Prometheus Spoilers

Interesting that you view the Captain, (Janek- Idris Elba) as pathetic. Are we talking about the same character? He struck me initially as "I'm just doing my job", but he was moral and courageous, volunteering to make the ultimate sacrifice for the human race, as compared to self serving (perceived) Meridith Vickers.

Yes, that's about what message the character should transport I'd guess - but he was very poorly written and shown/portraited imho. The 180° from "I don't care" to "Who's with me on self-sacrifice? Yay!" was poorly explained if at all. To me that is of course. I like Idris but this wasn't something I'll remember him dearly for. This heroic gesture (cowboy stance, with some one-liner while facing death) was pathetic imo. And that scene when he wanted to hit on Charlize...naw.

As far as comical characters, I recently said, we can hold the director responsible for introducing these characters into the story...

... just like in the original Alien when several crew members bickered over pay.

And again, off with the helmets, but in this movie, as with the original Alien, it made no difference, but seems basically wrong when it comes to avoiding alien contamination in general. :)

Yea, that helmet scene got people upset lol. Not me though. In the end it had just too many flaws to be considered something groundbreaking - like the first Alien. Like I said, the original crew was comical but still believable, the Prometheus one was mostly annoying lol. I liked Charlize, Fassbender and that's about it. The rest seemed forced in it's conflicts/behavior. But hey, I still liked it. :D

The only minor "off putting" scene in Alien still makes for an awesome gif, so that's that. :D

Characters have been known to change their attitudes in movies. He started lackluster, but the situation finally got his attention and motivated him. Out in space for prolonged periods, hitting on a hot, but obnoxious chick is beyond the realm? ;) :)

I missed that scene, lol. :p

I don't mind the "that" it happened but "how" it was presented and developed. Much too much cardboard for my taste.

Samo.

Missed the table-dance scene? your loss...:D

The "Alien" movies after Aliens (Alien 3 and Alien Ressurection) were unworthy. I feared it going in and fears were justified especially AR. I Did not care for the Aliens vs Predator movies either, but loved Predator.

I used the term "bad android", but in reality, they do what they have been programmed/told to do by those who have authority over them. Although David, the android in Prometheus was bad, it became clear he had no moral framework that guided him. Some Aliens fans hated Prometheus, but more for the probable reason, it did not follow the early films formula. I thought it was an outstanding piece of cinematic art furthering the Aliens story.

Good points about the 'bad android' (being programmed by the corporate overlords.

I haven't seen Prometheus, I'll wait until it's on the tv.

But Alien 3 and Resurrection (not to mention AvP) = flush.

Not sure about the latter but I liked Prometheus pretty much regardless. Especially that android/Fassbender was good. The scene where he impersonates/mimics the actor (Peter O' Toole) of Lawrence From Arabia was a good one.

The only real problem I had with Prometheus was that the crew was much too comical in a not so good way (unbelievable up to being cheesy - as opposed to the Nostradamus crew in Alien). The pathetic captain (Stringer Bell, forgot his name) was too much for me.

Think it was that scene from LoArabia:

Thanks for the posting of the clip and your thoughts twietee.

Okay, I've been spoiled and I do not mind > I had to comment on this only because the above moment in Spaceballs still makes me crack up.

I'll be curious of what you think of Prometheus. No hard feelings if you hate it. :)

The Battery, A-

Ultra low-budget zombie flick (purportedly $6K), though like many modern zombie stories, the Zs actually take a back seat. Outstanding, and I got a chance to chat with the writer/director/star, really interesting insight into the film industry. I think people will know in advance if they’ll like this, if that makes sense :)

The Signal, B

Pretty solid Sci-fi with Larry Fishburne, a touch “emo-esque”, but some great visual execution (very surprising considering it’s a bit “down budget”), some fun grand sci-fi tropes - I’d say, it’s a mix of [movies] X, Y and Z except that would give up too much.

Neighbors, A-

Funny stuff, there’s kind of two movies going on here: a frat comedy and a bit of a riff on the “getting older with kids” movie like ‘This is 40’. They mix the two together nicely, there’s some absurd stuff that’s very funny, some situational things that are funny if you “get it”, nice work all around. If you’re a fan of Judd Apatow type flicks, you’ll like it (in fact, I thought it was funnier than some of his more popular movies).

Chef, B-

A little predictable as expected , some very funny stuff (the internet jokes work really well), a few fun cameos, I generally dig on the Jon Favreau “style” and if you know his work, it’s more of the same (good/bad depending on your perspective). A bit of a foodie, so I liked many of the cooking details.

Just watched Gone Girl. Awesome movie, and it had a distinctive Fincher feel. I've always thought Ben Afflecks acting has sort of a detached quality, but it works really well in this movie. Great soundtrack as well, overall just an excellent film.

Watching Titanic. Bit of a chick flick, but I've never actually seen it.

I don't consider Titanic as being a chick flick film.

Annabelle was pretty good. Above average for some horror movies but still nothing to write home about. But, the people did their homework on demons, they did a GREAT job with the demon in this movie.

I love horror movies. Will be watching this one in a few hours.

So, what would you consider a chick flick? There were mostly women going to see it over and over again in the theaters (I'll concede there were some men, too).

This past week I saw the ending of The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. I read the short story years ago, and I've seen the Danny Kaye version, and this was mostly different. I started watching at the beginning, and couldn't get past the new boss character. So, I wandered away until he goes searching for the negative. At that point, it was a visually interesting movie about a guy finding himself, with an enjoyable soundtrack. Nothing like the book, though.

What Movie Are You Watching?

Movies like Mean Girls and Legally Blonde :)

I think I might make a trip to the movie theater to see that one before too long. It looks pretty good, i suppose.

...

The House with Laughing Windows - Hands down one of the most unnerving and scary gialli/Italian horror films period. Despite several viewings, I found myself very creeped out by tonight's revisit. In 1950s rural Italy, young painter Stefano is asked to restore a church painting depicting St. Sebastian's death and uncovers some very nasty truths about the painter of the piece and the town. This is up there with What Have you Done to Solange? as one of the great non-Argento gialli.

Those probably are, too, but I haven't seen them, so can't say for certain.

Yesterday I finally got to see Guardians of the Galaxy. I'm definitely glad I pushed to see it in a theater. While not "the best movie ever", I thoroughly enjoyed it.

So I just saw Annabelle over the weekend. It was a pretty good flick for technical scares. I liked it, but I felt like I've seen that trope before

Movies I've watched recently

Real Genius (again): Almost 30 years since I watched it. Fun Goofy Flick.

Million Ways to Die in the West: Should have been an extended Family Guy Ep. Disjointed with very few funny parts.

GI Joe Retaliation: Tripe.

Transformers 4: Utter tripe. Though I did enjoy the 3rd one on the big screen for the scale and ridiculousness of it all.

Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey (again): Bummer Dude. Totally vibed me out after the excellent first one.

End of Watch: Interesting cop drama that almost plays like a documentary. Weak ending and the story is thin but still interesting to watch.

North Dallas Forty (again): Excellent American Football movie in the same vein as Slapshot. Worth watching if you haven't seen it.

Guardians of the galaxy: Fun movie. Not quite as good as I had hoped but I saw it long after release and expectations were high. Love the director though and what he brought to the flick. Just wish he's pulled the camera back sometimes and let us take the movie in.

The Yellow Rolls-Royce (1964)
Three stories about the lives and loves of those who own a certain yellow Rolls-Royce: **First purchased by the Marquess of Frinton for his wife as a belated anniversary present, the Marchiness finds her own use for the vehicle - one which prompts her husband to sell the car in disgust. **Gangster Paolo Maltese's moll, Mae, thinks the Rolls is a "classy" car in which to tour Paolo's home town in Italy. When Paolo is called away to the States to finish some "business", a bored Mae takes the Rolls on a spin through the country, enjoying both the sights and the handsome Italian photographer who crosses her path. **By the outbreak of World War II, the car has come into the possession of socialite Gerda Millet. While on her way to visit Yugoslavian royalty, Gerda and the Rolls become (at first) unwitting and then (eventually) most willing participants in the Yugoslavian fight.
