All Dogs Go To Heaven(1989)
An 'almost forgotten' classic animated movie. A lot darker than I remembered.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest(2006)
Theatrical, witty and entertaining. Good acting all around. Not as great as the first, but not that far off. Bill Nighy as Davy Joes was particularly good.

First was absolutely ok, what concerns Alita, I have mixed feelings. Storyline is corrupted, but the CGI was perfect.
Is that statement based on the the original source material? If so, I’d like to hear more.

I think the big critique about this movie is not that it is not visually impressive and entertaining, but that the story focuses on the wonder of Alita rediscovering herself and the dangerous environment she finds herself reawakened in, includes some impressive action sequences, but does not progress the story enough for a single movie. I can’t say this observation makes the movie bad per say, but the story feels half told as if this is part 1 of a two part mini-series.

Two different reviews:

On the whole, critics took issue with lack of exposition and reliance on CGI for storytelling.
The CGI is impressive according to movie reviews, but can't make up for haphazard storytelling.

I watched Darren Aronofsky's mother! (2017) last night. Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem star as a woman and a man, and the story takes place in their remote, newly renovated house that, sometime in the past, suffered a devastating fire. One day a strange man (Ed Harris) arrives looking for a room to stay in, and despite the woman's reluctance they agree to let him stay for a while.

An intriguing film. A bit heavy handed on the symbolism and metaphors at times, but just strange enough to keep you (or at least me) interested for the duration of 2 hours. The absence of a traditional score (one was composed by the late great Jóhan Jóhannsson but ultimately scrapped in favor of using general sound design to create the mood) was a nice touch, and something I didin't even notice until the second half of the film. It was just one of those things you can't quite put your finger on but notice none the less.

Interesting stuff. Entertaining? Not really (at least in the traditional sense), but still interesting.
I can certainly understand the polarizing reviews. To be honest, I was so lost while watching this in the theater. Confused, uncomfortable, overwhelmed... I heard that if you haven't figured it out by the end, a clue comes up during the credits (in the characters' names). Once I saw it, it all clicked for me right then, like a lightbulb moment. A lot of movies are utterly forgettable. This one, I honestly spent the next few days thinking about. Watched it a couple more times after it released on blu-ray, and enjoyed it more each time.

Triple Frontier on Netflix. Not very good but just good enough for a netflix-kill-few-hours movie. Surprised Ben Aflek is in it. Thought his career was better than this.

Triple Frontier (2019)- Netflix film about former Special Forces soldiers who execute a heist against a drug lord. The previews looked good, but the story was eh. I like Oscar Isaac from his Ex Machina performance, but he could not save it. Ben Affleck was mediocre.

yeah, but you get to see him get shot in the head so that was neat

Music and Lyrics. I'm not sure how I missed this one back in the day, but what a hoot! They're not Wham!, they're Pop!...

Nice little rom-com.

Us (2019) by Jordan Peele.

It was good. Debating whether or not it was better than Get Out, but in any case quality stuff. The cast is really great and talented, both the adults and the kids. The story is good as well, and there are a couple of very nice twists. Great music and sound design as well.

If you like horror/thrillers, I'd recommend checking this one out.

edit: And now there's Con Air on the TV! 'Tis a good evening.

Completely agree. Watched it the other day and my feeling was - meh.

Saw US, which I was not a fan of. Scripting was clunky and the overall conclusions it made had too many holes. It tries to be funny and sometimes succeeds. None of it was scary. Its weird that this feels like more of a first film than Get Out because of such bad scripting.

The more I think about it, the more (small, sometimes bordering on insignificant) flaws I'm coming up with. All in all I'd still say I was entertained, the humor mostly worked, and the rest goes in tags.

While I liked the twist of what turned out to be happening in the film, I didn't much care for the explanation of why what was happening was happening. By that I mean that the scene where Red explains everything to Adelaide could have been scrapped, or at least written with a bit more ambiguity. One thing I liked when compared to Get Out was that although there was a "social message", this one felt more layered, as in there can be several interpretations of the film and what it's supposed to be saying. Regarding the scare-value, this one was, in my humble opinion, definitely more in the vein of the "traditional horror (/ home invasion) film" than Get Out. So Us wasn't necessarily scary, but the atmosphere was tense emphasized with great sound design.

All this to say I guess I liked it better than you did, but it's always nice to read other's opinions! I guess there could be a longer discussion about actually scary horror films, but this thread probably isn't it.

US.

It was enjoyable. A lot of laughing and clapping in the theater. There were a few scary scenes especially the opening one. (Don’t be late) but most was just kind of creepy more than scary. I liked that it wasn’t political just a good old fashioned home invasion movie with a twist or two.

Alpha (2018)
A cartoonish type movie which I might have liked more were I ten years old. But.... nice doggie.

Watched "Hotel Artemis". Good cast and an interesting movie. Not great cinema, but not a bad movie. 3 out of 5 stars. I'm a Jodie Foster fan and I like Dave Bautista.
