What is your plan for your next phone purchase?

Ok, Im in Ireland and the contracts are crazily overpriced here for the iPhone, so i think im going to order the phone factory unlocked straight from apple as soon as i can, then stick with my o2 pay as you go sim that lets me have free texts to everyone and continue to pay €10 a month for 750mb of internet...

Counted enough change over the past week to pay for a new iPhone so it feels like im not even spending real money on it! Worst it that i think I'm going to have to insure it, and as a person who has never done bills (uni student here) paying between €10 and €15 a month for something that I hope doesn't happen is a bit of a pain, but i cannot risk losing a phone that costs that much!! hahah!!

Ahh I am a uni student too and I'm definitely going to get insurance! Imagine if you broke it or it was stolen! Especially if you buy it from apple, that's potentially £600 gone! :/

I know, absolutely terrified of that happening.... Especially since there is a massive business for stolen iPhones in Dublin! But just checked my bank, €10 a month, and I'd also be covered in case of accidental death! lol!!! hahaha

2012 - BlackBerry QNX phone

I like the PlayBook, so my next phone will be a QNX phone. Maybe the Colt or one with QNX done in the BB 9000/9900 form factor. iPhone 4 will be an iPod touch and be used as a portable media player and casual gaming device that I plan to keep for years. My first tablet will be a PlayBook, my next handheld will be a Vita, and next phone will be a BlackBerry. I know RIM isn't popular like they used to, but I want to go back to something old school and great at voice quality. iOS has gotten redundant.

Sounds like somebody who is never happy and can't make their mind up.

Plan on buying the iPhone 5 as soon as it's out no matter what? Switching to Android or something? I'm interested to see what you guys plan on doing, what your needs are, ect. Basically, just tell everyone your thoughts. Maybe we'll hep you brainstorm? ;)

I'll start...
I currently have an iPhone 4.
I don't like tablets because they just run phone OSs and they aren't as mobile as a phone, so my next best thing is a large phone. (I recently sold my iPad 2 and don't regret it :p) Samsung just announced the Note, which seems perfect for me, but I'm still not sure what I'm going after next... My 3 choices are; the Nexus Prime, iPhone 5, and Galaxy Note. If I want a true tablet replacement, I'm going to need a high screen resolution. There were rumors the Prime would have a resolution just like the Note, and if that's so, then I'd more than likely get the Prime. I really don't like putting my trust in non-Nexus Android phones for updates.

BUT some of the iClouds features would be really handy to me... Unless the iPhone 5 turns out to be some insanely amazing device, I might just buy an iPhone 5 with my available upgrade (AT&T), then sell it immediately for a higher price. This would allow me to buy a Note (out of country) or the Nexus Prime (off-contract. if it has AT&T's 3G/4G bands) and I could keep my iPhone 4 just incase I ever need the iCloud (mostly needed for documents for school and such) I have a tethering plan, so it'd be pretty easy when needed.

And about selling the iPhone 5... Does anyone know how plausible it is to pre-order it, get it immediately, then sell it for MORE than it would cost off-contract? (through Craigslist) Are there enough people willing to pay more for it to get it sooner? Most stores will be out of the phone for awhile after release.

---

Alright, so those are my thoughts (sorry that they were pretty long) What are yours? What do you think you might do, and why? What features are you relying on?

According to recent news, it was said that a Taiwan based notebook maker would be receiving an order of 15 million iPhone 5 units from Apple because so much demand... So I am also waiting for it anxiouslly because of it's extra ordinary features and will buy on releasing..........!

I have never heard of the galaxy note until this thread and after watching the video

iPhone5 better be much much better than a spec update. With Apple only releasing 1 phone a year vs Android about 6 a month, well Android is catching up pretty fast and by the time of the iPhone6 it may have surpassed it by far.

Android is an OS, not a phone...yes?

When the iPhone 5 comes out, I'll wait a month or two for any problems to be fixed, then I'll sell my iPhone 4 on eBay and upgrade.

If there are issues, Apple usually is one of the few companies where you can walk into their stores and swap it out since it will be a valid reason.

iPhone 5. I plan on preordering online when I can and getting it sim free for £500 and then hoping I get it on release date and I'm happy. Then I'll see if I like it or not and if I don't I'll sell and get a Nexus Prime or something.

I live in the UK so I'll mention UK carriers.
I'm going to get an iPhone 5 off contract from apple asap, the biggest capacity one.
Then I'll call O2 and get a sim only contract, probably the 12 month one (@£21.50 a month) w/500mbs internet, 600mins and unlimited texts. I can always add on an extra 500mbs if I need it for £4 a month afterwards.

People, take note of this exceptional plan pricing (convert to US$). Does anyone wonder why we pay the ridiculous prices we do here in the U.S.?

Your tariffs in the USA are an absolute joke compared to most other countries. I guess the main reason was before this year only one network provided the iPhone in the USA so I suppose they could charge what they wanted really whereas in the UK there's lots of competition for practically every phone having 5 big networks here.

Yeah, like a screen that is only 3.5" has gone from hero to zero in the space of 2 years, like it is completely useless these days... Next you'll all be whining about how 4" is too small for a phone screen, and how you want a 5" crossover-tablet despite all laughing at my suggestion of such a device before Samsung came up with theirs.

It's not bad but like I said it was good in 2009, but a bit lacking IMO now in 2011. If I'm buying a 500-600€ phone today, I want it to have brand new HW, including the phyical screen size, not something that was good two yeas ago. Maybe you shouldn't take it as a personal insult that iPhone ain't the only possible choice for many existing iPhone users.

Btw that samsung Note isn't anything new. Acer had similar sized tabletphone already in stores for a while now.

OZ plans are usually $49, $59, $79, $99 etc.

The higher the plan, better the phone and, of course, more juice...

Although not all providers are the same... Some have better service, some worse... both comms and customer service..

With some, one gets to talk to a human being (customer service) quickly. With the others one spends 45min swearing one's head off "talking" to that automated crap which never gives the option one actually needs...

I guess its the same everywhere... We do get ripped off comparing with some other countries... but.. it happens...

I know, I've done that before, but I'd rather not have to. I prefer to let the early adapters beta test products for me before I buy :D

Because your networks suck. I get an even better deal than the one quoted - pay as you go (so no contract at all), £10 (about $16) a month for 250 minutes, unlimited texts and unlimited internet (no fair use). YEEEEAAAHHHHHHH :p

Thanks for the tips! I'll definitely look into it :).

Sorry! I missed the other post. (I said someone else would mention it :p)

I know, I've been absolutely appalled at how much you guys spend on the actual contract over there. :S And then you all talk about upgrade fees and exit fees and all sorts of stuff.

And then you guys talk about just giving away your phones when you upgrade... over here I think they have much higher resale value because they can be unlocked or prepaid or whatever you fancy. I bought mine a few months ago for £380 ($610). New, it's £510 ($820).

We do, as Certinfy said, have several phone networks, and a few people have mentioned buying their iPhone factory unlocked and then going prepaid (which can make a huge difference in the monthly cost for us too).

I own my iPhone 4 outright and I'm on the same plan as 0dev :D

:p. I looked at them and they're good! Though I think I'll stick with O2 because with O2 I remembered I get £5 off my home broadband a month. Also there are conflicting opinions as wether you can roam on giffgaff and tethering is doesn't seem to be supported.

Now to tell other people about this new and exciting network :p.

Yup. Though to be fair I think the only thing you guys pay significantly more for is a phone contract. Everything else is really cheap :p. At least when I was there last week thinking in my head how much certain things would be here in the UK lol.

Bought a cheap, used iPhone 3G with a cracked screen from a classmate in May this year. DIY'd the digitizer, but later noticed the WiFi wasn't functional. Apple replaced it with a new/refurb 3G. Planning to get the iPhone 5 on launch day.

Another thing about the US is all the networks work in different bands, so if you get a phone from one network, it won't work on others even after it's unlocked, especially if you get a CDMA one. What a piss take, eh?

The resale value here is much better indeed. Even without a contract giving me an upgrade deal I can always upgrade for about £50 because my old iPhone still has a high value as long as I upgrade every year.

Buying the phone outright is usually cheaper than a contract, too. It's a common misconception that it's more expensive. It's more to pay upfront, yes, but in the long term, and when you factor in the resale value, it's much better.

What's even better about the network I'm on is they pay me if I help on their forums! So I actually profit from them while getting unlimited texts and data with 250 minutes thrown in on my iPhone 4!

Damn I love my phone deal :D

Hah! You'll really hate GiffGaff then! For example, UKL10 per month (US$16) gives you 250 UK minutes, unlimited UK texts and (really!) unlimited mobile Internet!

Yep, exactly what I'm on. And you pay nothing (effectively) if you help people on the forums (essentially the same thing you do on here for free), and if you do it a lot, you can profit like I do. And, in fact, if you get a lot of people ordering SIM cards from your affiliate link, you make a fiver a pop if they get activated. Someone even managed to make a few grand in a month from handing loads out at markets and such.

You're talking to a giffgaff convert already ;) I don't really help on the forums, I have recommended a few friends though. I love it too :D and I totally agree on the upgrading thing too - it's not the upfront cost that you're paying, it's the depreciation of the phone. So in theory it will cost me approximately the same to upgrade every year as it will to upgrade once every two years.

I seriously hope giffgaff keeps going because I love the sweet, sweet goodness of that £10 goodybag. :D

giffgaff is honestly the best thing I've discovered phone-wise. No joke there. It really is amazing.

I hope they keep going too! They're doing BlackBerry Services now, which has been in demand for ages, so they'll get a lot of new customers from that, I'm sure. It'll help me convert more of my friends too :D

And yes, that £10 goodybag, I mean, do you need much more in your life? (alright, that's maybe going a bit far, but you know) :p

Most likely wait until the replacement for the xperia arc is out, see what it's like then decide if I need to upgrade.

Mind you that nokia sea ray looks interesting

I'm not entirely decided yet. I have a 3GS, so anything would be an upgrade, but if the iPhone 5 still has that puny 3.5" screen, as much as I love the iPhone, I'll move on to something modern with a 4/4.3" screen.

You'd think Apple would get with the program, but then... no one asked for the dime sized iPod Nano either.

Gonna be an interesting next several weeks.

iphone 5/samsung note hmmm im waiting....ill see what iphone 5 is all about first..but that NOTE is a nice for a change :D but i spent lots of money on the apple app store so going android will have to kind of spend money again for apps:(

does anyone know if you can re down load a app you bought on the apple app store on a android and not pay for it again? are some devs doing that? wondering:confused:
