What do you guys think of the new iMac

I'm both disappointed and happy with the new iMac. It disappoints me that the ram can't really be upgraded on the lower spec models and the GPU is slower then the 6870. Little disappointed about the DVD drive but I suppose all is going digital download etc.
on a plus side the design is good, screen and thinner overall.

But looking on the apple site you can upgrade the ram and get a gtx 675m or gtx 680m GPU

What's amazing about it?
The only thing that impresses me is that Apple really cares how thin the damn edge of their DESKTOP computer can be.

It could be 6 inches thick for all I care if they just put a real graphics card in there.

If you don't care what it looks like, then get a Mac Pro.

The 680MX must be a MONSTER.

However, I can only imagine how much that option will cost on BTO, since the 680M is not exactly cheap.

!!!!!!!!! Unbelievable pack of bitches on here !?,!!!!,! From the turn of the year most of you ( not all ) have been moaning and contemplating suicide or worse stil,l would by a win pc .

Now the update has come its not good enough. Well here's a question what out there is better??..

:apple: new iMac 21.5 fusion drive :apple: when its available

Why is thinner better? Seriously? I have clumsy cats strolling around. I don't know maybe we have to see it in person. I like something with a little heft to it. Last years 27 is looking good to me.

Yeah WTF about the thinner design.. It's a desktop. Who even cares about a thinner design. What a joke!

Apple basically have said if you stab a cut koala riding a dolphin you can have a nice new 27" iMac for £2,000 and then they go oh wait you need to wait a extra month. Apple ive waited since March for this and then you tell me to wait longer the funny thing is I will line up and tell apple to take my money because im sad like that :(

Amen to that. In all the thousands of posts this year about the iMac, I don't think I read one request for a thinner screen.

There is only one explanation for this: they are nerfing their iMac line to further differentiate it from the upcoming Mac Pro.

Yeah this "thin" mentality when it comes to a "desktop" is a JOKE.

I may have to pick up a iMac 27" refurb.... Or will have to start looking at PC desktop setups.

The Nvidia GTX 680MX, as listed in the specs, is not the 680M that you've mentioned.

The interesting part is that even though the 680 MX is not listed on Nvidia's site yet, if you compare the 675M vs 675MX and the 670M vs 670MX, it seems as though the X is the "super duper" version. Good news.

They must have made some mistakes. They can't be restricting us to the 512MB versions of the 660mx, that would be lame.

no built in optical drive...surely the point of an all in one is that it is 'all in one'? having external drives attached by leads defeats the purpose and is kind of the opposite of the apple aesthetic?

Am I the only one upset with the new prices? Base 27 inch model is 250 Euros more expensive here in Germany than the old one... for what?

First thing came in my mind is, "Why?"

I don't want my desktop to be 5mm thin at the cost of optical drive. I am a photographer and I give my client's DVDs with images and master show in them. Why would remove optical drive? simple answer so they can sell them separately and make more money. Hardware side of thing is not that great either :(

Bottom line, I am glad I got mine refurbished before this anorexic version came out. Not impressed apple, not impressed. I guess they will now stop calling it, "All-in-one"

Lmao alot? Go check out newegg... Literally unlimited # of "better" setups out there.

I am SO sorry for anyone who waited for this POS to be released... Luckily I only waited 3 months compared to many who waited 6 months +

Thinner?

2012 iMac FTL

Really don't see the point of it being thinner on a desktop. Like the idea of reduced glare screen though. Fusion drive looks interesting but is a £200 option on the Mac mini, which is expensive (no idea if portable hard drive size has any impact on that). Overall it will make a nice upgrade from my 2007 white iMac.

Wow,
This forum is full of naysayers.

It's an update people! Why are you expecting a new revolution every 6 months? What a ridiculous expectation? Some screen floating in the air telling how amazingly skilled and good you are as a prosumer? Lol

It's a good update, the only disappointment is the graphic card in the lower end imacs, but that's no surprise...

from what it looks like the 27in you cant replace the ram either have to wait and see when they ship on the 21.5 and i have to get a firewire thunderbolt adapter as i have a wd studio 2 that has usb 2 esata and firewire 800 ports that is running great just to have my itunes still

are you kidding? I've been reading the "what do you expect from the new imac"-like threads every other day and there were many who wanted a thinner imac. now you got it and you're not happy?

"oh a desktop just sits on your desk, who cares if it's thin?"

well a tv also sits on your desk or hangs on your wall but I'm guessing most of you have less-than-an-inch thin tv at home, right? as someone else pointed out, it's an achievement, let them gloat about it.

honestly, I don't think you will notice a 20% drop in gpu. I won't be playing games on mine.

getting a 27" in december, i7, 32gb ram which I will, (thank God), be able to add myself.

The only think that jumps out at me is the there doesn't appear to be a way to upgrade the memory short of pulling the screen. For me at least, that's a problem. I don't mind the lack of the SuperDrive.

My iMac is dying, so I'm now leaning towards a new Mac Mini (quad i7) with a 27" refurbished thunderbolt Cinema display. The most I do is simple movies in iMovie, watches DVDs and some VM for windows.

RAM seems upgradeable:

"four user-accessible SO-DIMM slots"

Honestly, this. I like the new iMac quite a lot. A 680MX, if the 680m is anything to go by, is not a GPU to be laughed at and the pretty flexible storage options and decent CPU do not, imo, make this an underpowered machine. Aside from a more powerful GPU, which Apple would have probably had to make the machine thicker for (something which, let's face it, isn't going to happen), I'm neither surprised nor underwhelmed at this computer. It seems a very good balance of power and looks to me - a great non-professional desktop computer. If you want a professional one then... yeah. Mac Pro, or build a PC if you don't like its specs.

...of course, it's going to be expensive. The baseline 640m, while also expected, is fairly weak. Shame.
