Interesting because in Thor (the original), I thought she had a real onscreen presence, something difficult to achieve. And I liked her in V for Vendetta although Star Wars Episode 1-3 did little for me, but for that case, I blame those movies with Hayden Christensen overshadowing her in awfulness. ;) Thor 2 was a serious disappointment all around too.

From the Star Wars thread:

I understand and agree with the validity of this critique as I see more and more cases of "milking it", (my repeat rant) movie makers taking a successful franchise and making the audience pay not once, not twice, but sometimes 3 times for what could have been told in a single or 2 part movie. Of course their excuse is, "but we are giving you more!" In the case of The Hobbit, they should have given us less, a lot less. Two movies at most.

For the Hobbit, if you look at significant events (Spoilers):

-Party
-Rivendell
-Orcs, escape from
-Beorn visit
-Mirkwood, spiders -----------I would have split this here with a spider cliff hanger. :D
-Woodland Faires and escape
-To the Mountain, Smaug
-Battle of 5 armies.

Keep in mind that the Battle of Five Armies is all most a footnote in the book.

You know Thor The Dark World wasn't great, but I really enjoyed the non-Midgard moments - save for Loki's last trick which annoys me. As for Portman, hey to each their own. Really hope Thor Ragnarok will be a good movie, if it's anything close to Captain America The Winter Soldier, I will be delighted.

I won a chance to possibly get into an IMAX screening/partial cast Q&A of The Hobbit Battle of the Five Armies later this week* -by possibly means first come first served. If I get in, I"ll be happy I did not have to pay to see this movie. My enthusiasm (never that high to begin with) is all but zapped. Still, if Christopher Lee gets a few minutes to shine that will make it worth seeing (I Hope anyway.)

As far as Star Wars, bring it. A huge fan (despite the prequels) and I am psyched for Luke's next arc. As far as spin offs and the like, I will probably pass unless it's a character or concept I like. So I am not worried about over saturation at this point.

Again, (yes, this is becoming slightly repetitive) this is yet another case where I have not seen the movie (and will be interested in reading your thoughts), but have actually read the book.

And, as with 'Wuthering Heights', this - 'Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde' - is a stunning book, disturbing, gripping and (this is R. L. Stevenson after all) extremely well written.

Oh it was a great film. Ingrid Bergman's performance was wonderful and very enrapturing with her emotions for Dr. Jekyll and fear for Mr. Hyde.

That movie is a guilty pleasure of mine.

It's a pleasure of mine on occasion, without the guilt. I don't think there is a Bruce Willis film I haven't liked.

Decided to pull one from my Netflix queue...

An opinion would be appreciated. :p

Yes I recall the sentinels and time travel from a cartoon I watched as a kid. And I'm sorry I can't see Dr Trask and not think of Game of Thrones.

Type cast... ;)

I could end up seeing the last Hobbit in the theater due to my Grandson. Otherwise I'll wait and stream it.

I'm Gonna Get You Sucka - I grew up watching blaxploitation movies so this Wayans brothers movie was fun and occasionally stupid funny in spots. I haven't seen it in a while but it gave me a much needed laugh today. It would make for a silly double-bill with Black Dynamite.

Whiplash is a movie dead set against the self esteem model of teaching.

Back in the day, there were plenty of teachers like the one portrayed by JK Simmons in this film. As Pink Floyd sang:

Whiplash makes a surprisingly strong case that this abusive/honest style of teaching is essential for some students to achieve greatness. It's certainly not a point of view often portrayed with this level of intensity in our current pop culture.

Despite the extreme debasement on display here, it would make a good film for many parents to view to help frame the level of discipline they would like to apply in their own child-rearing.

(Note: Worth seeing for the jazz drumming and band performances alone.)

5 out of 5.

BTW, here's the trailer.

I saw this when it came out and I loved it too. JK Simmons was the best supporting actor in any film that came out this year. great writing as well.

Girlfriend started watching Star Wars (again - but I doubt that :p). Skipped I-II and joined her with III onwards. Episode III is somewhat ok but only because you know it just gets incredibly better afterwards I guess, lol.

Two observations:

I-III lack a strong female character! I do have a crush on Portman since I can remember but her character is unbelievable badly written. I recall her being somewhat active in the first one but afterwards it's just staying at home looking beautiful or worried (about her beloved one and/or democracy - while doing almost next to nothing) - nothing compared to Leia! Third movie is almost ridiculous when you look at it from that perspective. She's absolutely passive, best line was something like: "Should I go back to my beautiful home(planet) now and prepare the children's room already, Anakin?" WTF!?)

The specialized versions of IV, V and VI do the movies no favour imo - in fact I'm glad I possess the de-specialized ones. ;) :D

edit: and I have to say that the German dub is quite good - I prefer the German Yoda and Darth Vader actually :D
And no, I'm not that much nostalgic here (I guess) since I absolutely prefer the original dubs over those I know from my childhood when revisiting movies nowadays almost all the time.

I too have the Added Footage "Special Version" Star Wars collection and don't think it adds anything of significance to the story, even detracts as you say. My biggest complaint, and I have no idea why they were worried about Hans shooting the bounty hunter under the table. Can't he be somewhat bad? :p

Detracts. That's the word! Thanks for helping me out, Huntn! :D

Yes, I'd even argue that if that scene wouldn't been altered and hence the whole Han shot first posse wouldn't exist - Lukas would face half the hatred he receives now ;)

But regardless, I always figured Mos Isley an incredible vile place to be with a good contrast between rather deserted streets and crowded bars/hide-outs whatever. Now you see petty dinos all around. :/

Harmy FTW!

George Claims Greedo Always Shot First but because of an editing error/sloppy editing due to lack of footage or something like that, it came out the way it did. Sounds like mumbo jumbo to me. ;) And thinks that fans who are upset want Hans to be a cold blooded killer... Lol.

"The controversy over who shot first, Greedo or Han Solo, in Episode IV, what I did was try to clean up the confusion, but obviously it upset people because they wanted Solo [who seemed to be the one who shot first in the original] to be a cold-blooded killer, but he actually isn’t. It had been done in all close-ups and it was confusing about who did what to whom. I put a little wider shot in there that made it clear that Greedo is the one who shot first, but everyone wanted to think that Han shot first, because they wanted to think that he actually just gunned him down."

Seemed more like self defense to me. I could live with it and still find him to be a likeable character. :D:D

Speaking of unnecessary sequels: Home Alone 2- New city, so the kid is not home alone, and the old bad guys just by chance switch cities too. How convienent, ugh! :p

that is exactly what I am doing...Inherent Vice on Friday.

>>>

and last night I finally caught Prometheus

Laughably awful, except for Michael Fassbender's creepy David and the Judge Dredd looking geologist whose last trip resulted in a nasty headache of brain busting proportions.

Now, I am not a fan of the ancient aliens as creators etc. but I pushed that dislike aside until this got so ridiculous, I could not stop laughing, (Heard Benny Hill and Monty Python music/noises during the monster bits.)

I kept thinking Mulder and Scully please save this mess, but no. I kept rooting for the giant face hugger.

So for me, the Alien films begin and end with the first two.

I can sum up my feelings for your Prometheus review with -> :p. However I'm with you on the first 2 Aliens, the ones that follow suck not just a little but lots and lots. :D

I want to know why Prometheus is ridiculous? I won't lose my temper. :p for good measure.

LOL...you are a good man sir.

SPOILERS abound if you haven't seen this...

Sorry Huntn, but you asked...:p

Why Prometheus was ridiculous? (and she's off...)

The logic behind the engineers:

a) We created humans but we hate you, so you will die, just because we hate you.

b) The engineers look like goofy albino human Giants instead of the creepy Giger skeletal thingy... (thus removing all of their creep factor and the fact that they engineered us.)

and big ol' abdominal hole: the face hugger victim is nowhere near his piloting chair a la Alien.

Character stuff:

a) We need cranky or cocky crew members where the mutate causing black oil and its' beastie are thawing out (X Files - what no Krycek?)

b) And old man Weyland (probably the worst performance I've seen from Guy Pearce) wants his creator to give him more life (um hi Blade Runner - I realize Ridley directed both Alien and BR.. but do Weyland and Tyrell Corp know each other?) - is this an Alien movie or what?

and bb) of course Weyland's daughter wants daddy's crown and android David hates Weyland too.

cc) Speaking of David, is he Ash or Bishop? (Well at least they did not give him a name that started with a C) and his ever ready decapitated head going on and on...

dd) Disliked Shaw outright. Noomi played her so wooden I felt like she was the A.I. and Fassbender was human. I kept thinking "...and this believer is the person who guided the old loony Weyland and the crew to their demises?" I could not care less about her (I was gunning for the Will E Coyote splat Theron received to take out Noomi too.)

And Shaw's beliefs? Huh? She still wants her cross at the end and is determined to find the psycho alien engineers who love their creations so much they want to kill them. She deserves her fate.

The operation scene was hilarious: Shaw gets a c section in a machine set up for male physicality and the machine does it anyway because she set it to abdominal surgery even after it is set to male only? Uh, what?

and the monster stuff was slapstick funny. Not what I want to see in Alien movie. I almost fell out of my chair when the geologist tripped after the little cobra squid bled acid on his helmet and he fell right into the black goo. Yay!

For those of you who like this movie, you are stronger souls than me. I'll go crawl back under my iMac now. I apologize for not breathing or thinking way too hard about this movie. Oy, I can be such a fan girl some times.

I liked Prometheus for the way it looked and the concept. Story-wise it looked as if Scott was making it up on the fly, (which he admits in the dvd voice over track). The geologist that gets lost and the biologist that doesn't understand handling animals is pretty much the "comic relief" of the movie. Kinda dumb. Also I don't know why people are putting Prometheus in the same category as Interstellar either, way different IMO.
