I'm impressed enough with the new iMac to have purchased a refurbished 27 3.4 i7 256 ssd not 10 minutes ago. In this case size doesn't matter and 2 months wait time does.

Thinner than I ever would have imagined, and a good GPU at the high end. Now let's see what's soldered down. Pretty ecstatic that it actually happened though.

MEMORY ON THE 27 INCH IS UPGRADABLE:

From Apple's site: "Or add more memory to the 27-inch model yourself by popping open the easy-to-access memory panel on the back."http://www.apple.com/imac/performance/

On the bottom at the right.

I'll be getting one of these the second they're available to order.

I think.....

Awesome design!

Nice to welcome long due addition of USB 3.0 . Nice to see also the Fusion drive as standard

Not so nice to some folks to wait until December.....:):apple:

I'm pretty disappointed they dropped firewire. There are so many devices that still use it. Now even at home they're forcing us to use an adapter.

I'm glad I have little invested in the Apple ecosystem since their business integrity will likely drive me to Windows.

I am glad I bought my iMac in July. The new doesn't have anything I want except probably USB 3.0. It does look cool though....

I agree, I bought mine in august and dont regret it. I was partially excited about the fusion drive, but you can just get a 256gb ssd and have a certified apple repair place install it for $90. Or just install it yourself. USB 3.0.... meh. i really couldnt care less. if i want to hood up an external hard drive to my mac i would use thunderbolt. i hate the thin design. it just rubbing it in that they dont really care about consumer needs and just want to make fuel this THIN EVERYTHING revolution. I am going to upgrade my imac when they add a retina display.

Wow,
This forum is full of naysayers.

It's an update people! Why are you expecting a new revolution every 6 months? What a ridiculous expectation? Some screen floating in the air telling how amazingly skilled and good you are as a prosumer? Lol

It's a good update, the only disappointment is the graphic card in the lower end imacs, but that's no surprise...

there was a new imac 6 months ago? i dont think so. this update is negligible. suits me, i had to update this past summer and am relieved i did so and disnt listen to all the 'clued up' smart arses saying , wait, dont buy!

It may look pretty and all, Apple is a bit obsessed when it comes to being thin for something an extra half an inch is not really going to matter, now for those who want a true all in one no longer have that.

Worst iMac update ever. Who cares how thin and light a DESKTOP is. Also I bet there is not room to install your own SSD and probably no extra SATA ports. Also it looks like the ram is built into the motherboard like the Macbook Air. I will stick with my 2011 iMac. At this rate my next computer will be a custom built desktop/hackintosh.

Not stoked on the price. Entry iMac has always been a great value, now it seems its a bit over the top, also 27 inch starts at a price that I am not willing to accept, shame.

Also, upgradeablity doesnt seem great.

sorry but maybe I missunderstood something : is the fusion drive standart? in all versions?

as someone who bought a 27" imac in july this year, im relieved to see the new version is not that much off an improvement to make my model feel obsolete.

all the people shouting 'wait, dont buy! a new version is around the corner'....im glad i ignored them. heres your new version, no big leap forward, in fact arguably a step back.

i agree! no ODD, SD card on the back... this is a downgrade.

Well, on the bright side they didn't stick in the performance sapping retina display in there. I am quite pleased about that. I might get this, depending on how much a decent configuration costs in comparison to a pro.

No, it's not. Check out the specs. A normal mechanical hard drive is standard.

I like your attitude, rather than bashing it like so many other people who bought earlier. You made a good choice, since you got a few extra months with an awesome new computer, while I and many others were tortured. We'll still be tortured until they start shipping.

Thin is good and all, that likely should be the most important on a laptop and not worry as much for the system on ones desk.

thats what I thought...guess nobody can estimate the extra cost for the fusion drive realistic right ?

Mixed emotions on this I think, I was holding off buying a BTO 27" with the i7 chip and 2gb gfx and 256 ssd because I wanted to see how the processor speeds would go on the new one.

As a photographer i still use the optical drive a fair bit, so I'm gutted to lose that tbh. Yeah I know I can get an external drive but that defeats the purpose of having an all in one machine. Also, does anyone have any experience with the thunderbolt to firewire adaptor ? I'm a drobo user and it looks like i'll be needing some way to attach my storage to the new iMac.

Anyone have an idea of how long it'll be before you can customise the BTO 27"?

I'm hoping they still allow you to select a wired keyboard as i use the USB ports on the KB more than the ones on the back.

are you kidding? I've been reading the "what do you expect from the new imac"-like threads every other day and there were many who wanted a thinner imac. now you got it and you're not happy?

"oh a desktop just sits on your desk, who cares if it's thin?"

well a tv also sits on your desk or hangs on your wall but I'm guessing most of you have less-than-an-inch thin tv at home, right? as someone else pointed out, it's an achievement, let them gloat about it.

honestly, I don't think you will notice a 20% drop in gpu. I won't be playing games on mine.

getting a 27" in december, i7, 32gb ram which I will, (thank God), be able to add myself.

The Apple display can be as thin as they can make it. Too bad we're SUPPOSED to be getting computers attached to that screen, unlike with our TVs.

The design is awesome, but I'm disappointed in the gimped 21.5" hard drive. Unless I spring for the fusion drive for an extra $250 (I assume from Mac Mini pricing), I'll be stuck with a slow hard drive. So that $1500 becomes $1750. Being stuck with the base model (the model I always buy) with that slow of a drive is not even an option. I can't believe they did that.
