We had a bagless Kenmore and it was excellent for the carpets, and no emissions, until you had to dump all the crap inside, the design was poor for not getting you hands dirty when dumping it. The bagged version might had been a good one. Then it broke qnd we had to get a new one.

Anyway the dyson is pure hype and extra price for not so good emissions (at least when I did my research last year). We decided for this one:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B001PB8EEM/ref=mp_s_a_3?qid=1298327533&sr=8-3

Almost as good as the Kenmore for the vacuum suction power it has, it is the lightest one out there and the bag is big enough to not worry about it for a good amount of time. Also comes with the portable one for those tight places.
We are very happy with its performance.

At the end it is a matter of what you need. I am allergic to dust and dust mites and the vacuum is great to getting rid of it.

The above comment on "Dyson Hype" has highlighted my problem. I've got a couple threads running across a few different forums, as well as emails and texts to family members and friends, for advice on their favorite vacuum. When I mention Dyson I get one of two replies. I love them or hate them. No middle. Even the reviews I've read, one gives Dyson a glowing 5 star review and then a magazine like Consumer Reports lists them as overpriced and unimpressive.

You have try the vacuum before pulling the trigger, then you will know what is best for you. I do not hate the dyson, I was intrigued by them and when I tested it at the store it was too much money for an old design that was not as light nor as good as I expected it to be.
Bottom-line in my case it was not a "Mac Experience", I did have a better experience with the one I bought.

We have an Oreck XL. Best vacuum I have ever owned... We have four animals (2 dogs, 2 cats) in our house and they shed a lot. Our old bagless Bissell had a heck of a time picking up all of the hair.

The Oreck, on the other hand, picks everything up in one quick pass. Awesome vac.

I have the same vacuum and its great. Carpet was never clean before like the Oreck keeps it these days...

We also have Dyson, Fiancee's grandparents gave it to us. Works great, we love it. But, we would have never spent that much on one...

Oreck XL21. We would have gotten the Dyson upright except that from our in store testing at Sears we did we found that it weighs a ton a half compared to the Oreck and the Dyson was also really hard to push. Not good for people with arthritis like my Mom.

My parents have Kirby. It's powered drive, also weighs as much as a small VW. They have had it for 15+ years, I was a kid when they got it and was amazed by the power drive. I had so many great ideas of how to play with it, but was forbidden to touch it...

I've got a few vacuums for various parts of the house:

Downstairs:
Kirby Classic III
Runs like a tank, built like a tank. 35+ years old and still works like the day it was new:

Upstairs:
Electrolux LX II upright. This thing had a 15 year motor warranty. Works greatt!

For the Stairs:
Electrolux Little Lux mini vac

For the garage:
1956 Electrolux Model Automatic E, with "gasp" cord winder and cloth/vinyl house. Still purrs and has just as much suction as the newer electrolux.
This thing is over 50 years old!

Dyson, the ball one. It sucks awesomely.

The Kirby sleeps in the garage.

Kenmore. I'd like to own a Dyson one day though. Those things look awesome.

I like that Dyson hand drier, I think it's called the Airblade. It looks like something Apple would design. And I never knew that I would actually like a hand drier...

Henry. It works well and it looks happy.

What more could you ask for? :)

Filter Queen Magestic 360.

I bought my first FQ Magestic in 1989 and it's still looking and working like new for a friend. I liked the 360's attachemets better and upgraded a few years ago.

Like the Rainbow, Filter Queen has been around a long time and are expensive to buy but are cheap in the long run. The old ones (pre-2002) were all steel but the newer ones like mine have a lighter platic canister with a steel top.

Dyson like to brag about bagless cyclonic HEPA filtration but FQ has had this since the late 1940's and has unbeatable suction and durability. The filter cones are cheap, the optional HEPA insert is reasonablly priced and it's still made in Ohio.

The only downside is that "bagless" means kinda messy to empty. No problem, just take it outside to empty.

Have Fun,
Keri

Miele Red Star. Fantastic build quality, excellent HEPA filtration, quiet operation. Not cheap, but well worth it.

Miele!

I've had a Miele S7580 for a bit over a year now, and it's by far the best vacuum I've ever used--and that includes Hoover, Oreck, Dyson, and several others.

It's expensive, but I expect it to last 20 years--and from the sounds of the motors (yes, 2 motors--one for the suction and one for the brush), it uses extremely high quality bushings which makes using it very smooth and quiet.

I'm in the minority here, but the Dyson I've got has been disappointing. I think it actually has less suction than the Dirt Devil it replaced.

I like the design and features of the Dyson, but really, I have to go over stuff two or three times slowly until it gets picked up. And yes, the beater bars are turning, and there are no clogs in the system.

It was a little better when new, but not much.

I've actually had 2 of those walmart bissels - this one?

Honestly? For $40-50 those are pretty damn good vacuums. The $40 Eureka walmart sells is garbage (I have one.. every time I vacuum with it I have to take the hose off and clean the u-joint out). Familiar.. the last Eureka I had a few years back had the same damn problem, only it'd clog in the joint where the hose went up and you plugged the wand in.

I've never owned a Dyson, and at $400 a vacuum i probably never will. I usually get 3+ years out of a vacuum cleaner and that would be 30+ years of cheap vacuums to 1 dyson. xD

I'll also second the Dirt Devils - those things have fantastic amounts of suction. Sometimes too much? I've had one of those fail pretty spectacularly (it started sounding like a REALLY LOUD fog horn XD)

Hrmm.. we once had an electrolux :D It lasted about 15 years. OTOH, it went to the shop about 3 or 4 times I think?
