Million Dollar Baby. Watched it for the first time last night. Kinda conflicted... very very well made movie technically (plot, script, acting, directing, cinematography, etc). However, the ending was disappointing (felt like it was making a political statement or brow beating(which im pretty sick of these days)).

And even though Morgan Freeman played ... Morgan Freeman(again), the role was better suited for him than usual.

Overall, definitely recommended.

Jaws 2. Hard to think that film is 40 years old! I think 1 and 2 are great films for their time. The rest? Not so much!

I love 1. Not so much any of the rest.

Funny story, Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind, no sequels or prequels. Stands alone, perfectly, all by itself.
I wish Hollywood would take note.

I saw Dunkirk today. I gotta be honest, I thought the story telling(sequencing) was clunky and confusing. I really liked it but it took me awhile to figure out what was going on. :(

Bright (2017)- Netflix original movie, about a modern world where humans live side by side with elves, orcs, fairies, etc, and racial prejudice. Will Smith is a cop forced to work with an orc cop in LA and they stumble across a magic wand that this bad ass elf wants back. Is Will done as an actor? That’s a hint. ;)

Jaws 1 made me not want to swim in the ocean. :)

Going In Style (2017)

Not bad. It could have been better. Plot was somewhat cliche. On the other hand, it's great to see longtime actors on the screen again.

His namesake rakes in money. Just look at how much Netflix paid Adam Sandler. You think Sandler is worth the money he gets? I sure as hell don't.

My Grandad was at Dunkirk (and D-Day). He never spoke about either.
I'll wait for it to be on TV.

Totally get the not wanting to swim in the ocean thing! I recall holidays in the South of France where Jaws played heavily on my mind!

Re will smith? His best work was the fresh prince. It was all downhill from there!

I’d say he was in his prime for Independence Day and Men in Black. :)

I liked Alien Nation. The beginning of this movie struck me negatively, but then I settled in and it was watchable, with a B movie quality. I think the best mixing with the aliens movies was District 9.

Not a fan of Independence Day. A bit to Americancentric for my taste!

I agree about it’s Rah! Rah! aspect, and did not care for the President’s inspirational address nor the reference to Independence day, and even Randy Quaid’s drunk pilot role. But there were many other aspects of the story I liked, the premise, the visuals, Will Smith, Area 51, Brent Spiner, Judd Hirsh, and Jeff Goldblum. I could even suspend disbelief enough to believe that a virus could be designed to infect an advanced alien race’s computer systems, and that our primitive aircraft could prevail against advanced alien fighters. ;):)

Agreed about District 9. Shame it was overshadowed by Avatar.

I do like Indipendence Day too for some mindless action-comedy (guilty pleasure).

I watched the new Star Wars last week, and i've pretty much forgotten the plot, and i only remember a couple of scenes. Going forward, i might avoid any new movies from that universe.

Note: From here on out, I'm going to do my best to shut up about Star Wars.

BTW, I love Avatar. It's difficult to compare the two movies, but give them both thumbs up. :)

............

As a farmer he could have stayed at home. But he volunteered to go with the expeditionary force.
He only went abroad in WWII and later with the army to the Middle East.

Terrific story; I had friends whose grandparents never spoke of such things either, until someone (such as myself) was invited to dinner, and it would've been mentioned that I was interested in (or studying, or teaching) history, and sometimes, these characters might then start talking - spellbinding stuff; I've sat in houses where the kids and grandkids (the latter my own age) would say afterwards that they had never heard some of these stories.

I had an uncle by marriage - he married my mother's older sister - who was an RAF officer - actually, he was a pilot - with Coastal Command and who was killed in November 1943 with his entire crew.

When my aunt died in 2000, I was left his 'wings', his attache case, and his heavy gold band - his ring - which I still wear. I also have kept their photo album.

My aunt herself was an officer with the WAAFs, and was devastated by his death, although she did marry again, nearly thirty years later, to a chap (himself a widower) who had worked in Bletchley Park.

Even though I've seen enough movies, it's hard to really imagine myself in it. I just read about the Battle of Somme (France WW1, Fall of Giants novel) and that seemed like a nightmare, reinforced by the D Day movies. It's no wonder people emerged from that war psychologically damaged. I also remember George Peppard (The Blue Max) laying in the mud on a WWI battlefield and looking up at biplanes dueling in the air, as in that's the place for me...

Since my wife is forcing me to watch Revenge I am going to make her suffer through the movie Stargate tonight. I already told her once she finishes Revenge we are watching Stargate SG-1.

Gosh.

Why not each watch the movie you want to watch without "forcing" someone to watch something, or "suffering" the choices of the other?

It's not as bad as it sounds. Currently I am stationed in England and neither of us watch enough TV to justify getting satellite so we either stream TV and movies online or download them to her Mac Mini. An important point to add is we only brought 1 TV because of the difference in electricity between the US and England.

Fair enough.

My parents ended up with two TVs as their respective tastes re what they preferred to watch on television - especially in the early years - were so different; but they discussed what they watched with one another, and neither mocked the preferences of the other, even if, privately, they had little liking for it.

Bizarrely, they even ended up watching Match of the Day - simultaneously - on two separate TVs.

My great grandad was a flyer. He had a Tiger Moth until shortly before his death.
