I thought Passengers was just ok, too predictable and a little 2 dimensional for my liking. I also agree that the advertising of the film misrepresented the content with Passengers focus being relationships, not dire & disaster.

Indeed a oke movie, maybye a bit underestemated.

this sounds good, im a big 'the thing' fan

The Void is an indie film, with a lot of 80's horror references, horror for the fans of the genre. it's also worth noting there is an underlying Lovecraftian theme which is reflected throughout, with ensuing madness of all...

The Thing is a far more polished film, however The Void is a refreshing & brutal release compared to the typical deluge of PG 13's

Have you seen The Color out of Space by any chance? Was quite pumped when I first heard about it but read a review/comment in the newspaper which dissected it quite well and led to a serious turnoff on my part. Not sure what the bummer was exactly but it killed my expectiations.

No, however it's on my list, as I would like to see The Color out of Space for myself. Possession (1981) has some lovecraftian references, more an examination of relationships and madness, never the less disturbing. Possession is highly rated, however I would be hesitant to recommend for general audiences as it's very much an arthouse work of it's period.

Possession is a fascinating watch, if you can get into the film, if not you will be absolutely at a loss as to what you have just spent the last two hours of your life doing.

Have Sword Will Travel (1969) In which David Chiang's adorably deadly Robin Hood-like swordsman pisses off security escort Ti Lung and inadvertently flirts with Ti's finance Li Ching. And there are bad guys who want the loot the security escorts are attempting to deliver to the government. And DC's horse is awesome too.

This is so entertaining on so many levels as a pitch perfect, quasi-romantic wuxia but when stuff hits the fan, the red paint does not stop gushing. That finale is ridiculously brutal for 1969.

Now one of my most favorite Shaw Brothers films for many, many reasons, but mainly because its a terrific fantasy that really sucks you into the characters lives.

On the agenda for today: Logan...

Documentary on Janis Joplin - Janis: Little Girl Blue

I could watch this. Did you see the 1979 movie, The Rose starring Bette Midler, loosely based on Joplin's life?

Exactly. It was an ok relationship movie, but the deceptiveness of the advertising irritated me, like the mystery of why they woke up, what sinister plot was unhatching?? Surprise, there was none! :p

Possesion - It's already on my list. It's a fairly long list though..

Wasn't watching any movies lately myself (but binge-consumed The Walking Drama a lot) but finally saw 28 Days Later after a long long time again. Not as good as I remembered, undecided whether I want to see 28 Weeks Later (for the first time) anytime soon or not now.

Also finally purchased Demons II. :D Quite a fan of the first one, which got huge bonus points for playing in my old neighborhood in Berlin.

Want to see the version with mystery and fear Pandorum (2009) arguably a better SciFi Film, equally not one for the kiddies :) ironically some parallels exist, most certainly one would want to wake up in the Passengers universe, not Pandorum's :p

Seem to be drifting towards horror recently, 28 Days Later, is IMO much better than 28 Weeks Later, admittedly not watched either in a good while. Former I have, the latter disregard. Watched the Mist (2007) recently another unnerving classic, well recommended, with the touch of H.P. Lovecraft.

They employed deceptive advertising as a hook.

Yeah, I think I only watched part of the trailer when it came out, and I'd completely forgotten it. Maybe that helped.

Following the trend; Prince of Darkness (1987) from the hand of John Carpenter, not one of my favourites, equally not a bad watch if you enjoy the period & genre.

Prince of Darkness was a bit of a let down to be honest. Huge Carpenter fan here but it lacks the great finessed grittiness of his masterpieces imho - which is a pity because it could have been easily so much better.

Tend to agree, Prince of Darkness lacks in comparison to the directors best. Feels like some aspects of Big Trouble in Little China were carried over to Prince of Darkness which IMO didn't work, with the former being the more entertaining and upbeat, albeit a very different genre.

May revisit Ghosts of Mars, equally again not one of Carpenters best, I rather view as more light entertainment with a splash of gore; push you, slap me if you will :p

Saw Logan (2017) comments here. Overall thumbs up.

Saw some previews:
  • Furious 8: Car action so over the top I had to stifle a laugh.
  • Alien Covenant: Worth a peak.
  • Spiderman: The third frick'n remake for this franchise? Blah, and I don't like the new actor. Tobey McQuire left large shoes to fill.
  • Guardians of the Galaxy 2: Honestly I was not impressed by the first one.
  • Deadpool 2: The trailer looked like a comedy, and every other word was f***.

A rare bird The Wicker Man - Final Cut (1973), a very different take on horror. One must watch with the mindset of the period the film was shot in, a point well worth pondering. This cut is a little different in comparison to the theatrical & extended versions I have on DVD, requiring some comparison to truly see the difference in the details.

If you plan to watch The Wicker Man, the extended or Final Cut is the way to go, as both add so much more to the telling of the tale. The 2006 remake should simply be avoided at all costs, being a weak & pale comparison...

7.6 on IMDB and for good reason  Better "come clean" being a child of the mid sixties, "some" of the wacko stuff from the 70"s actually makes some sense to me :p

Yep, Ghosts of Mars is lying around on the shelf for quite some time now, but after the relatively utter disappointments I had with Prince.. and then followed by Vampires I thought I might give Carpenter a little pause for a while.

Wicker Man - an English friend of mine lend it to me (have to give it back, duh!..) when I was an my Italian 80s horror trip. Good movie but a bit of a rollercoaster ride regarding expectations. Don't think it was the director's cut.

DC is immediately recognisable by the inclusion of some 16mm (I think) footage, as that is all that exists, equally all the better for it. The theatrical release is therefor more polished, however IMHO inferior to the extended versions.

I really enjoyed "The Mist" and, sort of coincidentally, it seems that the TV series is about to come out soon as well (not sure how good that will be though):

I watched The Taking of Pelham One Two Three recently. It was very interesting being presented with such a different time(1974) and place(NYC). I found it very entertaining, because of how different(pacing, script, camera, characters, etc) it is compared to contemporary movies.

Curious how that compares to the more recent remake.

The ending of Prince of Darkness always messed with my head. The rest of it rather silly but...

Angel (1987) Utter piece of poop early HK girls with guns entry about a Charlie's Angels like team of men and women who go after a female headed drug ring. Not exciting, awful acting and action. Won't explore this subgenre further as I am not big on gun fu anyway.

What a way to waste legendary kicker Hwang Jang Lee.
