said. I'm afraid to see the Mac Pro replacement if there ever is one. HD4000 only, no user replaceable RAM.

They REALLY need to bring back the Mid-Tower something like the G4 Cube

Actually the best thing here is the reduced glare, like with the MacBook Pro retina. That is by far the most important thing for me.

The iMac was never going to be a huge gaming machine anyway. Might as well just buy a Thunderbolt Display (soon updated hopefully with less glare like the new iMac), and buy a seperate computer for heavy duty gaming. I'd actually rather look at a 15'' retina screen for work anyway.

What are you guys talking, on the new imac page it says clearly user servicable Ram for the 27" and GPU option for the 680M GTX with 2GB. Plus 756SSD option... Its awesome...

I think the hard drive options are really limiting. I don't want a fusion drive. I want to be able to manage my data by myself because I am a big boy. To have a real SSD I have to order the 768 GB flash drive. Great.

Memory

The 21.5-inch iMac comes with 8GB of memory and can be configured online with 16GB. On the 27-inch iMac, 8GB of memory comes standard, and you can upgrade to 16GB or 32GB. Configure and buy your iMac at the Apple Online Store and it will arrive with the memory already installed. Or add more memory to the 27-inch model yourself by popping open the easy-to-access memory panel on the back.

What about those who buy the 21.5"? 756GB SSD is also ridiculously expensive from Apple, you will need very deep pockets to buy that one.

Me too ;)

I don't need an optical drive in my MBA and don't use it very often in the iMac but it's handy to know it's there.

Store still not updated so hard to compare, but I think the £1500 it cost me for a refurb base 27" + 16GB RAM + 512GB SSD back in July is looking like a good choice.

Probably take a look at the rMBP 13" though when I replace my MBA next year :D

Amen to that. In all the thousands of posts this year about the iMac, I don't think I read one request for a thinner screen.

There is only one explanation for this: they are nerfing their iMac line to further differentiate it from the upcoming Mac Pro.

beautiful of course

but that fusion drive doesn't sit right with me.

if someone gave me one as a gift, I'd gladly accept, but I really think my 2010 is my last of this particular line. (Watch me eat those words in 2014 ).

1TB (5400-rpm) hard drive in base model iMac. price you pay for thinness also £100 extra in UK!! Apple really are milking their new found fondness for their products.

The Nvidia GTX 680MX, as listed in the specs, is not the 680M that you've mentioned.

The interesting part is that even though the 680 MX is not listed on Nvidia's site yet, if you compare the 675M vs 675MX and the 670M vs 670MX, it seems as though the X is the "super duper" version. Good news.

Why is thinner better? Seriously? I have clumsy cats strolling around. I don't know maybe we have to see it in person. I like something with a little heft to it. Last years 27 is looking good to me.
