Has this been mentioned recently? I might have to see it in the theater. :)

Alita: Battle Angel
Saw it, thumbs up, comments here: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/cgi-in-movies-discussion.2143862/page-3#post-27101005

I also saw 2 previews today:
The new Hellboy. My impression is no one can beat Ron Perlman and I highly doubt it will match the atmosphere of the original movie, which I highly recommend. And David Harbour as a Hellboy looks wierd, maybe because they had to give him a big chin? :)

The second one is The Dark Phoenix, the Jean Gray X-Man story that I always wanted to be made, but what has come before it, I am fearful at this point that it can live up to my expectations.

Not helping is this article: https://wegotthiscovered.com/movies/x-men-dark-phoenix-said-bad-fantastic-four-reboot/

Hellboy (2004)
A masterpiece for this genre, atmosphere and action, supernatural, music, visuals, and subtle humor, beginning with the Nazi’s interest in the occult, which brings Hellboy into our world. The beginning sequence is great. :)

Ron Perlman was so perfectly cast, I can’t imagine anyone else playing him. Several iconic characters included in this story. David Hyde Pierce has an uncredited role as the voice of Abe Sapien. One of Guillermo del Toro’s best movies.

In the coldest regions of space, the monstrous entities Ogden Jahad - The Seven God’s of Chaos slumber in their crystal prison, waiting to reclaim Earth...and burn the heavens.

Finally received the DVD for "Atomic Cafe" from Netflix. It was a really interesting look at the Atomic Age's beginnings and the reactions to the Bomb and Cold War. Lots of footage from propaganda, Civil Defense and military films from the era. All overlaid with a soundtrack of atom bomb related tunes. Lots of nuclear test footage and outright lies on the part of the military and government. Definitely worth a watch if you have an interest in the era.

Chappaquiddick(2017)
Very well made movie. Pacing was good, camera work spot on, sets were great, script was well written and the acting was very good too. The story was new to me and the filmmakers gave it a lot more depth than i expected (internal family dynamics). While i’m sure the movie has its own spin on the story, i thought it did so with a decent degree of balance. Highly recommended if you’re in the mood for a slow burn political drama.

PS> thanks to whoever mentioned this movie earlier on in this thread!

I like him in that Netflix cattle show with the kid from that retro show.

I don’t know it. I have Netflix but only because my daughter uses it at her home. I forgot my username and pw.

@pachyderm - it’s a good story, nicely written and acted. I didn’t finish it last night but will today. Btw - I like the score too. Lots of good in it in my eyes. Thanks once more.

Too brief. Could you please expand? Lolol.

I'd go shorter but I might get banned. You of all people asking me to elaborate. :D

EDIT:

[I'm watching a "live" movie today instead of cinematic fare. Glancing in more often at the Berry College eagles' nest. Egg One is a bit overdue to hatch, Egg Two is three days behind so its occupant should also be hatching or at least trying to hatch... and yet mom and pop are still turning and minding them, mostly as if they haven't heard any or anyway many pipping or chirping noises from imminent hatchlings. So far that pair has mostly hatched two eggs except for one year, and last year they lost a nestling when it got way too near nest-edge and then fell out, was too young to fly, didn't survive the 100 foot fall. Hoping for a better outcome this year but 40 days for Egg One is at far far end of expected range for a hatch.]

Barring any excitement in that movie.... I'm thinking of watching Roma on Netflix later this evening.

I knew it! I just knew it! I knew your fingers were itchy!

I really need to text my daughter for my username and pw to Netflix.

I prefer older genre films because there was always some great characters and characterization going on. Even if the story was awful, you could find enjoyment in the performances or vice versa. Story could be fun, characters were not, but still worth seeing.

I generally skewer toward movies that are my age or slightly younger because of the above, or as was already mentioned, Did they really just do that? I say that a lot while watching Italian, Spanish, U.K., American, and Asian genre movies from the ‘60s to the early ‘80s. Even as practical FX took over, the what the? element remains.

V for Vendetta (2005)- One of the best movies of the 21st Century. Hugo Weaving’s tour de force as V the terrorist whose goal is a liberate an alternate reality facist U.K. Great cast.

Just finished Batman: The Movie (1966) for probably the hundredth time. I seem to never get tired of this one, and with (among other great stuff) cinematographic vision and wizardry like this, how could I?

IMDb Trivia section said:
Scenes shot in the arch-criminals' headquarters lair were filmed in a dutch angle. This was intentional and was meant to show that the four villains (Catwoman, Penguin, Joker, and Riddler) were crooked.

The Straight Story (1999) by David Lynch. Quite a wonderful, poignant movie. A long meditation on aging, love, and death. Wonderful portrayal by Richard Farnsworth - then diagnosed with untreatable cancer and dying - who would later end his own life with a gunshot. If anything the theme reminded me a bit of Bergman's Wild Strawberries.
For those who are afraid of Lynch's movies, this one is very straightforward, with a clear plot, and nothing too weird happening.
Highly recommended.

A great film, indeed. I still remember the first time I saw this, I must have spent about a week scratching my head and thinking what I missed about it having just recently seen Lost Highway, Mulholland Drive and Eraserhead before this one and thus on some level comparing all four to one another.

I'm glad the confusion eventually wore off, as this is indeed great in it's own right.
