House of Clocks by Fulci.

Bit of a missed opportunity for me, starts great with a Balzac quote, nice score and an awesome Italian villa + park but unfortunately couldn't keep it going strong. For a low budget tv movie I'd rate it along the 5-6/10 mark.

You're a braver Fulci watcher than me twietee. I've heard that wasn't very good. Hope everything else you watch is better.

lol

There are still some left on the list (Silversaddle for example) but yes, knowing that I've seen the best already isn't really that encouraging...House of Clocks is just a mediocre b-movie but still got some left of that Fulci touch. I have to check if I got the original though - was quite tired when I saw it and watched the abysmal English dub. Didn't help it's case either.

About the rest, dunno, depends on the eye of the beholder (lol) but just rewatched the True Detective series, and will do so many times more - absolutely loving it - while trying to finish my Japanese noir flics from the 70s - Tokyo
Drifter, Branded To Kill, Pistol Opera etc pp. But the enjoyment of watching complicated Japanes movies with English subs really depends on the mood - hard to keep proper attention after work. Quite stylish as far as I can tell (before falling asleep that is ;)).

Funny that you've mentioned Heroin Busters lately - got that one, please don't ask me why, on my watchlist some years ago but totally forgot about it. Seems rather hard to get so I'll have to keep an eye on it.

Hope you're doing fine, Kazmac. Just received my new rMbp and can't wait to get finally home :D

Glad you're enjoying True Detective all over again (and again.) And those Japanese noir films. Fulci, I watched a couple of westerns, his gialli and his zombie stuff and stopped after House by the Cemetery. As I said you're a super trooper sir!

Speaking of Japan, I had the original King Video dvd release of Heroin Busters (while my multi-region dvd player still worked) eons ago. And despite no English, I wound up loving that movie. I think there was a German release a few years ago, but the American one from Blue Underground should still be available (I am not holding my breath for a blu ray version from them, but if they do that, I hope they fix the soundtrack skip in the beginning.) And it's on iTunes here (as are many of Blue Underground's films.)

Enjoy your new rMBP. Congratulations!!! I am good and I know you are :)

I'll be watching a lot of film rentals the week of October 7th:

Chef, Edge of Tomorrow, Automata more?, and one purchase sight unseen that week: Joe Carnahan's Stretch.

I saw the Maze Runner today and really enjoyed it. I was prepared for the typical teen movie, but was very surprised with how much it pulls you into the story. It had a Lord of the Flies feel to it and kept me interested with the overall mystery of the plot. No cheesy teen romance at all, which in my opinion is a big plus. :)

Watched SkyFall last night. Love that movie!

Rentals:

Chef (2014):

A chef who loses his restaurant job starts up a food truck in an effort to reclaim his creative promise, while piecing back together his estranged family.

A nice little movie about a restaurant chef who is tired of making the same menu at his employer. After being fired, he sets up a food truck and his life (both personal and creative) improves significantly. Follow your dream and you might make it. A lot of the guest stars were distracting (and took me out of the movie), but a good rental. I liked it.

Space Station 76 (2014):

A dramedy winking at all those 1970s Sci Fi shows (especially Space 1999)

The 70s thinking of men and women is played out in obvious fashion. Career girl Lt. Marlow (Liv Tyler) joins the crew and families on Omega 76 while all kinds of relationship havoc ensue (cheating, flirting and a lot of lies.) Like Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, the robot (Dr. Bot the psychoanalyst) provides the only comedy moments in an otherwise heavy-handed character study.

I guess I will be waiting awhile to see Star Trek Into Darkness, iTunes does not offer it for rental yet and I'm not a Netflix or Amazon streamer.

I've liked this movie since I was a kid. The tension of how to deal with a traitor hit me hard.

War of the Worlds. Is this Spilbergs darkest film. As a father I find it quite disturbing. I can relate to the overwhelming desire he has to protect his kids. It kind of makes you think. What would you do?

An excellent update to the original, that gives a very unsettled feeling of a breakdown of society in light of an alien invasion.

Caught Joe Carnahan's take on the A-Team last night. I really wasn't a fan of the show, but I liked Liam Neeson in George Peppard's role.

I like Carnahan as a writer/director (can 't wait to see Stretch this coming Tuesday.) He's definitely not for everyone, but the guy does have a unique eye and a very playful, black and corny sense of humor.

Insane in a good way or a bad way?

Well I guess that depends...

I'm referring to the way gender roles and relationships are represented. Both the characters and writers regularly insult Doris Day's character's intelligence. She's treated more like a dumb pet than anything else.

But that's all par for the course for those silly comedies from that time.

I found it insane but also fascinating, and it was the perfect mindless movie to pass a long plane ride. I'm collecting a few more for my next trip!

I had a plane ride earlier in the week and watched Send Me No Flowers (1964), which was...just completely insane.

I grew up with these movies and still love them, the quintessential 60s comedies. My favorite of the Rock Hudson-Doris Day films is Lover Come Back about competition between 2 advertising execs and a product being advertised, but not yet invented VIP. :)

just remembered that everyone should have seen Baraka (1992) and Samsara (2011) at least once in their life. enjoy! :)
