Most of the 'features' listed in this thread are improvements to current apps. What about big new features like TM for 10.5 and Spotlight for 10.4?

ichat....

it shouldnt be hard to add the support, if aduim can do multiprotocals surely apple can, aduim does it well no denying thatthen there are the likes of amsn and mercury which are awful in my opinion but id love to see the day were i can hit the ichat button and never have to worry about msn again, and skype support to would be nice for some.

aside from this id love to see a gui over haul as mentioned earlier there are some incosistances between the brushed metal and aqua i think a fresh look would be nice.

strange

it's strange Anti-Microsoft, you are anti-microsoft but you will "PAY ANYTHING just to get MSN(Microsoft)"
:)

This is a good point. I want to hear cool ideas for new features, too.

One of the big new things I'm hoping for is Cocoa Touch support in 10.6, for for real touchscreen computers to take advantage of :)

I can't really think of what else to add right now....

But Apple is more brilliant than I ;)

less bugs

less bugs would be nice, i know we are only at 5.2 but im still having bugs pops up and quicktime i think by the time we hit 10.6 quicktime is given a over haul with more file types supported natively and less crashes.

few basic programs like paint or something would be nice added to the next iwork suite doesnt have to be anything major but it would look nice in with pages, numbers and keynote.

maybe they could take a leaf from toast now at version 9 and add a more featured burning program, it doesnt have tio be anywhere near as powerful as toast but a few more features wouldnt hurt would they

1. A controversial issue, I know, but.... The ability to stretch a window from any edge.

2. I would like to be asked where I'd like to save downloaded files.

3. I would also like the ability to turn off the start-up Dong.

1. Only if it doesn't change the GUI. At all. But more options for window control would be pretty cool, if one could hold down a key combo and then be able to resize windows from anywhere, and move them from anywhere. Say, holding Ctrl + Cmd or something changes to "window control" mode. Or F7 or something--make it a new feature of Expose! Keep windows where they are, but shade them like in Expose, giving the ability to move them from anywhere on the window, and resize from any corner/side. A perfect answer to anyone who complains about these things that doesn't impact the GUI at all, and even fits in perfectly with an existing feature.

2. It won't let you tell it where? When I right click files I want to download there's an option to "Save to Downloads" or "Save as...." I can save files anywhere.

3. I think there are ways to do this by holding down mute or something like that, but I'm not sure.

3. I would also like the ability to turn off the start-up Dong.

Mute your computer in OS X. Though as a feature it would be good. If you held down Mute at startup or something.

2. Safari Menu>Preferences>General>Save Downloads To.

Apple won't integrate FTP because they want you to sign up for dot Mac (.Mac)! Not because they care about other FTP apps. haha.

Oh heres my list:

I want to change the entire aqua color and customize it, maybe set it on a timer to change the color of it every hour or something

I want a safer Safari, PayPal says that safari is unsafe and is vulnerable to phishing

Maybe more integration with finder and more light weight apps. Like you can play a song in Finder without having to keep the window open to view it in quick look.

Back to my last point, more light weight apps, like garage band with come with just an audio capture device so i don't have to run the entire app complete with tracks, magic garage band etc just to capture my voice.

A graphic organizer web type thing in dictionary connecting wikipedia pages, (Like if i wanted to look up MLK it would show me web of like MLK in the center with branches going out to like Rosa Parks, Malcolm X, Civil Rights. then it would branch out from rosa parks to show like the montgomery bus boycott, her husband, etc.) You get the point

Maybe when I magnify it would be nice if it actually scaled up the graphics and made them look crisp and not pixelated (i can't expect that from lets say a photo but the UI i would like to see nice and crisp)

Enable 2 menu bars for 2 monitors

I think it would be cool if you could send a file to someone or leave it on your computer and when it opened you would have like 30 seconds to read it and then it would self destruct, this might be a very (mission) impossible goal however.

An improved iChat, when ever I try and video/audio/screen share it gives me an error! i have to download skype!! agh

I would like a hardware change too, i want an infrared/thermal camera in addition to my iSight! "iSee Heat" maybe just improved night vision.

1. A standalone searcher for Spotlight like there used to be in Tiger. They improved searching capabilities greatly in Leopard, but I wish they would have kept the standalone Spotlight window instead of dropping it into the Finder.

2. They NEED to fix iCal. I hate having to double-click every freakin event to find out anything about it. And I CANNOT BELIEVE they would do something so stupid as remove icons denoting "extra notes" for an event. There used to be a small icon on the event in Weekly View that would tell you, "Hey, you got an extra note on this event."

3. I wish they'd give us the power to choose to open or close certain ports of our choice in the firewall again like in Tiger. If this option exists in Leopard, I haven't found it. I can allow all, only essential apps, or specific apps (choose them in a Browse dialog), but I can't choose my own ports.

4. Change the stupid Xcode hammer icon back to the other direction...

5. Enable the Developer Mode of the Dashboard, but don't cover windows with the Widgets... Keep them on the desktop, but don't cover every single thing.

6. Allow us to change system icons (System Preferences icon, /System folder icon, etc.)

7. More overall "look" options. Why is the Menu Bar so constricted? Why can I not move the icons into the order of my choosing? Why can I not move my clock? Why does my Finder icon have to be on the left of the Dock, and the trash on the right? Why do I even have to have a Dock? What if I don't want one?

Edit: I'd like to see Time Machine be able to pick up from where it was last before a system restore.

And I would actually like to see OS XI instead of a 10.6 :p

You can. Just hold command down, then click and drag them. Some badly-coded 3rd party menu items can't be moved around, but all the good ones and all of Apple's can be re-ordered however you like.

Btw, if you didn't have a Dock, how would you know which applications are open or not?

But you're right about more visual options. Apple really needs to offer the option to get our 10.5.1 translucent menus back.

1. run ALL windows game natively
2. advanced 3D desktops, customizable
3. slim down to 5G
4. better font AA.

1. run ALL windows game natively
Not going to happen, MS doesn't license DirectX and Apple doesn't ship reverse-engineered hacks.

2. advanced 3D desktops, customizable
3D desktops are a complete gimmick. They solve no UI problems, and introduce a lot of new ones. Until we have true 3D displays which we can manipulate in 3D space, a 3D UI is meaningless.

3. slim down to 5G
So, you want MORE features... but you want it to be smaller.

4. better font AA.
Considering Apple's rendering of fonts looks far better than Windows', I'm gonna go ahead and say... no.

too bad

huh, I don't think so, I would put that as a personal opinion, isn't that what this discussion is intended for?
So, you want MORE features... but you want it to be smaller.
Why is that so surprising? I don't see any feature I mentioned need more than 50MB disk space. On the other hand, 10G+ for an OS is just.....

LOL, persona opinion again, better means what? Oh wait, did I say "as good as windows"? I did NOT! :)

It's ironic...aaand I hate MSN...but...sadly...I HAVE NO ALTERNATIVE:(...all my friends use MSN messenger...

Not really - try meebo which negates the need to use an app as it is a web based chat client . It does multiple IM clients, AIM, Google, MSN, Yahoo among others.

Also allows you to use IM at work if downloading and using such apps is blocked :)

It's not personal opinion, 3D desktops on 2D platforms are useless. That's a fact. Me thinking it looks fugly is a personal opinion.

Again, fact.

its a funny way to produce fact, isn't it? what study shows what you said are "facts"

I'd like to see some sort of Power User. I can either give users access to very little or everything

Ideas

For those of you talking about high temperatures on your Macbooks, try smcFanControl http://homepage.mac.com/holtmann/eidac/ - I've been using it for some months now and my Macbook Pro is over 10˚C cooler.

---

As for ideas, I'd like to echo some of the previous ideas posted

1. Trash: being able to delete individual files and restore to original location

That is probably my most missed feature since my conversion from Windows

2. Reveal hidden files as a quick (right click) finder option

3. Option of having Apps in menu bar instead of Dock, handy for certain apps which you just want to run in background - like a clipboard app.

4. Do be able to quicklook downloaded files, i.e. in Firefox, Safari, Skype (in their download panes) - probably related to the app themselves but still :)

5. Inbuilt keyboard command for *optimise/maximise* - I have a quicksilver hack running but isn't that smooth.

6. More advanced Spaces: -

- the ability to create *temp* spaces. For example, I operate with 6 spaces normally but sometimes I just want that added random space. Would be nice to just type ^7 and a 7th space would be created as an addition to the spaces block and would collapse once anything running in it has closed.

- the ability to have odd number of spaces

- to be able to arrange the spaces in your own way without disrupting your current layout. For example, when you add another column, it reorders all your spaces, so instead of having my standard

1 2
3 4
5 6

Becomes

1 2 3
4 5 6
7 8 9

Insignificant you might say, and it probably is can be rather annoying after using the same layout for some time and using the arrow commands to get around. Similarly, when you do that, it breaks some of the connections Apps have to a space due to the way it does it if you remove that column.

7. Advanced Expose. I love everything about expose but would like to have some further adjustments. One of the options is to zoom all the windows out which I use regularly. However, I would like a similar option in which the windows would float away from each other to the maximum extent of the page. When you have 5 windows on top of each other, its tedious moving them around to see them all.

8. The auto expanding columns in finder for longer file names was a great addition that someone mentioned earlier :)

9. Quick Text Edit. Sometimes I like to just type in some text, write a little not for whatever reason without having to start an app to do it. Something like QuickLook which runs all the time but would allow you to just input text would be something nice :)

Mac OS 10.6

ZFS, "Illuminous," Cocoa Touch, Resolution Independence, Full Screen mode for more apps, iCal info window back (hopefully in a coming 10.5.x), and Uninstall, among other things i'm sure Apple will amaze us with!

AWESOME idea. Maybe even a 10.5.x update?
