High Plains Drifter (1973) Still my favorite Clint Eastwood western and the one that changed my mind about westerns in the first place. Love it.

one of my least fave westerns.

Guns of Navarone (1961)- on TCM on this fine Memorial Day. :)

Jurrasic World (2015)- This movie is growing on me. Sequel planned for 2018.

Alternate Ending: when the TRex is released into the final battle they discover Indominus Rex not only has Raptor DNA, but TRex DNA as well! They unite into an unstoppable force eating all 20k guests at the park! :D

Demon of the Lute (1983) one of the latter day Shaws specifically made for children, but if you know the Shaw Brothers go for broke films of this period, you'll know it's not just for children. One of the funniest and most insane SB movies I've seen. This "kid" laughed her tush off at the tale of several folks out to stop the title character. If I'd been a little kid when this came out, I would have been spoiled for life.

Oh here's a clip because a video is worth a lot more than my words can describe. Ladies and gents, may I present Yung Fei vs. Red Haired Evil.

Saw X-Men Apocalypse with the family last weekend. It was fun and I enjoyed the movie. As I've said before, I was disappointed at the pointless language in a movie heavily intended for a younger audience. Sure, I know it's PG 13 in rating, but many people will take their kiddos under that age to see the film.

Being a comic book reader in the 80's and 90's sometimes I struggle with how they change the original stories. In the original Apocalypse storyline Angel was the big shocker when he joined with Apocalypse as a horseman. No other well known mutants like Storm, Psylocke, or Magneto were horseman. In fact, it's pretty absurd to think Apocalypse could make Magneto, one of the most powerful mutants ever, a slave to him. But, I'm just being nit picky. The movie was entertaining and it's always fun to see comic stories and characters on the big screen.

The one thing you can expect from adapted material, there will always be changes and tweaks to fit to a mass audience. Although what Marvel is doing with the source material lately imo is a lot worse than any film the studios have released so far.

Revisited the kung fu indie The Challenger (1979)

for the villain and one of the leads. Interesting little morality play about how greed can override common sense etc. While the fights are not as jaw-on-the-floor as The Loot (which really needs a blu ray release pronto), Ko Fei and David Chiang are in superb form, although the awesome Ms. Lily LiLi gets the short end of the stick and is smacked around a lot in this movie. I prefer it when she's fighting with her fists / feet or her mouth.

On occasion I've complained about descrepencies between X-Men comics and movies, some I love and some not, so this movie falls in the case by case category until I stream it. :) Is this tied plot wise to X-Men First Class? Just curious.

Yes, it's tied in that they are keeping the character connections and timelines that have been established in the past two X-Men movies. The whole Professor Xavier, Magneto, and Mystique storyline and relationships are intact. I admit, they've done a decent job of keeping things going despite the various ways that the time travel of Days of Future Past could have mixed things up.

My wife started watching this without me, and was almost going to skip it, based on the intro. We watched it together, and although not great, it was a naughty comedic romance. It wasn't nearly as bad as expected. At the end of the day, I mostly liked Bridesmaids, and mostly liked this, too. With both, I'm sure the humor is not for everyone.

The Supreme Swordman (1983) This was almost very, very good. Tthe miscast of the ever wooden Derek Yee (who is much better behind the camera than in front), the abrupt tonal shift from serious to bad comedy and the constant over cranking and wire fu in the sword fights (not to mention very obvious doubling) really knocks the wind out of this wu xia's sails.

It's too bad, as the bad guy (played by the ever reliable Pai Piao) and his assistant Crow (Yuen Wah) both have interesting arcs that are tripped up by the director suddenly remembering the young hero (Yee). The entertaining cameos by secondary Venoms crew including Kwan Fung, Lung Hsiang Tien and Wang Li (in a moving stealing moment as Living Dead, an old master who sleeps in -and- fights with his coffin) are great though. Me, I'll rewatch Wang Li's two minutes of gonzoid greatness and leave the rest of the film behind.

Life Gamble (1979)
- Chang Cheh's ode to the spaghetti western (with daggers and flags and whips instead of guns) finds a variety of rascals and one weary blacksmith trying to obtain one very precious piece of Jade from Golden Lion, the King of Gamblers. This movie is funny as hell with the awful English dub, but in its native tongue is actually quite good. And in a rare move for Chang Cheh, the women in this film are all excellent and smart (not just eye candy.) But for me, Kuo Choi's noble turn as blacksmith Qiu Zi Yu - the once fabled weapons-maker who used to ply his craft in exchange for a new kung fu technique, is one of the best characters ever to come out of a wuxia. Dang it, I want a prequel with Qiu, but that will only happen in my mind. Shame Dick Wei's awesome hammer swinging Jin Ba is not given more screen time. He's fantastic too.

This was one of the first movies I saw with most of the fellows who would comprise the original Venoms mob, and I still love it. Solid story and easy to follow even though there are at least sixteen characters in play.

Clan Feuds (1981)
Utterly bonkers Romeo and Juliette tweak via Shaw Brothers. One brother's mistaken grief goes a bit too far and throws the already precarious situation between the Big Flag Clan and their rivals into limbo. Why hello, Hatfields and McCoys.

Lo Meng is the stupid younger brother who escalates the war between the clans, Ti Lung tries to keep him in line (but fails miserably) and Sun Chien and Ko Fei provide some excellent secondary roles. As does the always great Miss Lily Lili.

And yet another memorable, crazy villain whose rotted Five Poison Palm is as much of a doozy as his blood drinking sword (Elric anyone?) I don't know how Ti Lung kept a straight face shooting this one, but boy is it fun. Really hope Celestial releases it digitally or on blu ray or something. Oh, it's based on a Gu Long novel that explains it. :p

what, romeo+juliette done by the SB... sounds amazing! :D

not watching many movies as of late but saw Friedkin's Cruising (another time...) with a friend of mine. Some good laughs were had. Probably one of my favorite sleazy killer movies.

I watch a lot of modern series ( Game of Thrones , flash , elementary ) and every time I admire the quality of the script and shooting
