I'm in the minority here, but the Dyson I've got has been disappointing. I think it actually has less suction than the Dirt Devil it replaced.

Blasphemy! Kill the non-believer! :D

I agree to an extent, I do find our Dyson very good. However, we have wooden flooring throughout so massive suction isn't really that important. Instead I like the Dyson as it is light, compact and well made.

I have this Electrolux vacuum, except mine is gray. We still have more than 2000 bags for it! :D We probably won't get through all of those anymore since we just use this $6 handheld vacuum we bought from Brandsmart USA more often now.

I find the proverbial garden-hose manned by Cheryl Baker on one end and Sam Fox the other works a treat- its not outer space but ultra-high quality nonetheless. Bless 'em.

I saw a Dyson in action a few weeks ago and was surprised how noisy they are. It's not even a smooth "whiirrr" it's more of a rough gurgly WhARRARR noise.

I guess the whole "no loss of suction!" thing means no mufflers

I have 2 Oreck's that I love because of their simplicity and decent performance. A Kenmore canister for doing stairs and tight areas, and I have 2 Rigid 14 gallon shop vacs for cleaning my shop.

I have a SEBO Automatic X4

They're more expensive than Dyson (by a fair amount), but when I was doing my research all the reviews seemed better.

It's a conventional style of upright vacuum - but with a lot of attention paid to the engineering, the filters and the placement of the brush. It's my understanding that for carpeted areas, the dust-removal is really enhanced by a powered brush, and the only way to get that is with an upright style vacuum. The SEBO senses the carpet thickness and automatically adjusts brush height while you're vacuuming.

I've had it for a few years and it's certainly the best vacuum I've ever used.

I had a 10y/o Dyson with a power head and it rocked.

When that died we replaced it with a Dyson with a "turbo" head, and it's a useless POS.

I wish I could get one in the states.

Have you used a Henry? I had one and I thought it was the worst vacuum I'd ever used. It would pick up larger items (sometimes) but it totally failed with smaller particles. I have a red rug that is inexplicably fabulous at collecting dust. To get this annoying rug clean with the Henry I would have to tediously take the hose to it inch by inch. It took about 20 minutes, just to clean a rug! Useless POS.

That same rug will clean up in 30 seconds with my Dyson. I actually think the Dyson is rather mediocre (because it does sporadically lose suction) but it's a hell of a lot better than that Henry ever was. A lot of people seem to like their Henry/Hetty hoovers but I can't share in that sentiment.

Dyson DC 35 Multi-Floor is an amazing little gizmo. Its rechargeable, and allows you to get into the little areas and steps that my other Dyson DC 25 Animal just can't get into that well.

I know Dyson's are a love-hate kind of thing, but coming from a crappy Kenmore that lasted about 3 years before dying... we are in vacuum heaven.

I inherited a kirby from my mom. She paid over $2k for it. I could not understand why it cost so much. Now I know--it SUCKS. Best vacuum I have ever had. It is heavy to lift but drives itself.

Dysons everywhere. The original handheld (don't know the number), a DC11 and a DC23 Motorhead. Love all of them, except that the cord is a tad too short.
