1. Bring the Messages app more up to snuff with its OSX counterpart. This means support for other messaging services like Yahoo and Jabber (so you don't need multiple IM apps just to keep in contact with all your friends and family), personalized text bubble colors, and of course a quick reply feature.

2. Increased interconnectivity between Apple devices while they are on the same network*. For instance it would save time if my caller ID and text messages could appear as notifications on my Macbook, and even more time if I could view and reply to the aforementioned text messages from the OSX messages app.

*Or, alternatively, through a BT 4.0 Low Energy connection while the devices are sitting next to each other.

A better phone app and Visual voicemail.

It's time for Apple to step up to the level of Google voice and Youmail

- Manage contact groups on the phone.
- Multiple voicemail greetings. Per group or contact.
- voicemail dictation.
- The ability to purchase voicemail greetings on the App Store.. Including smart greetings. There should also be reject greetings which can be assigned to unknown and blocked callers.. Do not allow them to leave a voicemail
- Voicemail folders. Trash, junk, archive, custom
- The ability to open voicemails in another app and share via the universal share menu.
- iCloud voicemail syncing.
- Call recording. Calls could be saved under a recorded folder in the voicemail tab by default.. And then moved to other folders and shared just like voicemail.
- call blocking expanded to include unknown blocked numbers

Some of these features would obviously require Apple to provide its own voicemail service.. Perhaps they should purchase a company like Youmail or HulloMail.

And of course.... A universal quick reply... With an API that allows any messaging app to use it..

1. Filesystem
Nothing too radical or complex. I would be happy with what's been discussed recently - a file view which presents a list of apps that are holding files, and then when you drill into an app you get a list of its files and folders.

2. More DND options
A weekly schedule might be nice. Also the option to allow texts from chosen groups too.

3. More Alarm options / APIs
Volume distinct from the ringer, perhaps even per alarm; fade in options. If Apple doesn't want to change the stock Alarm app, then they should at least provide a dedicated alarm notification system for third party alarm apps which do provide the missing functionality. Currently using the regular notification system, a backgrounded alarm app's notifications are silenced by DND, they can't have a fade in, and the sound is limited to a certain length.

I can dream and hope for all sorts of new features but realistically what I want, because I think that within the constraints of what the developers can deliver and what would be best for my user experience over the next 18 months, iOS 8 should be the software equivalent of an iPhone "S" release - not too many changes on the surface but lots of improvements inside.

iOS 7 was a crash-prone mess for many of us, 7.0.4 still is for me (daily Safari crashes on my iPad Air), and until 7.1 is officially released which if rumours are true won't be until March it looks as if we are unlikely to get back to anything like the stability of iOS 6 until then. I don't believe that Apple can or should risk any changes that are big enough to be potentially disruptive as far as stability and performance are concerned; it can't afford to have the same issues again with iOS 8.

In my view this year's major iOS release is the perfect opportunity to pause and take stock. The hardware release should be far from an "S" release this year if the rumours are true so the physical changes that might come with the iPhone 6 should be more than enough to take the attention away from the OS for this refresh cycle. Also, if the rumoured increase in screen size does happen then optimising battery life will be critical so focussing most of Apple's developer effort on optimising every single bit of iOS 8 that they can in order to make iOS 8 as CPU/battery efficient as possible and to generate as little radio traffic as it can when doing background activities (push, fetch, notification, sync, location, etc) would really help to build the overall iPhone 6 message - "We've held off doing bigger screen until we could do it right - keep the device amazingly thin and light and we've not only maintained battery life with the bigger screen, we've gone even further and increased it significantly". In my opinion that would be a very strong message for the next iPhone launch and would be one that would have me purchasing an iPhone 6 on launch day even if iOS 8 looked exactly the same as iOS 7.1. The benefits would also be felt with all other iOS devices as well of course.

Would like to be able to select multiple email accounts but not all. On weekends and holidays I don't want to see work emails so let me tick my other two email addresses. Currently if I want to "hide" work emails I have to manually turn of syncing with work which causes problems if I get called to deal with something. How hard can it be?

1) File browser.
2) Easier ways to get files into emails, reply with attachments etc.
3) More than one app on screen at a time, especially on iPad. Want to watch a football game and surf the web at the same time, or write an email while referring to a document or another email.
4) Allow plugins, like adblock, for safari browser.

I think the most obvious thing is airdrop between mac and ios.

As much as I love Apple products it frustrates me how features that are totally ready for release today are withheld to keep us wanting and waiting for more.

Able to search phone number on phone app directly? For example, I want search phone number for a store inside a mall, you can search it directly on phone app on Android kitkat...
This is part of the updated phone app in iOS 7.1?

If it is, then that is great. I do not know, because I am not using iPhone anymore... I am only an iPad and Mac user now
It isn't as far as I know. That was part of the reason I asked the question to someone who mentioned that he dialer was made better in 7.1.

1. File browser is must. I am keeping one if my iPad jailbroken because I need iFiles and storage expansion. However, I m doubt Apple would ever make one

2. Easier to send email attachment is must as well. But given sandbox nature, I doubt it will be any easier

3. This one is no no for next few years. iOS is never being designed base on multi windowing.

4. This one probably never happen as well
