Says who? Reports suggest it will have a very wide angle, to the point where it could be laying flat on a table and still read your face.

Who knows what’s true, just one full day to go!
But your face would still need to be within its field of view to activate the face unlock. It's not the eye of Sauron!

What reports?

If it’s the case then, and it’s works as well or better than fingerprint then I’m sold.

Bunch of reports mentioned in these forums. As I say no clue how accurate they are but I imagine Apple will have thought this through in great detail.

Well yeah obviously but why would you want to unlock it with it facing away? Whenever I use Apple Pay I can see the screen, so I have to think the IR camera will be able to see me

I can unlock my phone with Touch ID even if I'm not looking at it or it's faced downwards.

It's not about being scared of change. I just want options. Samsung have managed to keep the fingerprint scanner (albeit in an awkward place). Yet there is also iris scanning, face unlock, heck you can even use a voice command to unlock your phone.
Well, but all options are half-baked at best. Both the iris scanner as well as the face unlock feature have been tricked. And Apple would have been torn to pieces if they had implemented the same placement of the fingerprint sensor. But Samsung of course is celebrated. Let's just call it a day. You like Samsung and I like Apple.
I want solutions that work. Apple was never the first. And it's not about being the first.

Yes, that is my main use-case. Unlocking my phone without looking at it. -.-

Yes. I still want a more discrete method of unlocking my phone which doesn't involve using a pin or pattern. There are times when I wouldn't want to have to hold the phone up to my face to unlock it.

Also I'm sure that sometimes you will unlock your phone with face ID when you didn't intend to. Touch ID is very deliberate and I don't find myself unlocking my 7 plus accidentally.
Yes, but what is the problem with unintentional unlocking? We have found code that indicate that there is awareness detection. So if you look at your phone it unlocks, but if you stop locking or someone takes your phone (while your on the lockscreen) the phone would lock again.

But what about if I just want to check the time or look at my notifications?

Touch ID has also been spoofed that doesn't make it insecure to me. I still feel safe in the knowledge that my iPhone and iPad Pro have Touch ID.

Look at my signature I like Apple too, more than Samsung. I just don't think the iPhone X is good value for money. I'm still keeping my 7 plus and all my other apple products.

When you put your finger on Touch ID (without pressing anything) your phone is unlocked but stays on the lock screen. You then lock your phone when putting it away? The same will happen with Face ID. When you are on the combined lock / notification screen, your face will continuously be scanned. As long as your face is there it's unlocked, as soon as your phone is put away it locks again. I don't really see the problem here?

But I think it will be quite quick so if I want to read my notifications it might have Unlocked already.

If Touch ID was still there I wouldn't be concerned because I could just disable face unlock if it was giving me problems. I don't want to go back to using a passcode.

Yes, but i still don't get what the problem is when it is unlocked? The view on your screen will be the same? And as soon as the phone turns of the screen it's locked again. And Apple has raise to wake, maybe they have something similar for the other way around (something like lower to lock or so)

Unlocking the phone doesn't mean its going to the homescreen. It means you CAN go to the home screen without entering a pin, but you will have to swipe or something to get there.

So if someone else picks up my phone will it repeatedly try to unlock, then require the passcode after the many failed attempts? What if they are just handing it to me?

From how it's been described, it'll be seamless and unlock when you're paying attention to the screen, and then lock when you put it away. Honestly, a lot of unknown fine details here in this regard. At this point tomorrow will bring a lot of clarity to the subject.

I am hoping for a big surprise: The elongated home button is a functional touch id button. Why else would they make it longer?

Makes sense. I more so remember how they changed the behavior of the lock screen. It makes sense now with the upcoming changes.

You guys are magicians with your ability to use Touch ID in almost every scenario possible without issue. What if you don’t have to look at the camera at all? What if you don’t have to even think about the authentication process and it quietly scans your face in the background? This could be better than Touch ID.

And then again it probably isn’t better than Touch ID

Good point, oh wait didn’t people (Craig Federighi) already use it today! ;)

Yup it seemed to work well after they screwed up by grabbing the phone that was restarted prior. Apparently all the hands on afterwards say it worked every time under a variety of circumstances also.
