Caught the Dirty Dozen again. Always guess the wrong cast members deaths!

Finally saw Thor The Dark World. On the plus side, Thor and Kurse, Heimdall, Frigga, Sif and Volstagg. On the negative side: forced humor, weak lead villain, Jane (hope Portman is only signed for 2 films) and Loki. Still, I look forward to Thor: Ragnarok. It has to be better than the first two.

I liked the first Thor greatly, but the second one was a huge disappointment for me.

Just watched The Da Vinci Code last night. I've read the book a couple of times, and enjoyed the movie.

I was very entertained by both the book and movie although I did not picture Tom Hanks as the lead. He's too old. :p

John Wick was a gratuitously violent gun battle. It was pretty good for what it was. Well shot, and actually some of the most intense acting from a normally bland Keanu Reeves.

Agree about Hanks, but I did like the movie and really enjoyed Angels and Demons.

puts Thor fangirl helmet on/ Thor 1: Verily, I feel a rant. Portman was/is awful and the whole aliens instead of Gods man I cringe at that*. I like some of the cast a lot (namely most of the Asgardians) and the Destroyer, but the Earth stuff really cripples the character the way the films are doing it. I loved the Asgardian stuff (as I did in the 2nd film), but anything with Earth just kills it for me. I really hoped Marvel Films would go all out fantasy...

takes off helmet/ (I think Thor has been the one Marvel character whose been short-shrifted in his films.)

*And not just because I'll never see Hemsworth as Thor throughout the ages a la Godbomb storyline.

I think Natalie Portman did a fantastic job in Thor 1. She had real star prescence. And I have no issue with Thor on Earth. Wasn't he doing "Earth stuff" in the comics? Agree to disagree? :)

Bold = Hysterical :D

I’m with you that removing the mystical angle kind of dilutes it, though the whole “only someone worthy can lift the hammer” (which is clearly still a thing, even being used in Avengers 2), feels less “sciencey”.

I wonder if they’ll leave Doctor Strange as just _magic_, unexplained, no alien tech, nano-bots, etc.[?]

Riddick (2013)- has never regained the magic of Pitch Black even with Katee Sackhoff...

You know, I really dug on Chronicles of Riddick. I appreciated the attempt at creating a whole new universe, and while there was quite a few things that didn’t work, there was plenty that did, and I actually wanted to see more (vs. going back to the original “monsters on a planet” formula). The directors cut is worth checking out.

Vin is really invested in the character and movies, he said he’d definitely be up for a 4th movie (assuming it would be another scaled down adventure like Riddick just to accommodate a smaller budget).

Installment 3 (Riddick) not only has monsters on a planet that come out this time when it rains, but has John's Father wanting to know about his son (law enforcement/bounty hunter dude) that bit it in PB.
CoR just did not click for me.

Riddick (2013)- has never regained the magic of Pitch Black even with Katee Sackhoff...

For me, I enjoyed all three Riddick movies. I tried not to look at them as a series, but more of stand-alone films. However, I do agree that Pitch Black was the best of them.

CoR just did not click for me.

It’s definitely very polarizing (and didn’t perform very well at the BO). It was such a 180º from PB with it’s introduction of a whole universe, dozens of characters, various races, religions - it was basically a Robert E. Howard novel!

Riddick (Part 3), did a great job of incorporating some of the elements of Part 2, but keeping the story more grounded and personal.

Plus ... Katee Sackhoff ... :D

Malificent (2014)- Not what I or probably anyone expected, but excellent. I liked it better than the 1959 animated movie and it was Disney that brought it to us. :)

Interested in the original fairy tail, I found several references upon what is supposed to be based. All interesting reads, the first is the oldest, and if I read it right, #2 &3 are plagiarized versions of the first.

Thing is, by removing the God quotent the earthbound stuff is weakened considerably. The Donald Blake arc in the comics made sense because Thor was completely stripped of his power in a way that forced him to find humility and the hidden Mjolnir in a place he least expected.

Portman, well she took me clean out of both films. I tried to be open minded (I don't mind the profession change), but I did not believe her as an astro physicist or love interest for Thor. Plus the earth stuff got more than a bit stupid (Darcy and Erik anyone?)

But as you say, (in my best Boris the Animal imitation) let's Agree to Disgree. :D

Picks up cranky Hammer:

Doctor Strange - from what Feige has said, he's talking quantum physics and going along the same science BS line as Thor the 'What you call magic is actually science...'

Marvel can pretend to honor Ditko all they want but it looks like it'll be science since a lot of the top Marvel folks in the films and comics are not fans of magic. They've been neutering Doctor Strange since the late 90s. <sigh>

Kind of a bummer that Disney doesn't say, hey folks Malificent, Fantasia, Tolkien. Magic can work let's explore another side of Marvel cosmic. I've still got those comics so I'll just curl up with 'em.

puts down cranky hammer/

The trend is maximize profits on successful franchises. Doubling, tripling the cost of seeing such films in the theater.

Exactly. Otherwise there would have been two Hobbit films rather than 3.

Thanks for the literary references. I'll rent Malificent when time permits.

In the movie, wasn't Thor stripped of his powers too and found some humility? :) For Thor, I don't have any real comic reference to compare to (not familiar) so I simply enjoyed the story and had no issue with NP playing a physicist. :) There are other comic franchises where I have had to overcome large deviations in original plots and mythos, the prime example is the X-Men, but I've enjoyed many of those movies (hated some) while being able to set aside the liberties taken. Days od Future Past did little for me. :-/

Yes, but the aliens instead of gods thing cheapens that considerably. As someone who loves Norse Mythology (and accepts Marvel's large deviations just fine), I just felt there could have been so much more with Thor.

I would not object to a Sif and the Warriors Three tv series either. They've all been fantastic and that would be a fun way to continue the 9 realms stuff after the Thor movies conclude.

There are a lot of changes in comicbook films I can swing with, Iron Man and Captain America The Winter Soldier to name two, but I definitely agree with you about X-Men. I really enjoyed First Class and The Wolverine movie, but Days was quite disappointing.

And as of now, by the magic of Hammer Horror, I am over the whole Doctor Strange thing too. Rewatched a favorite Christopher Lee film and not only does he look like Strange, he threw down some terrific white magic against the baddies too. While the story/character is completely Dennis Wheatley, in my rusty brain, it's a Doctor Strange movie I can happily roll with. Is it any wonder he literally stole the final Hobbit 3 trailer with one line.

Thor = God. I've always had to overcome this because a fight with him should be no contest, right? Unless their priorities lie in other directions or this qualification does not equal complete reality altering abilities. It's clear the definition of God is very omnipotent but very abstract to a point where humans can't really understand the mechanics or see the limits, but there could be limits. Advanced alien could qualify as god as far as we can detect.

A fair point to make. The Deus Ex Machina - a large reason why Marvel frowns upon magical/mythological characters over the past 15 years, put these people in charge of the film end as well and there you go.

Thor often fought characters as powerful or more so than him. So you can work around the god and deus Ex machina elements easily. And they could even use the Donald Blake element to strip him of his abilities. The Norse gods are not immortal either, just very long lived (if they're lucky.)

This can written creatively. Marvel chose not to explore the fantasy end and that boggles my mind. Not in the very least because their parent company is down with magic and fantasy. You'd think they'd want to tap into that audience and, more importantly, the money.

Not a fan of the alien angle because of the ancient aliens as gods conspiracy business. That drives me up a tree (and not Yggdrasil ;))

Movie watched:

The Devil Rides Out/The Devil's Bride. I do hope this gets released here again some time soon. My old Anchor Bay disc walked years ago.

It was surprising how good this movie was. Started watching with low expectations, but was pleasantly surprised.

I caught both Guardians of the Galaxy and Edge of Tomorrow on a plane. Both were quite enjoyable!

I'm not familiar enough with the comics to make any comparisons there, but it was a fun ride with a cheesy good soundtrack.

Edge was enjoyable for seeing Tom Cruise get flung around like a rag doll over and over and over again. I thought it would be too similar to Oblivion but it worked out ok.

yeah Edge of Tomorrow is surprisingly good ...at first yo aren't sure if it's gimmicky but then in the middle you suddenly aren't sure anymore "is he doing this for the first time now or not ?"

Was also surpsied to learn after watching the film that it is also based on japanese "light novel" "All you Need is Kill" .. which of course the japanese also turned into a manga spin off ;)

because I am a sucker for punishment

Silly me watched Mother of Tears again for the first time since it's release. The acting (or lack there of... so glad Asia has apparently quit) was what killed it for me. And Dario hates Inferno? X-X I am pretty patient with Dario's films regarding the acting, but his last few films have been particularly bad. Rewatching older Argento is probably the best bet.

Also caught Thor again last night. Big ol' meh. There are elements I like but overall it does not quite tickle me the way I'd hoped a Thor movie would. Still, I wouldn't mind seeing Branagh come back and direct the third one.
