Steve Jobs (2015)...

SteveJobs2015.jpg

Pretty boring movie. Nothing outstanding in it.

However, it's interesting that, it being the Apple "approved" version, it can't hide how big a doche he was either, specially when it came to his daughter.

Along with the terrible Ashton Kutcher version, this one is the worst one yet.

Cheers!

Brooklyn
is a lovely little romance about a young Irish emigrant's move to America.

The story won't set any records for innovation, but that's it's charm - - it's a simple old school coming of age tale. The only bit I had trouble with was the last act; I didn't really buy what seemed like a tacked-on plot development.

The gauzy nostalgic Brooklyn setting and the exquisite set design, costumes and cinematography all made for a delightful immersion in an era perhaps only truly familiar to our recent ancestors.

But the pièce de résistance is Saoirse Ronan's brilliant naturalistic performance in the lead role - - she is perfect.

What do you mean by Apple approved?

I re-watched John Wick again, and I will say while I was underwhelmed when I first saw it. I guess its grown on me and seeing it for a second time allowed some increased enjoyment out of the movie.

Sorry, I was wrong about this... initially there seemed to exist some support for the movie - being an Aaron Sorkin script, and directed by Danny Boyle - specially from Steve Wozniak and others, as it's somewhat based on the official bio. And specially after other movies that show Jobs as a jerk. However, after watching it, everybody hated it and dismissed it.

So no, not an Apple "approved" version. It's a terrible movie that, as all the ones before it, show Jobs in full-jerk mode. I guess there's no way around that. This one just sucks.

cheers!

A lot of action in the movie.

Was it me or was Tom Cruise kind of robotic-like in that movie or was that his interpretation of the character? Oops, wrong movie. ;) I'm thinking of Jack Reacher. Anyway, any parallels in these two movies? I anticipate I'll watch it (John Wick). Action can have it's virtues, speaking of action...

Got around to seeing Mad Max: Fury Road the other day.

Super weird, but hugely entertaining.

Recently watched Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) and at the risk of ruining my rep as a respected movie reviewer ;), this movie was great! :D:D A good basic story, that not only successfully revives the original atmosphere of Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior (1981) but leads into a great conglomeration of correagraphed action and impressive visuals. I loved Tom Hardy, Charlize Theron, Nicolas Hoult, and Hugh Keays-Bryne. Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron both gave outstandingly subtle performances when they were'nt bashing heads.

Also rewatched Ant-Man (2015), this is a good Marvel Studio movie. I really liked Paul Rudd, Michael Douglass, Evangiline Lilly, and Corey Stoll in this (along with House of Cards and The Strain).

The Heroes (1980) Director Wu Ma's ode to his mentor Chang Cheh. Ti Lung's traitorous, former Shaolin student Cai serving the nefarious Emperor (Chan Wai Man.) Seems the Emperor wants to wipe out all kung fu and Cai's plan is not to kill the Shaolins but imprison and "torture" them (in other words, he's pretending to be a traitor and wants Shaolin to topple the Emperor.)

Some superb fights (I love when Ti Lung does Wing Chun), a neat concept and Chan Wai Man looking 100% insane boss.
Despite the non-Shaw Brothers budget, the make up and costumes are quite nice and the acting by CWM and TL again elevates some familiar concepts. What this needs is a proper wide screen print with the native dub as the vhs English copy I have does this no favors. I'd love this and another Wu Ma / Chan Wai Man collaboration (The Hand Cuff) properly restored and released on dvd somewhere.

Sigh. Why can't they make a really decent film of my favorite classic superhero comic book. Please, please, please let the characters fall back to Marvel/Disney so they can make an MCU version.

Anyhow, caught the last 2/3 of Fantastic Four on a plane last week. It was OK. I need to watch the whole thing on a larger screen for full effect.

My 12 year old was watching 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer on the TiVo this morning and I absolutely see why they had to reboot the series. I thought the first one of that series wasn't too terrible, but this one reminded me of a crappy SyFy TV movie like Sharknado. Very few redeeming qualities, even Jessica Alba does little for me as a blonde. Avoid.

I also caught the last 3/4 of the Vacation reboot also while on a plane. Funny, but in a different way than the first couple of Chevy Chase outings. More like "We're the Millers". Makes me want to binge watch the first two with my boys.

Steve Jobs (2015)...

Yah, I’m skipping that one. I was curious at first. All the hype eventually turned me off. I guess what I don’t get about the ongoing focus on Steve Jobs is that as much as I really like most of the Apple gear I’ve bought over decades now, I’m not really any more eager to prowl around his private (or even professional) life than I would be regarding the lives of people who created some of my other very special gear, like maybe the quarter-inch quilter's foot for sewing machines, or my stainless steel wide-mouth canning funnel, or progressive lenses for my eyeglasses. A documentary on innovation in industry is one thing. A “biopic” of an industry leader is something else again. I’ll pass.

Brooklyn is a lovely little romance about a young Irish emigrant's move to America.

I want to see that too. Thanks for the reminder. :)

Well I may be subjected to some holiday-themed movies at our celebrations tomorrow, so for tonight I’m going to watch Ratatouille instead. I just love that movie. The female chef is such a piece of work!

So weird having a Christmas Eve where it’s 60 degrees in the Catskills, even just after nightfall. Last year on this date a strong cold front was moving in with gusts up to 50mph, and it was about 40 degrees colder! I think I watched March of the Penguins as my Christmas “warmup” last year... from underneath a couple extra blankets.

It was okay for a kids film. Rather predictable but then it's for kids.
I really enjoyed Big Hero Six. It's an origin movie, with more to come. But Baymax was awesome and most importantly this film marked the launch of Disney's new animation engine that actually handles light correctly.

Hence, there were several scenes (the flying over San Fran Tokyo, the initial robot fighting scene, the scene where Hiro meets Baymax at home) that were just showing off the power of the new system.

But I thought it was beautifully filmed, had some great humour and for a Disney animation had a very current and topical soundtrack.

I thought it was a great movie as well. Might watch it with the nieces tomorrow. They're 2 and 3 and always like to do the Baymax fist bump.

My six year old girl loves the fist bump. And even as an adult and knowing that Baymax is a robot/machine, it nearly brought tears to my eyes when Hiro recovered Baymax's memory.

And who could love Fred, the secret billionaire with the superhero dad?

Fantastic Four was one of the comics I enjoyed as a kid, but the movies have been underwhelming :(

Star Wars episode IV

How was it? :)

@kazmac If there is anyone who might know which film I'm looking for, despite how terribly I can recall the details, it will be you! :)

It's a martial arts film that I rented from Blockbuster, probably, 10-12 years ago and really enjoyed. About all I can remember is that, I think, it was set in Japan where a young man, and woman fell in love and it was possibly forbidden or it upset someone in power. They fled north to some quiet, beautiful village to be together but were hunted down regardless. What I do remember is that the people coming after them sort of flew when they jumped. The cinematography was such that some of the action sequences were partly done in slow motion as the attacks took place. I want to say I recall the Samurai attackers were flying in to a courtyard as they jumped down from the village rooftops.

The whole movie was beautifully done and the settings gorgeous as well as the costumes on all the characters which were very nice and authentic looking.

I know that's not much to go on and my paltry description is lacking a lot of detail, but I am in hopes you might have an idea on what it was.
