– a 5MP camera
– thinner body

Back to school for you. More, actually useful, megapixels of resolution requires a larger lens (so as not to be diffraction limited and noisy), which requires a longer focal length, which will make the phone thicker. An autofocus mechanism might add additional thickness as well.

Couldn't the camera app just make the home button become the camera button, and then two clicks will take you to the home screen and three clicks becomes your standard double click?

If not, I'm still advocating dedicated camera button or the entire screen.

Seems like too much work. A dedicated button would be much simpler...plus, that would change the uniform functionality of the home button throughout the rest of the apps/phone.

-enhanced camera.
-specialized side button. (maybe even two). can be used for picture capture and also be accessed in the SDK for the apps to have access to a physical button
-General enhancements (battery, reception, screen, gps)

edit: there is NO way apple will use the home button to take pictures. not happening. they would use the volume button or create an entirely new button before they would do that

Even if they wouldn't  you have to admit that would be awesome.

You know, I would LOVE if it had a really great camera that could take just as good as my Canon camera. I don't take my camera everywhere, but i do take my iPhone everywhere, it is a great thing to have when you need to capture a moment.

I know I'm going to get lots of people making fun of me for this, but why can't they make a waterproof iPhone in the same way that they make waterproof digital cameras? It sounds plausible, right?

Not with keeping a nice form factor. Ive never seen a good looking waterproof....anything.

There IS that spray stuff that you can get for your electronics that completely waterproofs them, but its $120.

Digital compass.
802.11n
32/64GB Storage
Tiny LED next to the speaker showing green if you have notifications or red for low battery.
A hybrid speaker/microphone for stereo music and louder ringtones, also fewer "omg one speaker doesn't work" threads.
Auto-focusing camera that can focus closer, also higher resolution.
Make the Apple logo on the back a flash for the camera. On the white ones it might be possible to just have it look white and blend in with the plastic.
Make the screen bigger and fill nearly the entire front of the phone, also make it higher resolution.

That's all I can think of.

I would LOVE a little LED notification light, but knowing Apple it will never happen.

But then, there is the little green like when recording. We can only hope.

I would never want a flash on the iPhone unless it it is hidden extremely well. Flash's make phones look ugly IMO.

The obvious...
32GB.
Better camera; even though the camera is really nice for being on a phone.
Thinner.
A couple more colors.
Bette processor; most likely the one that the 2G iPod touch has.
A bit more ram.
Longer battery life.
Improved speakers.

Pretty much same as you. Except I'll add a2dp bluetooth and longer battery life even if it has to fatten up a bit, I don't really care for carrying the thinnest phone ever made or anything like that. I mean, I don't want it to be an inch thick or anything but if that's what it takes to have great battery life and a more powerful processor and more storage then so be it!

How could you possibly go any thinner than it already is? I guess maybe ipod touch thin is what you all are referring to.

Maybe just twice as thin as the iPod touch.
I suppose maybe three years from now it will be that thin.
The iPod touch is too thin if you ask me.*picks up iPod touch and look at how thin it is.*

The LED light as others have mentioned.

And one or two unobstrusive keys on the side that will open a preselected program. It would allow unfettered access to one or two important applications, such as the SMS app or iPod app.
