Just finished Triple Frontier (2019) on Netflix.

A bit divided on this one. There was a lot of good stuff in it, but it was a bit too long. The actors did a good job, and whoever was in charge of the music deserves an honorable mention. CCR, Fleetwood Mac, Bob Dylan etc., you really can't go wrong with these kinds of artists.

The story was good, but ultimately went in a different direction than what I had imagined going in. Which can be a good thing, need to think about it a bit more. This was the first time in a good while that I went in to a film without so much as watching a trailer, and I think I need to start doing that more. There were even a few twists that I definitely didin't see coming, which is always nice.

All in all an entertaining couple of hours.

Forgot to post this, but Darkest Hour gets a 9 out of 10 from me. Excellent film. Oldman hit it out of the park. Treasure he is.

Justice League

Just as Clark Kent comes back from the dead, Wonder Woman says “he’s back” and my son cut a huge fart.

That pretty much sums up how I feel about JL.

Green Book (2018)- Good story based on a true story, set in early 1960s about an Italian American bouncer from NYC who takes a job as chauffeur and security for an African American piano virtuoso on a tour of the US including the South, and their relationship that develops. Enjoyable story.

Wedding Crashers (2005)- Favorite comedy. Two divorse mediators have a hobby, crashing weddings for partying, free drinks, and women aroused by wedding nuptials. At the wedding of the daughter of the US Secretary of the Treasury, they get in over their heads and fall for his other two daughters. Where’s my little friend? He’s tired. ;)

Vince Vaughn, Owen Wilson, Christopher Walken, Henry Gibson, Jane Seymour, and Bradley Cooper. Outstanding comedy, if you appreciate Vince Vaughn’s sexually drenched monologs, and a couple short drabs of Will Ferrell in psycho mode. :)

I don’t care for Will Ferrell as a rule, but I like his character playing Megamind.

I watched Darren Aronofsky's mother! (2017) last night. Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem star as a woman and a man, and the story takes place in their remote, newly renovated house that, sometime in the past, suffered a devastating fire. One day a strange man (Ed Harris) arrives looking for a room to stay in, and despite the woman's reluctance they agree to let him stay for a while.

An intriguing film. A bit heavy handed on the symbolism and metaphors at times, but just strange enough to keep you (or at least me) interested for the duration of 2 hours. The absence of a traditional score (one was composed by the late great Jóhan Jóhannsson but ultimately scrapped in favor of using general sound design to create the mood) was a nice touch, and something I didin't even notice until the second half of the film. It was just one of those things you can't quite put your finger on but notice none the less.

Interesting stuff. Entertaining? Not really (at least in the traditional sense), but still interesting.

Heard many things about this controversial movie. I might watch it...

I'm kind of hesitant to really recommend it, but at the same time, the more I think about it, I don't think that the two hours I spent watching it were wasted in any sense of the word.

After reading some reviews about it, it sure seems to be a polarizing film, which I completely understand.

Great comedy if you ask me. Will Ferrell's character is so pathetic, I love him! ;)

I did that a few times in university with friends. This was a long time before the internet was commonplace and at a time when cell phones were still absurdly expensive. Good times.

Halloween (2018)

Infinitely superior to the couple of Halloween-films made before this one (I'm looking at you, Mr. Zombie), but unsurprisingly still doesn't hold a candle to the original one from 1978, to which this is a direct sequel. A bunch of stuff from the sequels produced before this one has obviously been retconned into oblivion, and honestly I don't really have much of a problem with that (I realize I might get tarred and feathered for saying this, but so be it).

Michael Myers (or the The Shape) has always been one of my favorite film "villains", and the one portrayed here by James Jude Courtney was not bad. Obviously there's only so much an actor can do while wearing dark overalls and a mask for most of the film, but still, it worked well. There were some twists, some of them good and some pretty bad. The score was great, and most of the actors did a fine job.

Plenty of nods to other installments of the series, so I think a second viewing is in order to try to catch them all.

Just signed up again with Netflix.
What should I watch?
I like dramas, Thrillers and sci-fi. Comedy not so much.
Just finished "The Umbrella Academy". it was ok.
I hear The Crown is good so I put it on My List.
What else?

Really? It left me cold… and the whole Churchill as man of the people diving down into the Tube to sit in awe of Vox Populi…

Gary Oldman is great though — in most films. I look forward to his reprise of George Smiley soon.

Any evil refrigerators? ;)

Not really his thing though is it? :p

I just unsubbed from Netflix… the offerings are paltry — well to my tastes at least. YMMV though. :)

Went to the theatre and saw "Captain Marvel" with the family. Yet another great Marvel film. It was truly an enjoyable addition to the Marvel movies family. It teed up everything for "The Avengers:Endgame" next month. If you like Marvel movies you'll like this one!

I’m trying to watch or re-watch many of them. Hopefully I’ll see “Captain Marvel” this week.

See now you made me want to watch that one again. And that's a feeling I haven't really had since I first saw the film! Maybe the scars have healed and the time is ripe for another viewing.

Excellent point. It is not.
Requiem for a Dream is an excellent film though, but I share your emotions. It is a very disturbing descent nto some godawful Coney Island abyss…
But it is a well crafted and acted piece of work.

This weekend's viewing.

Let's get the bad out of the way first.

A remake of the classic Rocky Horror Picture Show.
89-og.jpg

I am a great RHPS fan… ever since I first saw it on video soon after release.
So many tunes and one-liners. Sheer trashy outrageousness, all done on a budget thinner than Tim Curry's torn fishnets. Just brilliant…

BUT!
Along comes Fox's 2017 remake…

I hoped it would be at least entertaining. Alas… It is just flat. I cannot imagine anyone new to the musical being shocked by it as the first one did previous generations.

The opening "Science Fiction - Double Feature" was fine. Best of the film actually.
Comedic timing out by a mile, sure there were some decent voices in there, "but no… muscle". Laverne Cox as Frank-n-Furter… *sigh* "I can make you a man!" loses all sense of camp irony when sung by a woman. Double entendres galore, but delivered by a cast who probably didn't understand what they were implying. All toned down and made very "family friendly." What's the point? Anyway. Not enjoyable.
And casting Tim Curry, post stroke, in a wheelchair, slurred and wooden as Narrator/Criminologist was just in poor taste.

*******************

Best of the lot was The Epic of Everest.
epic-of-everest-1924-bfi-poster-001-1000x750.jpg

1924 film made during Mallory and Irvine's attempt on Everest. Astonishing scenes of life in Tibet. The hopes and fears of the expedition as they near the Mother Goddess of the Earth… massive and ominous. The growing realisation that Mallory and Irvine have died.

The restoration of the film is a great success and really allows, the early use of colour and magnification to shine. Combined with an evocative music score.

Highly recommended.

And then just for laughs, Alien followed by Aliens last night. By now, after so many revisits, we know all the lines, but Jones still jump scares me… every time. Excellent feline actor. :)

Wholeheartedly agreed. The score by Clint Mansell & Kronos Quartet is exquisite as well. Lux Aeterna will never not give me chills no matter how often I listen to it.

Agree. So often the musical score makes (or breaks) a film.

Also Kronos Quartet. I don't think they have ever recorded a non-despairing and dark album. :)
