Fall and summer. Spring and summer too before it gets too hot. I like the fall because it's when all the good hand made candy makers make their best stuff like amaretto cinder toffee. Yummy.

Winter. I love the rain and the wind. I love the early coming of night, that gives me license to go home, do nothing and be comfortable.

I was talking with my wife a while ago and this topic came up.

I have to say that Autumn is my favorite time of the year. I absolutely love the cooler weather, the leaves changing and all that is fall.

We recently talked about moving to Florida (nothing serious just doing a fun what-if type of conversation), what we both realized is that we'd miss this time of year.

I'm planning a camping trip next month just so I can fully enjoy the weather :D

So what is your favorite time of year and why?

Winter time can be nice when all the snow is on the ground. It looks so pretty for the first few hours... Especially that first snow you get!

Indeed, but by the third or fourth storm enough is enough :)

Beautifully expressed, with a heartfelt depth of feeling - even if I find myself in complete disagreement with every single, last syllable you have written.

The only thing I like about snow is that weird all absorbing velvet silence. Utter and total spellbound silence. Snow absorbs sound. It reflects light, but it absorbs sound. Actually, it is astonishing.

But nice? No, not at all.

Ah, heaven's - yes, agreed. Completely.

Necroing my old thread for an update and add some thoughts, as my opinion has changed in some ways

1. I used to enjoy the summer, but as I've gotten older the heat has been more difficult to deal with, which I understand is a natural part of getting older.
2. Unlike prior years, I'm looking forward to winter, especially not given feels like 60th day of high 80s and high humidity. I understand some parts of the country and world have longer or hotter summers, but in New England, I truly do love the changes and cooler weather. For the first time in recent memory, I'm aching to see some cold weather and snow

Back when I started this thread three years ago, I had mentioned the possible desire of moving to FLA. Out last trip to Orlando basically confirmed that FLA heat is not for us.

1. Spring 2. Summer 3. Fall 4. Winter

Don’t like winter these days, that’s why spring is best.
Liked the cold more when younger. Some years I can like the deeper rest winter can give, if it’s not too cold.
Mostly winter just creates problem.
The rest follows accordingly

I would say that spring and summer are tied for first place in my book. Then again, I do enjoy our long winters as well, it's just that while in the military the mindset that I'd rather sweat than freeze any day of the week crystallized itself pretty clearly one night while standing guard at -30° and not being allowed, or able to move around very much.

But I guess I'd go crazy if I didn't enjoy the dark and cold wintertime, since that's most of our year. Ok, that maybe a bit of an exaggeration, but there is a saying here that goes something like "I really enjoyed last summer. It was on a wednesday, if memory serves." This year, though, the summer has been unseasonably warm, which is nice.

So in conclusion, I'm not quite sure what my favorite season is. What I am sure of, is that it's very nice to be able to really experience all of the seasons every year.

I'll rank mine in order of favorite to least favorite.
  1. Autumn
  2. Winter
  3. Spring
  4. Summer
I much prefer the cool to cold weather these days and I really dislike the hot weather. Autumn is the best for me as the weather is crisp and cool and the color of the trees are wonderful.

In Europe we are in the middle of a heatwave. I have to say I've had enough and am looking forward to autumn for some cooler weather.
Also for some nice photography.

I'm extremely tolerant towards heat (I've had no problem dealing with 40C temperatures for example) yet absolutely can't stand even the slightest cold. And living in a country where temps drop down to -20 in the winter, you can imagine that I really, really dislike winter. I'm still debating though whether I prefer spring or summer, I feel more energized and more motivated to do things during the summer because I love heat but at the same time spring is typically more calm and more rainy (I love rain).

Looking at this thread again, I feel that asking which seasons are someone's favourite is a rather vague question because seasons heavily change depending on where you live, so answers may not be accurate to the actual weather that people like. In some places I think that I'd much prefer winter over summer.

I lived in South Florida for a year and really missed the seasons. Now, living in Texas it’s not much better. There is no proper Spring or Fall, just 80s Summer, 90-100s Summer, 70-80s Fall, 40-60s Winter, with brief dips into freezing. One day, it’s 50ish, not unusual to then leap into the 80s. That said, a proper Fall is my favorite. Minnesota had wonderful Falls, but had a too too long Winter. Lived there for 3 decades.

Fall in California just means more wildfires these days. But I guess ultimately fall is my favorite. I enjoy summer because I travel and exercise more in summer, but the smog and fires (not to mention the yellow-jackets) make it less enjoyable for me.

My favorite season is back to school. It's a rebirth!

When I was at school (that is school, meaning school, not college, or university, which is what we understand by the term, This Side Of The Pond), I wasn't all that crazy about "back to school".

University, both as a student and a teacher, was very different; then, I loved "back to school."

Exactly. Students love school when they're very young, and they grow to dislike it. I want them all to love it. I still get so excited the night before the first day of school that I can't sleep.

Yes, agreed, and what a positive approach to education: Personally, I loved primary school - disliked - intensely - second level education - and adored university, both studying and teaching.

Disliked primary and secondary school. Too many rules.
Left education at 15.

University is brilliant - the assumption s that people are there because they want, or wish, to be there, and that they have an interest in what they are studying, as they have chosen to study this field.

And, yes, rules don't apply to the same extent, but one can still insist on basic courtesy.

Actually, I used to say to my students that I was a paid university teacher, not a policeman; thus, I was not going to chase them if they didn't attend class, or pursue them for term papers and essays (although, occasionally, yes, I admit that I did the latter), that whether they worked or not was up to them, but that I would help them to try to do so, but that I expected the basic courtesies that I extended to them to be reciprocated.
