I think I have seen about 7 movies in the last 8 months that were good movies. The rest have been what you say is subpar. Are you debating getting movie pass?
I’m considering it, as compared to our movie going habits, which is to go to the theater every couple of months, if that. And when we do go, in more cases than not, we are disappointed.

Yeah, I justified it by saying I go once a month anyways. If I only go once a month, it’s paid for it’s self. Usually I go at least twice. Now with MoviePass, I have gone about once a weekend. No loss for me if the movie sucks lol. Just some time I guess.

Yesterday evening I made the mistake of watching The Killing of the Sacred Deer (2017), directed by Yorgos Lanthimos. It wasn't a mistake because the film is bad (it's actually the exact opposite of that), but for the first time in a long while this was a film that stuck with me in an intense way. The way the film tells the story, and the score in particular, has made, I can only assume, a long lasting effect on me.

I really liked the director's previous film, The Lobster (2015), and I'm glad he's sticking with Colin Farrell. I've never thought of the man as untalented, but it seems he really shines in the hands of the right director. That is, if one is willing to overlook the fact that in TKotSD with the beard he looks just like a mix between Mel Gibson and Saddam Hussein.

I'd suggest watching the film without reading anything about it beforehand, as a bunch of the reviews I've read seem to be filled with spoilers of varying degrees.

I guess I'm going to have to watch the Airplane-movies back to back now, just to get some much needed levity.

I'd have enjoyed it more if they didn't try to make it feel like it was shot in a camcorder with no image stabalization.

Avengers Infinity War. I liked it. Had serious issues with Thanos (I never liked the character anyway). Given the source material, I will not piss poo the screenwriters or the directors. They had some pretty tricky choices to make and took risks. I'll most likely see it again for the moments I loved.

One favorite character did something that made people boo, but I understood his intention (especially since he laid it out just before it happened). This film makes me want a fourth Thor movie immediately.
Peter Dinklage's giant dwarf king Eitri was my most favorite character in the whole thing. I'd totally dig it seeing a movie with Eitri, Thor, Rocket and Groot chumming around, building weapons, and kicking butt. To wit, I still dislike most of the Guardians, but I thought those two were used quite well in this movie.

Oh and stay for the post credits scene, it is such a wink to the actor who is in it.

Leaving Las Vegas(1995).

Watched it for the first time tonight. Such a wonderfully different film. Great characters, great performances(Cage surprised me), awesome score/soundtrack. Highly recommended.

Saw The Last Jedi yesterday for the first time - what an epic letdown!! :D Terrible and utterly disjointed WTF-kind-of-movie from start to finish.

Don't think I care at all for what's coming next - at least Micky Mouse gave us Rogue One so there is that.

In my dreams they would have made the Thrawn Trilogy back in the days...

So I might not recommend MoviePass any longer. Not sure if you have seen the changes, but the only plans that are still worth it are the $9.95 a month original or the $7.95 a month and pay for the whole year. The new plan of paying for 3 month up front for $9.95 with a limited of 4 movies a month is starting to not make it worth it. Unless you think you will only want to see 4 movies in a month, then maybe. Also you can’t see a movie twice anymore.

My $9.95 a month on the original is still worth it even if I can’t see a movie twice. I just don’t ever want to loss it. If they change the plan much more though, I will consider canceling.

Glad I never joined up. I suspected they would pull something like this eventually. Not worth it then. I may just rejoin AMC stubs because in certain theatres, movies are $5 on Tuesdays. I do not know what other stipulations there are for that $5 Tuesday price outside of membership. That alone would make me go the movies more than the 2-4x a year I go.

It’s still worth it for me. I have the original $9.95 and I can see as many movies as I want. Still worth it, just not a fan of not being able to see a movie twice. I say the new plan isn’t worth it.

I don’t know much about the AMC stub thing, but it seems the theaters are getting into the loyalty thing these days. It’s all fine, but is it a huge benefit? MoviePass and the theaters should have teamed up from the beginning rather then fighting. Because of MoviePass, I am at the theater way more the I ever have, and I always get something at the theater in terms of food or drink. They are making more money off of me then they ever have. As for the greedy movie studios, they should be happy too. I am watching more of the subpar movies they put out then I ever did. Again making them more money. If they ruin MoviePass, I will pretty much stop going to the theater at all. Maybe for one or two movies a year and that’s it. It’s not worth $15 to see a movie. Why do they think attendance has been declining? People don’t see the value in it anymore. MoviePass changed all that for me.

I understand that completely. For me, there isn't a lot worth seeing. I am glad MoviePass works for you and others. I do not have the patience to go through all of those rules and stuff. It's all good. :)

Totally understand that too. Good choice as it’s not for everyone. If I was not single and had no kids, I don’t know that it would be worth it. Being single gives me time to go pretty much anytime I want on the weekends. I know for most it might not be worth it.

:)

I never bothered given how awful The Force Awakens was. Give me my Ewan as Obi-Wan movie and I will politely bow out after that.

Well at least Disney knows what to do with Marvel.

I liked The Blair Witch Project, both the first and the second part, though the first one was better as usual.
I regard the BWP as a tense movie that would have been pretty good if not destroyed by the home movie effect which was so distracting and nauseating physically.

It (Last Jedi) compliments The Force Awakens quite nicely.

How best to describe it, when calculated commercialization and lack of original ideas blatantly falls back on a retread and mediocrity for the score! If I understand it right, Mark Hammel hated what they did to Luke Skywalker. I can relate. :(

Wouldn't know - Marvel is more hit n miss than ever for me, so I mostly stay away nowadays. The Homecoming Spidey movie - I think it was Disney - was a parody (much like the Last Jedi if I think about it) and a bad one at that. Maybe I got tired of Supre-Hero blockbuster flics, dunno. I did like Logan though (and you didn't if I recall correctly ;))..but maybe it's just that I don't have much time nowadays anyway. The Black Panther movie sounded insteresting though.

As with TFA, I thought it could go both ways in retrospect - either become to the new trilogy what RotJ was to the original one (by general lesser standards if you know what I mean). But nope. Seems like Rogue One was a fluke.

McGregor and Liam Neeson were quite awesome in retrospect. Unfortunately they were the only thing the Prequels had going for them - except a somewhat consistent script. Something that can't be said for the new ones bar RO. Sad.

Watched Dracula's Daugther ('36) yesterday. Enjoyable and dreamy.

Marvel, fair enough. I skip a lot of super hero films, but, I have been largely happy in how three favorite Marvel characters are being handled so I see those films. It took long enough for Thor, but he is finally ‘worthy’ to me.:)

Re: Logan, did not like. The actress who was X-23 was terrific though. I am not a fan of her character in the comics, but I would not object to this girl playing her in future movies.

I love Ewan in the Prequels - best thing to happen to SW in the last two decades imo. Though I have warmed up to Donnie Yen :p Right now, looks like Rogue One was a fluke.

@Huntn - sadly, Mark was ‘forced’ to backtrack on those comments.

Maybe, hopefully the Hans Solo movie will be a fluke too. :)

Did either of you @kazmac, @twietee enjoy the Guardians of the Galaxy vol 1 movie? My feelings won’t be hurt if you did not. :)

Nope. :D

Imho it was at least better than the Avengers hotchpotch if that helps. But nearly not good enough that I'd consider watching Vol.2.. :D
The jokes fall flat and the action looked samey. Characters? Too much cardboard and not enough soul. Storyline...think I forgot it ;)

But since millions of people clearly enjoy it I won't complain. I for one like the blockbuster stuff from the 90s much better - they were silly too but sympathetic and less bold at that. Indiana Jones, Sta Wars, Batman - that sort of stuff.

There is not an Avenger movie I’ve liked. Honestly I did not appreciate GotGv1 until I watched it a second time. I agree that many can use as much soul as they can find. What Marvel movies if any have you liked?

I think I watched the first two Avenger movies and will glady forget about them. Not even sure what the first one was about actually.. edit: the first one had Loki (who I did enjoy tbh but the rest was forgettable) and the second was with that Ultron crap, right?

Marvel movies I'd watch again:

The first Iron Man movie - that was totally fresh at the times and RDjr is just cool.
The Hulk movie by Ang Lee and with Eric Bana was cool. Although I may be the only one who likes it.
Capt. America Winter Soldier was nice.
Logan was good.

The latest X-Men stuff was at least good enough to keep me wanting to watch Apocalypse.
Doc Strange was entertaining - but I wouldn't watch it again.

And then there is Netflix. :D Punisher (10/10) and Daredevil (8/10) were great and although I haven't finished Jessica Jones S2 I do think season two quite nice - especially considering that I almost got angry while watching S1.. ;)
