Trying to convince my parents to let me buy an iPhone 5 as my first phone. I pay for the phone and I pay my parents for the 2 year contract the day I get it. There is a pretty good chance

First phone? What age are you mate?? Pretty fancy first phone!!

Considering how extended Android is today Apple must deliver a very good phone this year (or two: 4S and 5). If not, most geeks will change to Android or WP7.

iOS is not the only mobile OS that exists. I like the look and feel of iOS but men, I do miss some really nice features of Android like downloading stuff from the web, widgets, live wallpapers, file explorer, sending files over bluetooth, emulators, etc. If you add a nice big screen too then Android is a nice alternative.

iOS has better apps and much more quality games.

I hope Apple gives me a 4' screen so I can stay with iOS but if not...

1. wait for I5 to be officially announced with the real specs not rumored.
2. check my eligibility.
3. if I decide the i5 is worth it then i'll upgrade other wise I still like the I4 just fine.
also if I sell my i4 I hoping to buy a factory unlocked this time so if needed I might wait for it to be available.

If he actually has all the stuff in his signature, I'd guess he's old enough for an iPhone :p

Yep, https://forums.macrumors.com/posts/13232883/ that's my setup (I paid for all of it)

And it's about time I get a phone. When you become a teenager it gets necessary. But if I convince my parents to let me get one I pay for the phone and the contract

I'm 13, but I am an Apple Dev and it is pretty normal to have an iPhone where I am

I'm 17 and I mean it when I tell you well done for having more computers than any adults I know (though not more than myself, of course) :D

Ok.... Smart 13 year old!!! haha.... Im 19 and in uni, and had to literally count change in order to afford a iphone... (Even though I did break my last iPhone (twice) while intoxicated)... Bus still jealous of a thirteen year old getting one!! hahaha!!

I bought a 12 year old a white iPhone 4 earlier this year and until reading this thread I didn't know it wasn't common for them to have one, I thought at the time all kids had iPhones. :D

Saying that though I am quite a rich 20 year old (due to a trust fund) :)

It's not as uncommon as people are making it out to be...

As a young student, I see almost half of the people at school have smartphones nowadays. That's just my area though :/

I have a plan to upgrade from an iPhone 3GS to a HTC Inspire 4G, making some profit in the process.

1) Buy HTC Inspire 4G on eBay for ~$260
2) Buy iPhone 5 on release day for ~$249 (Phone cost + activation fee + taxes)
3) Sell iPhone 5 (sealed box) on eBay for ~$650 (after eBay fees)
4) Sell iPhone 3GS 16GB (mint condition) on eBay for ~$240 (after eBay fees)

After all listed above is done, I would have $381 (very rough estimate) in profit. My main reasons for choosing the Inspire over the iPhone 5 are the profit made, AT&T 4G (fake 4G, only slightly faster than 3G), larger screen, minecraft (release soon), and customizability of Android. Though, when it comes to the stability and complexity of Android, I really despise it.

Does anyone remember what iPhone 4's were selling for on eBay two weeks after release last year? I'm wondering if my $650 estimate is a little too low.

Hopefully by Oct we will know more about the 5 as well as the Prime. I hope the iPhone is worth my while though.
Coming from an OG Droid...I'm tired of Android. Not tired enough to jump ship to anything Apple or Microsoft offers..but tired enough to look around.

I'm hoping for a 4inch screen. 3.7 on my Droid isn't really big. 4 seems perfect..especially if they can keep Retina some how ;)

Had an Inspire... Wasn't really that great. But to each his own!

I'm wondering about the iPhone sale price too. I'm thinking I might pre-order one, get it immediately, then sell it on Craigslist for profit. But I'm not sure Joe much I could get for it. Anyone know what last year was like with the iP4?

Throughout school and college I've seen lots of people with smartphones. Mostly BlackBerries, though, because they usually can't afford iPhones, with the exception of a few. I have both though :p

Here is my master plan. I live in the UK so I'll mention UK carriers.

I'm also assuming all contracts for iPhones will be the same price with same benefits.

I'm going to get an iPhone 5 off contract from apple asap, the biggest capacity one.

Then I'll call O2 and get a sim only contract, probably the 12 month one (@£21.50 a month) w/500mbs internet, 600mins and unlimited texts. I can always add on an extra 500mbs if I need it for £4 a month afterwards.

Hopefully with O2 I can just upgrade my current contract (which is much cheaper/older but with O2) to the sim only one, or do something where I can keep my number, though I wouldn't be opposed to getting a new number.

I figured that going sim free would cost me about £50 more (based on current prices) than getting a 32 or £5 less than a 37£ a month 2 year contract with subsidised phone but I think I'd prefer the option of switching carriers more regularly plus it'd be easier to sell it and get the iPhone 6 if I wanted ;).

Long reply but my plan in a nutshell. Bits might not make sense, but it does to me lol.

I'm on that simplicity contract currently and love it. I got a free £50 gift certificate with Amazon for it, and you get tethering included too and 20 free MMS messages. I love O2's prices, as well as coverage, it's all great.

Will be buying iPhone 5 day 1 off contract and use my simplicity sim in it. (Currently on a 3GS, which i'm selling to my Sister for cheap)

Ouu! That's awesome :) When I first switched to O2 from Orange I was a bit upset (about 30 months ago) and I was considering switching back, but O2 is cheaper and I only wanted Orange because of the Orange Wednesday tbh. But I have a payg sim in another phone that I use for that now lol. I do like how O2 lets you tether using your already paid for data allowances :).

Sadly no free Amazon gift card anymore, and I don't think they give you any picture messages either now, but I wouldn't use those anyway!

Are you going to cut down your existing sim card to microsize or request a new sim?

I was going to wait till the 6 as my contract is not up til next dec

However my girlfriend just got a pay rise

I'm trying to convince her to put money towards the 5 and she can have my 4

Doubt she will agree though lol

I will most likely sell my Nexus S and get the Nexus Prime when it's released.

I've only just bought my wife an iPhone 4 as she wanted one so the likelihood is we'll skip the next iPhone generation.

It's definitely not uncommon. My 2 10 years old and my 8 year old all have 3GS iPhones. I got em for $20 a piece from AT&T. 2 bad that I gotta get 2 of the 3 screens fixed because the girls messed them.

I like iOS but I'm kind of tired of its restrictions. I can't download stuff on the phone, can't send files over bluetooth, can't have a file explorer, can't change the look of the OS unless jailbroken, etc.

Currently running a rooted Nexus-S 4G on Sprint and love it. The upcoming Galaxy S2 for the U.S. carriers has peaked my interest as well. But I am holding out for either the Nexus-Prime or maybe the iPhone5 if it is a major update, hopefully Sprint is getting both of these new phones ?

But I will go to the store mid September and see the Galaxy S2 first hand, I hear they are amazing devices.
