What is your plan for your next phone purchase?

Here is my master plan. I live in the UK so I'll mention UK carriers.

I'm also assuming all contracts for iPhones will be the same price with same benefits.

I'm going to get an iPhone 5 off contract from apple asap, the biggest capacity one.

Then I'll call O2 and get a sim only contract, probably the 12 month one (@£21.50 a month) w/500mbs internet, 600mins and unlimited texts. I can always add on an extra 500mbs if I need it for £4 a month afterwards.

Hopefully with O2 I can just upgrade my current contract (which is much cheaper/older but with O2) to the sim only one, or do something where I can keep my number, though I wouldn't be opposed to getting a new number.

I figured that going sim free would cost me about £50 more (based on current prices) than getting a 32 or £5 less than a 37£ a month 2 year contract with subsidised phone but I think I'd prefer the option of switching carriers more regularly plus it'd be easier to sell it and get the iPhone 6 if I wanted ;).

Long reply but my plan in a nutshell. Bits might not make sense, but it does to me lol.

Im waiting for the Galaxy S2 and Nexus Prime to come out and ill get one of those IF both come to T-Mobile and im sure they are. The GS2 is already said to be called Hercules on T-Mobile and the Nexus always is on T-Mobile.

Ill Probably get the Nexus because it is coming with Ice Cream Sandwich OS but depends on the specs/features.

same thing i do every year...

Year 1. Buy iphone for new contract price $199/299
Year 2. Sell iphone for $450, buy retail price Iphone for $699/799
Year 3. Sell iphone for $450, upgrade contract for $199..Bank $250

Sometimes you can sell them for $500-$600 used, depending on how quick you want to sell them.

Keep repeating process over and over..

After its all said and done I am still on the same money i spent on my first iphone back in 2007 or 08 or whatever year it was they came out.

I do a similar process.

Instead of buying the phone at retail, I do an early upgrade for $399 and I manage to sell my old one for about $350.

I've wanted an iPhone since the beginning, but wasn't willing to go with att. Once Verizon got it, I figured the 5 was close so I waited again. Now with the rumors that sprint may get the iPhone, I'm extatic, because that's who I have now as a wireless carrier, and I love their cust service and unlimited data. I'm currently rocking a palm centro, so I don't care if the iPhone 5 is shaped like a
Banana, I'm getting it day one.

My contract doesn't finish until next June so I'll probably go onto a sim only rolling monthly deal until the iPhone 6 is released.

I have had an HTC Wildfire for around 4-5 months that, while it is a very nice phone, I cannot work with any more due to a few problems, all of which boil down to the fact that I miss having an iPhone :) Before the HTC, I had a 3G which I loved, but it started having battery issues and I was trying and failing to run iOS 4.2 on it sufficiently quickly. So I decided to get a new iPhone and give the HTC to my mum (since she has wanted a phone with internet for ages).

I was going to just settle for the iPhone 4, but since I needed to wait to be paid for the first time (new job), I decided to wait for the 5 to be released. However, after learning that there were potentially going to be TWO new iPhones this year (the 4S and the 5), and after seeing what the 5 is rumoured to look like, I've decided that if the 5 does live up to the speculated design (bigger screen, tapered form factor, larger home button, etc.) I will probably be going for the 4S.

Then I'll call O2 and get a sim only contract, probably the 12 month one (@£21.50 a month) w/500mbs internet, 600mins and unlimited texts.

I will most likely switch my current pay as you go contract to this one as well.

I have IP3GS which is coming to 2 years in December.

At this time (namely because the plan/telephone repayment duty/contract ends) I will look for a new phone.

I am waiting to see what the next IP will be like, but it is most likely that I will try Android, probably with Samsung because of:

a) larger screen and
b) wanting to try something different.

All this is conditional on the next IP being "much of the same" in terms of OS and screen size.

Will see...

You'll be back soon enough, so make sure you don't pay into a contract. I know so many people who "wanted to try something else", only to come back because the interface is laggy, inconsistent, and not intuitive when compared to iOS.

@Tann

u might want to consider GiffGaff for your sim plan as it runs on O2 network
and you can get 600mins, unlimited textx and unlimited internet for £15 per month. or there are cheaper options and no contract

Been using 3Gs for two years now and just finished of paying the subsidies for the phone. I'm still undecided what I'll do next. If the new iPhone has atleast 4'' screen then I guess I maybe could switch to it. Anything less than that is IMO a joke today. 3,5'' was fine in 2009, but not in 2011. If not then it's either some nice new Samsung android, the new Nokia WP7 searay or just keep using the old 3Gs with lowered monthly costs (no more costs for the phone part, only the 10€/month dataplan + 8€ for calls and texts).

Yeah, like a screen that is only 3.5" has gone from hero to zero in the space of 2 years, like it is completely useless these days... Next you'll all be whining about how 4" is too small for a phone screen, and how you want a 5" crossover-tablet despite all laughing at my suggestion of such a device before Samsung came up with theirs.

Mate.. do you have to comment on every post that suggests that the person might switch from iPhone?

Shareholder?

If yes.. I understand...

If not... what is your problem?

:D

Just saying it how it is. Plenty of people migrate from Apple to other phones and then come back again. Yes, I do have shares - inherited them from a relative who bought a few when they were worth around $50.

Let me flip the question...what is your problem? Seeing as though you seem to follow my every move...

Your every move? :) a bit to melodramatic init?

In any case... People exercise their consumer rights... to choose.. to pay for what they want.. Sometime it is not the way the shareholders wish.. but.. Such is life...

No need to piss on the parade.. I am sure if the other OSs prove to be so terrible as you say, we will all come back... if not.. Apple will have to do something else.. if they want to keep making money.

I am in this for myself.. Not Apple.

Cheers.

I'm sure someone will have said this to you before, but have you considered giffgaff?

For £15/month - 400 mins, unltd texts and data (TRULY unlimited data)
For £20/month - 800 mins, unltd texts and data ( " " )

You can keep your number, and it uses O2's network so you'll get the same signal everywhere as you do now.

The 'catch' is that there isn't a callcentre - support is community driven mainly (through a forum - and given that you're posting here I'm going to say you're OK with using the internet :p ) and for anything that can't be solved by another member of giffgaff (e.g. porting your number, lifting the adult content ban) they have 'agents' to solve those problems who you contact through the website.

The forum is fantastic, I think they said the average response was within 3 minutes :p and if you help someone else with their problem then you get money back or whatever it is. And for recommending people to giffgaff too. (That link up there isn't a referrer link though! :) )

No visual voicemail either, but a small price to pay for me.

I'm planning on getting the new iPhone 5 (if the price is somewhat reasonable).
However if i can't afford it I'm most likely buying the HTC Titan. (Release date is similar).

the phone really looks good to me and the screen which is 4.7" just about right.

The only thing however that I'm concerned about is the 'Zune' marketplace.. Have you guys had good experiences with windows phones in the past?

Image for those of you that didn't know about the new HTC yet:

If AT&T moves up upgrade eligibility by 6 months like they have in the past, then I'll probably upgrade. If not, I'll wait. I'm not in any rush--unlike a lot of people here, I couldn't care less about a 4" screen unless it came with a resolution bump (which wouldn't happen). I'd rather see some substantial battery improvements.

I assume Japan will again only get sim-locked iPhones to our "preferred" mobile provider :(
As my iP4 is from my company I expect they will not change it and I will not be able to buy one to switch myself without contract. Therefore I will stay with iP4 for one more year and keep my money together for the iPad 3.
I think next summer my company might give me a new phone when the contract ends

It will def be an iPhone just depends on what the 5 is like. I'm not stupid enough to get the newest one for the sake of getting it.

I have faith in Apple not to disappoint though.

Thanks for the tips! I'll definitely look into it :).

Probably iPhone 5, without contract and either stick with my current T-mob contract (which is great for use in the rest of Europe) or possibly change to GiffGaff PAYG (like my partner & son) which is really good value.

Ok, Im in Ireland and the contracts are crazily overpriced here for the iPhone, so i think im going to order the phone factory unlocked straight from apple as soon as i can, then stick with my o2 pay as you go sim that lets me have free texts to everyone and continue to pay €10 a month for 750mb of internet...

Counted enough change over the past week to pay for a new iPhone so it feels like im not even spending real money on it! Worst it that i think I'm going to have to insure it, and as a person who has never done bills (uni student here) paying between €10 and €15 a month for something that I hope doesn't happen is a bit of a pain, but i cannot risk losing a phone that costs that much!! hahah!!
