The Assassins (2012) Very thoughtful and human take on the warlord Cao Cao, the King/Lord of Wei. Chow Yun Fat just steals the entire movie as this grandmaster of scheming and strategies. This is a drama with very little action (though the trampoline-like ropes the assassination team use to try to infiltrate and murder the Lord of Wei are really quite cool. I felt like I was watching an updated take on Five Elements Ninjas in that moment).

Cool fell out of every pour when he played all those slick assassins, cops and triads for John Woo and others, but give Chow space in a period role and he's even better.

The future Mulan (Liu Yifei) of Disney's upcoming live action take is also in this film as the leading lady (and one of the two title characters). She's solid when not in the same scenes as Chow.

This was a nice surprise and a solid period drama for me.

The VVitch (2015) I quite enjoyed this. Glad I bought it. Very thoughtful and slightly unnerving tale of a Puritan family who leave their colony to go off the grid and boy do they. Trying to make a farm life at the edge of a creepy forest, bad things start happening to this family and all of it falls onto the shoulders of the eldest daughter, Thomasin. Though I would have preferred if it was flipped, so the eldest son Caleb was the scapegoat.

Speaking of goats, Black Phillip was great fun. I was particularly impressed with writer/director Robert Eggers research and having his English actors speak the actual old English of 1630s New England. Bring on The Lighthouse, I think that's going to be nuts.

---

Spider-Man Far From Home. Nope. Not feeling it. Except for the first mid credits scene which is brilliant, this did not interest me at all. Everything I liked about the first Spidey solo movie was absent here (No-one worthy of Michael Keaton). I just got the feeling that everyone was trying way too hard to make this one work.

---

Suspiria (2017) No. Just no. The less I say the better, but Chloe Grace Moritz and a hilariously goofy homage to Hellraiser's Butterball cenobite were the only good things about it. That has nothing to do with this trying to remake Dario Argento's original. It's just an incoherent mess that to be a horror movie and doesn't quite become one until late in the third act. For me not to believe Tilda Swinton as a character, much less all three she plays in this speaks volumes.

Godzilla (1954) Needs more Godzilla.

What can I say? If you haven’t seen it, this is an excellent sci-fi film [This is probably my 7th viewing of this film.]. Plot synopsis-It’s the year 2057, the sun is dying and there’s a crew that is set in space to launch a payload to help reignite the sun. Along the way, there are different courses of actions that deviate their plan and the overall mission.

Couple of things worth noting:

Chris Evans (Captain America) is probably one of his best films I’ve seen him in. He absolutely has a commanding presence and it’s one of his more serious roles, ‘he steals the show’. Cillian Murphy (Inception/28 Days later) is also very good, I think this movie really advocated his career moving forward for other major films. Rose Byrne does also a really nice job in the movie, good female lead role. One of my all-time favorite sci-fi movies, ever.

But, I have to say, musical scores as I mentioned before, really can tie the viewer in. This movie has one of the best musical scores I’ve ever heard. It’s also been dubbed over many times as ‘motivational music’.

Essentially it’s about A league of female
Soldiers that enter the ‘shimmer’, which basically is this spherical realm that is surrounding the southern coast line, but anyone that really enters it, never comes out of it, except for one man (Oscar Issac) and his wife is elected to enter the shimmer to find out what happened to the previous troops and how to stop the shimmer from expanding.

Anyways......

Yeah, this is a very different type of sci-fi movie. And it to be honest with you, I’m probably going to have to watch it again, as there’s a lot of unanswered questions I have, #1.) Plot points that don’t exactly make sense,# 2.)There is a far deeper meaning to this movie then probably most viewers will pick up on initially the first time they watch this, I found myself at First disinterested, and then oddly intrigued wanting to watch more as the film progressed.

I’ve watched quite a few sci-fi films, as that’s what I prefer in that genre, but this is about as strange as it gets, and I would rank ‘Under the skin’ with Scarlett Johansson being right up there on the ‘weirdness level’ with this movie.

Sunshine is an amazing sci-fi film. I own it, too, and have viewed it numerous times. It’s one of those little known gems that will undoubtedly stand the test of time and be a fan favorite for decades to come.

Just saw "Her" with Joaquin Phoenix

subtle, meaningful, complex, thought provoking.

Some classify ‘Her’ as a chick flick, but I probably have watched that film four times, if not five (And no, I’m not a chick😁). Every time I watch it, I seem to pick something new from it with every viewing. I honestly think we’re living in a world where we are not that far away where AI is becoming more main stream in our lives, homes and even in our cars. You’re right though, it is a very thought-provoking movie, and in the not ‘too distant future’, I do think AI will be more personalized to our personas.

But anyways, Joaquin Phoenix does a really nice job in this movie, and you can see how guarded he is in the beginning of the movie (Due to his divorce) and how he essentially opens up to a character that he can’t physically see, but develops a relationship/bond with something that he feels that understands him on a very personal/intimate movie.

Fun fact about this movie: Spike Jonze [The director of Her], actually never used Scarlett Johansson as the original AI voice, but after he post-directed the movie, he wasn’t content with the original females voice, so he contacted Scarlett Johansson to see if she would be interested for the voice role, and then had to explain to the original female actor that they were going to dub her voice over With Scarlett Johanssons.

The Spiderman reboots are terrible. I like Tom Holland as an actor, but it’s ‘over the top’ they had to add in way to many comical theatrics, the CGI is kinda expected in certain genre of films today, but still, but both of them seem messy, The only Spiderman’s films I actually liked was with Tobey Maguire.

I also prefer the ones with Toby.

Essentially all I can really say without divulging too much information, this is a murder mystery, in which an FBI agent (Elizabeth Olsen) and a conservation warden (Jeremy Renner) help track down a murder on an Indian reservation.

I watched this a few days back, (I probably viewed this film at least four times, if not more). I would never say this about any movie, but I rank this in one of my favorite movies of all time. The acting is spot on, the scenery is absolutely stunning, the storyline was executed perfectly and there is an excellent transition point in the Plot showing exactly how things played out in the case of the murder [Its the only scene with John Bernthal, which was rather brutal, but portrayed very realistically.]

I like Jeremy Renner as an actor, but he is on another level in this movie. Elizabeth Olsen did a stellar job portraying the female FBI agent.

Seriously, watch this film if you haven’t, I can nitpick films all day long, but this one I find perfect. It’s a culmination of suspense/storytelling and supposedly based on some realistic events. Plus, you get to see some Indian culture in this movie, which I thought was really fascinating to see.

Side note:

The director of the movie also has contributions to the first ‘Sicario’ and ‘Hell or Highwater’ with Chris Pine/Ben Foster. Which those films are also excellent.

Agreed on everything! Great films (Wind River, Sicario, Sicario: Day of the Soldado (which Sheridan wrote as well) and Hell or High Water). Dude's got writing chops, that's for sure.

How would you compare Salt with "Wanted"?

I think I have been discouraged with every AvP movie since the original Predator (which was excellent) and every Alien movie since Aliens. I guess I'd be willing to rent it. :)

I am a huge fan of The Thing. I'll check it out, hopefully I can stream it via Netflicks.

Salt was more of Jolie being badass rather than wanted when she was meant to be the main female lead but she ended up just being wasted because they wanted to progress the movie too fast and really didn’t evaluate her life more than that b.s they pulled .
