Mad Max - Fury Road. Loved it! Girlfriend as well. One of the best straight-up action flics I've seen in quite a while. Stagecoach on Speed type of thing or Max taking America's Next Topmodels for a stroll. Only small complaints: Could have shorten/left out some of the supposedly melancholic/love parts (which account for maybe two minutes so not that big deal) and some of the slower scores could have been less Zimmeresque.

Theron was great. And Hardy is just god tier! Bring on the sequel!! :D

Didn't know it was the same director of the others!

Ex Machina - not for me. Found it off putting and not for the obvious reasons. It felt like a rather mean spirited empty rethink of portions of Blade Runner (and I find BR extremely depressing) Still, Oscar Isaac had a couple of funny moments and (wow that Bluebeard element with ... well never mind.) I think I'll be renting new movies and buying old ones for the foreseeable future (as I have been... but Ex Machina proved this.)

And the usual diet of Kung Fu movies lately. Celestial productions, help me I've rediscovered the Venom mob and am digging deeper into the Shaw Brothers catalog.

I'd seen Five (Deadly) Venoms as a teenager which strangely did not register while slightly lesser The Kid with the Golden Arm did. Nothing like making up for lost time. The former is a fun and entertaining movie even after you know who the mystery Venom is. The latter had one great standout fight, but misused the actor/martial artist playing the title character. I like it, but of the many films made with the fellows who played the Venoms, this is an occasional viewing. The nicest surprise was watching a crude digital bootleg the Shaw Brothers version of Sword Stained with Royal Blood. That was outstanding, very operatic, some amazing fights and easy to understand despite the convoluted story.

It is bumming me out that the only official dvd version available is the soon to be out of print region 3 Hong Kong blu. Since Robert Rodriguez' El Rey network showed this in March and the distributor are continuously releasing a healthy dose of SB films on iTunes, I can hope this is included in the next wave after the Brave Archer series etc. Ditto for the Secret Service in the Imperial Court.

I've seen and bought a ridiculous amount more (but thankfully due to coupon codes, gift cards and cancelling all future comic book pre-orders) I'm in a good place budget wise and in a great place film watching wise.

@twietee:

Buio Omega is NUTS. Very, very dark and mean spirited. One of the most bizarre and crazy Italian horrors. The lovely actress who played the blind blonde woman in The Beyond is the lead in this. I haven't seen it in some time (last year it was under $10 at Amazon U.S., guess it's getting scarce.)

The Jeckle one I've heard of, but do not think I've seen it.

Oh you might like this Martial Arts horror film, Human (Skin) Lanterns from 1982 I'm waiting on my copy but it sounds like a very off the trails mix of Murders in the Rue Morgue, giallos and one of the many Chinese hells (being skinned alive.) The soundtrack sounds giallo-like too through an Eastern filter. What little I've seen plays like a period piece Chinese Argento which has me all kinds of curious (despite my Italo horror burn out) Unfortunately the other film that plays like a Chinese version of Argento's Deep Red (Dreadnaught) is priced out of my budget now. I do think that's on YouTube though.

Glad you liked MMFR.

Tomorrowland was visually very appealing and a little preachy.

Mad Max: Fury Road was really good. Photography and action sequences were terrific.

Glad to hear you're doing better!

You HAVE to see MM-FR at least once in the cinema - it's mandatory! Going to see it twice and that's a huge one for me. Maybe even in 3d although I've read that it doesn't really make a difference.

Saw Henry-Portrait of a Serial Killer lately. Nasty. Really, really nasty. Love it! :D Good movie, good actors and actually one that I would recommend to friends despite it's nastiness - unlike Last House on the Left for example. Ending: you saw it coming miles before - but didn't lose any of its punch.

I'll be streaming this when it becomes available. I appreciated Blade Runner's premise but was not a fan because it was so dark and sad. Maybe I should watch it again. ;) Regarding the possible future acceptance of AI, I added a blurb in this tech thread. :)

Never saw Henry... and probably never will. Real world serial killers are a big no no. Fake ones or ones based on mythology (such as the implication of that particular Chinese Hell in Human Lanterns) I can roll with.

Not 100% percent better but budgeting in more clever ways now.

Mad Max, I'll pass. I'm glad you like it.

yeah, Blade Runner makes me want to crawl into a coffin and shut the lid. It's a great movie, but way too depressing and heavy for me. I saw your blurb about AI and technology sir: that's a scary thought. It's bad enough we have what passes for relationships online but to have a robot enand not a human as a lover feels incredibly scary and cold to me.

your pass on mad max really irritates me, but ok. guess i have to accept that. :D

i cancelled 99% of my pulls either, don't really read them anyway due lack of time (or they just got stale). basically iron fist is the only one left standing.

henry is almost documentary like and a 'good' film too at that. there are leagues between it and last house... for example. but i completely understand your stance. i was just surprised myself since i expected some kind of shock value mostly and much less this quiet, observing and matter to fact movie. nasty nonetheless of course.

After Ex Machina I've pretty much given up on new films save for this next Star Wars trilogy (and depending on my situation and how I like this first one, I might not even bother with the latter two theatrically.) I'd rather spend what $ I have on films that really entertain me and ones that I know I will rewatch for many years to come. I have to put my boot down as far as my latest fix too. Another snag in the real life arena. But hey to each their own...

The Count of Monte Cristo (2002)- One of my favorite college books, this is an excellent version with an all star cast and Jim Caviezel who plays Edmond Dantes.

Nice documentary, I watched it recently too. Crazy life he's had, and what a musician!

Yes he is an incredible rhythm guitar player, probably the best in rock. I loved that he was Jerry's best friend and never was jealous of him. I'll never forget when Jerry died in 1995. It was like I lost a brother in rock. I can only imagine how Bob felt :)...Well we know how he felt, pretty much worse than I did......

There was a great line in the documentary--I won't remember exactly--but its essence was that it take a person with minimal ego to be a great rhythm guitarist since lead gets all the attention. And this is totally Bob as far as I can tell. He's pretty humble, and I love this about him.

Actually it was really sad to hear what happened to Jerry when they got very famous in the late 80s. I know a lot of people crave fame, but I'm certainly not one of them. I'd be absolutely miserable. Sounds like Jerry felt similarly. :(

last night, I watched Nightcrawler. Jake Gyllenhall was terrific, and I would definitely recommend seeing it if you get the chance. Superb flick.

I agree with everything you said. I would never want to be famous. I totally understand where Jerry was coming from because I personally couldn't handle all the attention. I'd probably end up hiding in my basement for the rest of my life.
