Just watched Hidden Figures (2016)- outstanding story about African American women (engineers) at NASA in 1961. Outstanding story and imagery of the U.S. as a segregated country a mere 56 years ago.

Trilogy of Swordsmanship (1972) Again. I can see why all the young men lost their marbles about the lovely Shih Szu in that first story (well everyone but Yueh Hua that is. :p) The second story drags on way too long but the kicker in how the courtesans get revenge on their military lovers being condemned was fun. And third story, can't go wrong with Ti Lung, David Chiang and Li Ching sticking their spears up the government's...well you know. Lots of fun and tons of beefcake Ti fighting with a cangue again. Yes, please. :D This is an anthology film which works; I am generally not a fan of that format, but two out of three works for me.

We caught John Wick on the tube the other night. Was pleasantly surprised at how good a movie it was. Now I've got to see the second in the franchise.

OK. I should have known better… but my god this was awful.

The original in 1997 had a certain popcorn shovelling appeal (A Mac saves the world! Yay!)
But this sequel was just one long yawn. Piling one cliched Pelion on another hackneyed Ossa… relentless.

The fact that I am 20 years older probably has a lot to do with it. I just couldn't get over how artificially "perfectly gorgeous" all the lead actors were… I guess their roles didn't call for much acting, still… ridiculous.

Avatar (2009)- Collector's Extended Cut. Incredible photo realistic, science fiction blend of live action and CGI in an artificial world. This movie although 8 years old still represents the cutting edge. Your eyes tell you it's real, your brain knows it's not just cause there are no 9' tall Navi, animals like that or floating mountains. ;) The 90 sec sturmbeast hunt is worth the extra footage.

I'm laughing reading your post - and agree completely with you.

This is one of my complaints about many US movies, as well, and is one of the (many, many) reasons I far prefer British and European movies to those that come from the US.

The family caught "Batman:The Killing Joke" last night. Another of DC's R-rated animation features. While it was based on the original comic of the same name there were some significant changes. All in all it was a pretty good flick, but I, (as a comics fan) had some issues with where they took the story.

V for Vendetta (2005)- Impressive artistic parable for the dangers of facism/excessive authoritarianism in combination with a detention camp victim determined to turn his country around.

Free Fire, which had its moments and the cast is good but ... its probably something I'll forget I even saw tomorrow.

It is such a classic!
And an all time favorite.

I've started reading the graphic novel, which so far is close to the movie except Evee is out soliticing men when she get in trouble with the finger men. This movie is the perfect illustration of the power and strength of a movie over the written word even if there are illustrations. :)

I've never seen the film. I take it it's good?

V for Vendetta- Imo, yes very good, an alternatate reality story about an authoritarian Government in control of the U.K. and a former resident of an interment camp, whose goal is right the ship. Stylish, cleaver, artistic, and philosophical, an examination of the power of ideas.

This was originally a comic, then a graphic novel, so don't expect a concrete realism. The hero by virtue of being experimented on, attains some special kinetic abilities, i.e. he's fast, not super fast like a super hero, but fast enough and strong, his knives are deadly.

In the movie, the story of the life of an interned actress was moving, at least it moved me. :)
