I'd add Cronos, del Toro's first feature. GdT is hit and miss for me too (mostly miss). That said, I respect him immensely for bringing fantasy and horror into stories that would otherwise be bleak dramas. I am happy he won Best Director for The Shape of Water, but like most Oscar nominated films, I have no desire to see it.

Hmm, there have been some pretty fantastic films that were Oscar nominated, across a pretty wide range of genres too. I know based on your posting the type of movies you tend to like, but I wouldn't avoid a film just because it's "critically popular" otherwise if you're really into film, you're missing out. I was curious, so I looked at the 2010s Oscar noms list on Wikipedia, and just pulling out a few examples:

Inception
Toy Story 3
The Social Network
Django Unchained
American Hustle
Dallas Buyers Club
Her
Nebraska
The Grand Budapest Hotel
The Imitation Game
Whiplash
Mad Max: Fury Road
The Martian
Arrival

Hell or High Water
Get Out
Lady Bird

Keep in mind, I'm also a big fan of foreign films, indie and subversive anti-industry material, love me some Shaw Bros too :)

These are movies that I've seen at least once, would highly recommend, and in bold are ones that we [usually own and] have watched at least 5+ times. We've got action/sci-fi, animated/kids, horror, black comedy, drama, lots of overlap, all ranges of budget, etc. :)

It's all good. It's nice that there is something for everyone. And it's good that the academy is becoming a bit more open toward genre films these days.

Regarding that list, I've seen some of them; I liked Get Out and Arrival. The rest, not so much (between cast, crews and storylines, just not my thing).

Thanks though.

We're stoked to see this, really want to catch it at the theater (which I'm sure adds an extra layer of ~spookiness~)
I’ve never been in a theater where everybody was that quiet. The film never lets up! I will say no more. Tell me what u think after u catch it.

del Toro, the director has a mixed track record as far as what I’ve liked. The first Hellboy was fantastic. The second Hellboy, was too much been there done that. Pacific Rim for which he gets a writing credit was pretty good. Pan’s Labyrinth was intriguing, but saw some HB fantasy elements in its art work. The Strain which flashed his name was uneven. Honestly, The Shape of Water looks drab, I really dislike the atmosphere from the previews especially if it’s an artistic choice to represent the 50’s. I’m going to stream this eventually.

What do you guys think if that project of Halo movie had gone foward? Hit or miss?

For me visually it would be fantastic. Story i don't know.

American Made with Tom Cruise.

Its one of those rise and fall movies. I got bored when Cruise's character started heading down.

You could miss this movie and be okay with life.

Saw Ready Player One over the weekend and really like it. Super fun story with an engaging plot. And, let's not forget the slight commentary on the present state of our escapism focused culture.
I saw it last night. I disagree with the recommendation that we spend some of our time in the real world. I'd rather spend it at MacRumors!

I thought it was excellent. The entire cast delivers first rate performances, and I was completely engrossed by the characters and the world they inhabited from start to finish. From a purely aesthetic standpoint it’s absolutely gorgeous to look at. Paul Thomas Anderson is one of the few directors left who still shoots in actual film, and it makes this movie look and feel like a timeless classic already. One of his best, in my opinion.

PT is my favorite director. Im cautiously optimistic for this one... being his first foray outside California.

It's great but super weird.

Saw Gemini. Good for the first 2/3, then it got equally as bad. All-around okay.

I like A Quiet Place. It's great for the scares if lacking some real substance.

Filled one of my blindspots. I absolutely loved Lost in Translation.

This is my all time favourite movie right now and one I'm about to watch.
