I saw Antonioni's Il Gride (The Scream) from '57 in the cinema two days ago. Great movie. Had to shed a tear at the end ;)

Also saw Mallet's Le Feu Follet (Will-O-The-Whip / The Fire Within) from 1931. One of my all time favorites. Great actors, great dialougues and story + Satie's Gymnopedies and Gnossienesses as the score.

Such poor saps! :D

Saw the start of this before, but fell asleep (I do that all the time!)
So hopefully I see the end tonight.

BTW, which ending is better, the original or the Director's Cut? Some stuff I've read online seems to indicate the DC has a "happier ending" or maybe it's just more definitive.
So I just watched Blade Runner again today only this time it wasn't from my local iTunes library, but from Netflix. I'm assuming the Netflix version is the directors cut where I see him follow her into the elevator and then they cut to them driving off together and flying over a beautiful valley at sunset. This is the version I haven't seen before and it is a happier ending than the other version I have.

X-men first class. I think I prefer the X-men films more than the Marvels tbh. I think they have a better story line. The new X-men film is out here in a bit, which is probably why the other one is on.

I took my kids to see Captain America - Civil War and we all enjoyed it very much.

I had my expectations rather high given the good reviews and what not, and I was not disappointed. The story took a bit to ramp up, but the twists and turns in the plot were engaging and the fight scenes really done exceptionally well.

Nine Demons (1983) - this awful, awful movie tries to marry the tale of Faust to a martial arts piece, but the poor casting and writing are not saved by the cameos from Lu Feng and Chiang Sheng.

The less I say about this one the better, but avoid at all costs.

Yes for a change. I liked it better.

Its not good at all.

Ah, it's settled. :p I know the original story (text spoiler summary ), they did not go to Mars, but they were hiding something about Mars, so I was wondering how true the second movie was to the original short story.

My favorite X-Men were the first, the second, (directed by Brian Singer- were amazing), with significant focus spent on Wolverine, and I love the Wolverine Origins movie. Although technically they all are ensemble movies, narrowing the focus on a couple of characters makes for a better story. This is why I dislike The Avenger movies, they are all action, although I've not seen the latest.

I did not care for First Class, too much ensemble, no individual character development, other than Magneto and Professor Xavier's completely fabricated early relationship (as compared to the original material), and Rebecca Romijn, the original Mistique just beats the snot out of Jennifer Lawrence's version. Absolutely no comparison in appearance and capturing this character on screen.

Oops, rant:

I'm done with the Erik, Charles and Raven show. And for me, Jennifer Lawrence is ridiculously overrated anyway. I agree, she's awful in this role. I wanted a lot more with the background mutants on both sides (specifically Azazel who was done so much better here in the film than in the comics. A "Red" Russian mutant - what a Commie. Azazel also emphasized the "period" nature of First Class which I thought was done quite well. I wanted more of that.

Personally, I can't wait until Bryan Singer moves onto something other than X-Men. He has no idea what he's doing with these characters and neglects so many interesting mutants and ideas for the same old, same old.

rant over/

HOW DARE YOU!! Bryan Singer has been responsible for the best two movies of the series, despite trashing original story lines. :p Then left as director. I see he has produced some of the newer editions to the series. My question is, has anyone been faithful to the original X-Men material? With a movie project, I always wonder whom to blame for the story, Director, Producers, Studios, or all of them depending. Just don't tell me you hate the original Mistique and maybe I'll forgive you. :D

Have you noticed that breasts without nipples and nipples without breasts, meet with the PG13 seal of approval, but never the twain shall meet? Lol :)

Just noticed the nipples and breasts comments and imagery in your response. If there was a clap smiley, I'd use it (Rarely bat an eyelash at such things now considering all lady parts on display in Italian genre cinema.)

:p

Your question of has any filmmaker been faithful to the X-Men universe is a good one which I cannot fully answer. I knew Wolverine's history backwards and forwards as I adored the character in the 80s and 90s, so from Logan's standpoint, no. I understand adapting any comic or novel to the screen requires changes to appeal to the masses, but Singer just blatantly ignores so much character and story. I think it comes down to director, writer, studio execs as you said. Too many fingers in the pie. Singer kept the very basic framework for certain characters (Magneto in particular), but it's very rare when you have a film or tv mini series which really honors the source material. The only comic book film I can think of which successfully mirrored it's source was Hellboy.

I thought Rebecca was fantastic as Mystique. She was threatening, sexy, dangerous and a fun character. Outside of the makeup application / removal time, it's clear Rebecca was having fun playing Raven.

What aspect of the film dissapointed you?

Besides the whole thing? :p

Some of the lines just made you think, what the hell. "I remember the taste of your breastmilk over my tongue" (or something close to that.)

And then the suspension of disbelief just went beyond too far.

So if we use 20% of our brainpower, we will burn away like ash? And if we could use a full 100% of our brain power, we can 1. make mass/material out of nothing (when she starts growing black tendrils out of her body) 2. You can strip away all reality, not just for you, but for people around you as well (scientists standing in a pure white room).

Watched a couple of Nicole Kidman films today.

The Others (2001)
A woman who lives in a darkened old house with her two photosensitive children becomes convinced that her family home is haunted.

The Railway Man (2013)
A former British Army officer, who was tormented as a prisoner of war at a Japanese labor camp during World War II, discovers that the man responsible for much of his treatment is still alive and sets out to confront him.

Stumbled into The Lady from Shanghai (1948) this evening. Excellent.

and the black and white cinematography was as gorgeous as Ms. Hayworth.

and

Triumph of Two Kung Fu Arts (1977)

I suspect this film would have had a lot more impact if 1) I got a native language copy and 2) Chan Wai Man's character
didn't epically fail in his revenge quest...
I was hoping he'd rise up from the muck (and be in the film a lot more than he is.) Better the second time around, but definitely needs more CWM kicking serious butt.
