Maybe I'm naive but I really don't see any problems with lines or such. They don't need to activate the device in stores and knowing Apple they will have plenty of stock. What ever lines do exist will go by pretty fast.

I hope there will be plenty of stock so I can go to the Apple store Saturday morning and get one. The closest Apple store is in another state which has no sales tax. If I order one online, I will have to pay sales tax, which would amount to the cost of an accessory, such as cover or camera connection kit.

If they are out of the model I want, I will order at the store and then pick it up when it comes in. I don't mind waiting, but I am eager to get it.

On the other hand, it might be exciting to stand in line at the Apple store on Friday night. ;)

I took work off gonna go drop off my old ipad to the person that bought it grab the cash and drive to NH around noon to stand in line. then walk out with a GSM white ipad 32gb. and leather smart cover (dunno what color yet). I think around 4 hours early will be good enough. worse comes to worse ill get the 64gb if the 32 is sold out.

Im guessing the lines will be roughly the same as the first iPad.

For the first one, I showed up to the Apple store around 3:30-4:00pm, and managed to get one no problem. Granted, this was the brand new Apple store in Arizona (and so they had a TON of stock), and I wanted the most expensive model (they will sell out of 32gb way faster than 64gb).

Still... No need to camp out or anything silly like that. Apple always has an insane amount of supply on launch days. Plus... More retailers are having it day one this time around too.

You'd better find out ahead of time whether or not the Apple store will accept cash for this purchase....they may not, due to wanting to avoid problems with people who go in there and buy up a bunch of iPads in order to sell them somewhere else (eBay, another country, etc.).

I don't have any store besides Best Buy near me and I'm a university student w/o a car, so I'm stuck with that or order online.

Buying: 16GB Wifi, Black

My plan -- call Best Buy the morning or day before launch and ask what time they start selling, what their stock looks like, if I can have them put one aside for me

If it looks like there won't be much of a wait, buy it at Best Buy. Otherwise, order it online

Good luck with getting them to put one aside for you

yeah last year when I bought my ipad I paid half cash and half credit. they had to ok it with a manager. ill probably do the same thing this year. ill call earlier in the week.

Can anyone else attest to this? Because that will make waiting in line a lot more tolerable, haha.
This varies by store. My store handed out Smart Water during the 3GS launch but as to the iPad and iPhone 4 launches, there wasn't anything provided. Sometimes it really comes down to how crazy the lines are and management deciding to get something locally for all the people waiting. It's really a case-by-case situation...

I plan to get up at 7 and drive to work. Then I plan to waste a good 3 hours of my worktime surfing this site with my old iPad and read the threads of people who complain that they didn't get an iPad.
Then I surf to the threads of the people who bought an iPad and have buyers remorse about their color choice. The I will briefly look into the "The new iPad is not worth the money" threads to see some action. I will resist the urge to troll though.

Then to give the day a good vibe I'll switch over to the "OMG I love my white iPad" threads.

In the end it's a great tablet and everybody will be happy.

Then I will start looking at the iPad 3 threads.

Nice. Sounds like my work day too :D

1. Buy three iPad
2. Enjoy one iPad
3. Sell two to the Asian market on ebay who are excluded from launch
4. Profit!!!

There's the action plan! But I'm sure many are already doing that.

let's see. if target has ipad 2 in stock, i'll hop around there just before 5 pm, and pick up one. i doubt they will sell out and/or have a long line, seeing that there's an apple store, best buy and wal-mart within a 10 minute drive of said target.

if they don't, i wait. simple as that.

As far as what they give our for free stuff food related, I think it is up to the manager.

We got free water, granola bars, snack mix, etc. That was iPhone 3g and 4.

Me and my friend have decided we don't want to get online until there's about 100 people on line, so we're going to go at Noon and go back every half hour or so after that until the line is that long, and if it ever gets that long we'll get on. If not we'll just walk in at 5 and pick it right up. We both want 64GB so I expect they won't run out of those too quick.

Do you all think the lines will be so long that early? I've never been to an Apple launch apart from Tiger, Leopard, and Snow Leopard so I don't know how crowded things get at hardware launches.

From my experience, the iPad launch is nothing like the iPhone launch. I don't have a local Apple store, so I picked mine up at Best Buy. On launch day I rolled in at 6 PM, asked for a 32 GB, & they said they had one. According to the man who gave it to me they hadn't sold a ton. I can't speak for Apple stores.

Hope that helps some!

Im not sure if the first iPad launch is a great gage for this launch, the first iPad had huge skepticism as to weather or not it would be a success. I had people at the Best Buy store clapping and patting my back when I bought mine people were flocked around the display units. Now its more in demand people were waiting for a camera on it before the iphone even had a camera. I don't think the lines will be as phenomenal as the iPhone launches but i suspect this years will be a better indicator of future releases.

Threads like this are what make this forum tedious and nauseating. Your question is like a seven year old asking, "what should I wear on my first day of school?" Why do you need to ask people their game plan? YOU EITHER ORDER FROM APPLE.COM, GO TO AN APPLE STORE, OR TRY TO FIND IT AT A THIRD-PARTY RETAILER.

PS; it's not on sale til 5pm. Hope that helps.

From my experience last year, iPad launches are a lot more tame than iPhone launches. I'm waiting a week regardless to make a decision.
