Just don't expect too much from the film...it's silliness incarnate. If you go in with that attitude, I think you will just enjoy a chuckle or three at the self mocking satire.:D

I will be sure to go into it with the proper attitude and expectations!

In response to qualms about animated film flops, I'm going to make a statement that might rub the wrong way.

I watched Wall-E this weekend. I had high expectations, as I've heard how revolutionary it was. But my wife and I could not have been happier when it was over; we both were strongly disappointed. Anyone want to comment on why this was so highly rated?

What Movie Are You Watching?

I love Wall-E. If I had to rank all of the animated movies I've seen, this one would be somewhere at the top of the list. The visual aspect of the film is stunning, so is the technical. Astounding artwork, beautiful scenes, music. Love the minimum dialogue. I thought it was a fantastic love story. I personally think it deserved the praise it got. I think you should see it again. I don't know, you might appreciate it the second time around :)

Really? The perpetual "EEEEEVAAAAAA" "WALLLLEEEEE" was annoying... and the plotline of the floating starship was so fake and condescending. I think that the movie was very well done, but we were so over it by the time it was over. I'm not sure if I am willing to give it another shot...

There are a lot of critics who loved the movie but thought it was too overrated.

-----------

You know what, I'm very interested to know what children think of it. I have an 11 year old sister. I might let her watch it out of curiosity.

Yeah, it did get really good reviews, and I understand that. I think half of the problem was that because of the reviews, I was expecting something utterly wonderful, and it naturally fell short.

Yeah, please report back what your 11 year old thought. I mean, it is a kid's movie....

I watched Godzilla King of the monsters last night, the original Americanized Japense monster movie on TCM.

As I'm sure most of you know the original Japanese movie didn't star Raymond Burr, but they added scenes into it and changed the plot a bit to make it more acceptable to the American audience.

I hadn't seen this movie since I was a kid watching "Creature Double Feature" on Saturday mornings.

Okay, finally have some time to watch it from the recording the other day.

Godzilla, King of the Monsters! (1956)

Wall-E gets high praise from me. Most disturbing was a future of obese citizens which is not so futuristic... :p

Last night, I watched "Prisoners", starring Hugh Jackman, et al. It was very well done, and possibly Jackman's best performance. The film captured some terrific emotion, despite it's gritty content. I would recommend this to anyone, but not those who are squeamish; it's a little hard to handle at some points, especially with Paul Dano's character.

I think the most disturbing part was that the obese people had been doing the same activities for about 700 years... the lack of progress was the most horrible aspect, seeing as to how progress today is the most exciting aspect of our lives; what makes our (the past 100 years, and foreseeable future) time period memorable, and what we will be remembered for.

That did not appear to be the focus of the story. :)

Looks interesting, so I've added it to my watch list. Is it just mindless violence and gore or is there something of substance as well?

No not really. It does have some substance but I don't know what is it. :D

But it doesn't have violence per se. I wouldn't characterize the movie as being violent. More like strange imagery that involves a lot of blood (from time to time).

I think Wall-e was ok. I never felt the need to watch it again though. Have you seen Frankenweenie? Now that is a good animation movie with a very unique look that I actually enjoyed.

I was considering buying this after hearing positive reviews, even though I thought the trailer was so-so... Maybe I'll just rent it.

I always advise my wife that for movies that are unknown stories it's better to rent before buying. Maybe you'll find it worthy for purchase... :D

The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014)- Ehh, to farcical for my tastes.

Actually, this is a movie I am looking forward to having an opportunity of seeing; perhaps, farcical, but it has a great cast and an interesting historical backdrop. Unfortunately, the opportunity hasn't arisen yet; hopefully, when I'm next home, I might get a chance to see it.

I watched National Treasure. I really like this movie.

Me too. :)

As historical a backdrop as a fictional country can have? ;) It's too stylized and cartoon-like for me. It is not grounded in reality (not always bad), but I won't hold it against you if you like it. :)

Thank you.

As a historian by profession, I always enjoy the treatment of (fictitious) history in fictional countries if it is done well, and stylised doesn't bother me if they can carry it off; sometimes, - if you have an intelligent script, sharp satire, and a very good cast, you can make a few interesting points about history from an unusual - and often, very well informed - perspective.

Actually, I'm a lot less forgiving of those movies which mess with - or telescope - real history and try to pass it off as 'authentic', or as a necessary artistic, or narrative, compromise. That is something I find unforgivable, and will always call them out on. In truth, I have long found European movies to be a lot more nuanced in how history is treated, - whether fictitious or not - than many movies which hail from the US.

I don't have any real background for the historical parts, but the computer things they do have me cringing and screaming "not possible in any way...". But, I still liked these movies. They are fun caricatures of possibility, but really fun to watch.

On a separate note, we've had Home Alone on several times this week. I had no interest in it when it came out, and less now. It introduced the Culkin kid right before fame ruined him, and was terrible to boot. The characters are all horrid, and the situations are absolutely miserable. It is a ridiculous, pathetic waste. I've wandered away every time it was on, and will continue to do so.

My kids think it's funny. There's no accounting for taste.

I watched "Out Of The Furnace" two nights ago, and "Nebraska" last night.

Both were very good, and I shant comment for long, but Out of the Furnace was terrific fun with Woody, and Nebraska, well, Bruce Dern is a wonderful actor. I recommend both!
