Watched Thor the other day. It wasn't that great honestly. First half was better than second half.

I also want to watch The Imitation Game, but it's not showing anywhere in the whole city of SF. only 4 theaters in NYC and LA despite its "wide release" yesterday. ********

It's hard to believe it's been 20 years. When it was released, there were a bunch of toys that didn't seem to sell well.

I just finished Ted. I still like Marky Mark, and Mila Kunis is still worth seeing, but I was left wondering why they left a plot out.

Yeah, I had to have a double-take on the year when I looked it up the other day. Amazing that it has been around for so long.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1

I thought the acting was good and it followed the book very closely. I'm not sure how they will replace Philip Seymour Hoffman in part 2.

I liked the movie although it was mostly a setup for part 2 and could be considered somewhat slow. I also couldn't see any advantage of seeing this in a theater unless you can't wait for the Blu-ray.

I'll wait and watch them back to back... :)

Amazing CGI, great fun in space, and lots of subtle jokes.

Space gives you a lot of "freedom" in this movie, especially after watching the very realistically (most of it, at least) rendering of the vastness and helplessness you experience in space in Interstellar :p

I took my wife to see it this weekend as she's read all the books and we've been watching each installment of the movies so far. I agree with your comments about the movie. It definitely felt like a setup movie and, for me at least, kinda weakened the character of Katniss.

Great plan. It's not a "big screen" movie so feel free to wait.

Whiplash is a movie dead set against the self esteem model of teaching.

Back in the day, there were plenty of teachers like the one portrayed by JK Simmons in this film. As Pink Floyd sang:

When we grew up and went to school
There were certain teachers who would
Hurt the children in any way they could
By pouring their derision upon anything we did
And exposing every weakness
However carefully hidden by the kids

Whiplash makes a surprisingly strong case that this abusive/honest style of teaching is essential for some students to achieve greatness. It's certainly not a point of view often portrayed with this level of intensity in our current pop culture.

Despite the extreme debasement on display here, it would make a good film for many parents to view to help frame the level of discipline they would like to apply in their own child-rearing.

(Note: Worth seeing for the jazz drumming and band performances alone.)

5 out of 5.

BTW, here's the trailer.

Raiders of the Lost Ark - absolutely perfect movie. Never tire of watching it. < I wish my screenwriting teacher would use this instead of so much recent garbage for study material >

The quintessential action movie, one of my favorites. Too bad I've seen it so many times it's hard to still enjoy it like the first time.

What movie? Your image is not viewable in the forum. Links to IMDB images, with the long string of letters and numbers frequently have issues displaying in this forum.

Thanks for confirming! :)

The Katniss character was very weak the first half of the third book (I thought they followed the book very closely). The second half of the book is where she gets stronger again :D. I think where the movie portrayal is slightly different than the book are her feelings towards Peta. I thought in the book, she was more cold hearted with more of a distinction between her heroic public persona and who she actually was (in the books, she used people more).

Having not read the books, I appreciate the insight. My wife made a similar comment saying that Katniss kind of "loses it" for a while during the 3rd book.

That is enlightening, because I thought that Jennifer Lawrence sort of bombed that performance. Perhaps it was intentional.

The Bedford Incident (1965)- Cold War drama , where a U.S. Destroyer skipper (Richard Widmark) pushes his crew to the brink in his zeal to harass a Russian sub along the Greenland coast while being observed for a magazine article by reporter, Sydney Poitier. I get chills every time I've watched this.

I have the opposite feeling. Parts if not all of Raiders feels new and exciting to me; partially because I care about the good guys and their quest, and seeing it in 1981 is one of the best film experiences I ever had <despite it being in a crap theatre which no longer exists.>

Can't say that about any of the sequels though.

Don't get me wrong, I can still watch it. It's just that when you (me) have all the lines memorized... ;)

Bad dates...

I knew you still enjoyed Raiders. Such superb dialog to memorize. ;)

I get stuck on films including those rare few with lines I have etched in my brain *(Escape from New York). I can watch certain movies over and over again (sometimes several viewings in one day.) This is a rare thing now.

The worthy movies, I purchase (Bluray, not streamed) and watch them on occasion. I've had an urge to watch Inception. Still making my mind up about an Interstellar purchase. Actually I need to watch it again. :)
