Annihilation

Didn't do it for me. Too many unanswered questions and that last 15 minutes was weird as heck

Just watched "Bright" on Netflix. I really enjoyed it. It's a pretty typical decent Will Smith movie. Lots of action and intrigue. The movie was really reminiscent of "Alien Nation" but without aliens and using fantasy characters instead. Definitely worth the time to watch.

I dug this movie. This one seems to be split down the middle with you either liked it or you hated it and you wish the people who were involved would die a slow painful death.

I have watched it twice now and I like it a lot. Alien Nation is the first thing I thought of when I saw it also. I can't wait to see what they do with part 2. I am hoping we get to see how it all came about.

I disliked Sin City because of the styilized CGI which has always turned me off. There may be exceptions, but usually I want CGI which is indistinguishable from reality, where the only reason i know something is not real is my knowledge, not my eyes. :)

I liked The Crow, but there too the CGI was a hinderance to my enjoyment.

Say what! You didn't like Sin City! I understand the CGI comment, but I loved the comic book and boy the movie is almost a frame for frame shot of the book. If you haven't already check out the comic book, there is a trade paperback version of it so you can get it all in one helping. I actually picked up the "Big Damn book of Sin City" and yeah it is pretty damn big!

The second Sin city was just ok, this goes for the book and the movie.

All is good. :) I never read the comic so I was not vested in the story in advance. I did not want to see an animated comic.

LOL... The book is actually pretty good, at least I thought so. You can pick it up pretty cheap if you are interested. Another one of his movies that was pretty spot on was "300". That too is almost a frame for frame shot of the book and I felt it carried over pretty nicely. Yes there was a lot of CG in 300, but I still liked it.

I disliked 300 too for the same CGI reason. :)

The comic is so hyper-stylized, the look and feel are integral to the whole experience - so this was a case where I was glad they made a design decision to stick very closely to the original source art direction.

Now 300 is an excellent movie.

Happy Death Day - this was a lot of fun for a teen-y horror film. Good writing and acting from the lead actress. Definitely recommended.

Roman J. Israel, Esq - disappointing. Denzel Washington was good but the film is pretty slim on convictions of why things go the way they do. It does not work. This kind of movie would have been called great in 1992.

Revolt - 2017

Liked this one, certainly for fans of the genre. Certainly a lot better than some big budget attempts as SciFi, gritty in places and well grounded, nor does the film "hold your hand" which I personally like. The first and second acts really hold up, third act, becoming ever more clichéd.

I also liked the premise of the story, although as ever it could have been executed better. If you liked Skyline (2010), Battle: Los Angeles (2011), Oblivion (2013), Kill Command/Identify (2016) and the likes you'll likely enjoy Revolt, I'd give the film a solid 6 - 6.5, admittedly I'm a SciFi fan, so maybe a little more forgiving :p basically an ok watch :)

Just finished "Coco". What a great movie, actually one of our favorite Pixar movies right behind 'The Incredibles'. Pulls on a lot of strings and boy the last few minutes really hit us in the feels.

Big ole thumbs up!

Enlight of the Oscars tomorrow, tried to pull up Shape of Water with the most nominations, for viewing. Sly bastards, it’s not available to rent till March 13. :(:p

When i left the cinema i was pretty confused, with more questions than answers. It didnt help that the "pay off" at the end made no sense. But i couldnt get it out of my mind.... like a puzzle you're trying to solve. FWIW, I have to admit that i had to look it up on YouTube and i found a great explanation.

In other news, i'm a Paul Thomas Anderson superfan, and am cautiously optimistic for Phantom Thread; his first movie set outside California.

Based on last night’s viewing of the Oscars, I want to see The Shape of Water and Get Out. I’ll probably watch Mudbound and Three Billboards.

Get Out was OUT-standing! Great little fun horrorflic that got the black humour, no pun intended, just about perfect. Will watch that more than once that's for sure.
