Vince Gilligan: El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie (2019)

Picks up (immediately) where the show left off and follows Jesse Pinkman as he tries to navigate life while on the run from the law after being freed from being held captive and forced to cook meth. That's about all there is to it plot wise, without spoiling too much.

I really wanted to like this more than I (think I) did. Obviously it all needs a bit more time to sink in properly, but having just finished the film I can't help but feel a bit underwhelmed. There were great scenes with properly constructed tension, great drama and it was nice to see some familiar faces again, but as a whole it felt more like an extended episode of the show, as opposed to a final episode of a piece of art that really has few contemporaries when it comes to storytelling and in general constructing a world with a compelling narrative, as well as characters you actually care for.

Then again, it could be that my expectations were grossly eggarated, Breaking Bad being one of my all time favorite shows. Still, I liked it well enough and will most likely revisit the film at a later date. The musical choices were, once again, top notch, and now I'm going to go listen to Jim White's Static On The Radio. PSA: Don't go on Youtube if you haven't seen the film, comments will probably be ripe with spoilers.

RIP Robert Forster.

I enjoyed it for what it is. It also felt like an extended episode to the seasons to me as well. I don't think that it's a bad thing either. I was pleased to see that Vince was the master behind the whole thing. I enjoy his art direction and taste for suspense, drama, and riveting scenes.

I think there is always something else that could be told or explored with Breaking Bad and it's offshoots like Better Caul Saul, and that keeps us, the audience, always wanting more.

Agree. Anything Breaking Bad is the best stuff since the early HBO days of Rome, Deadwood, Carnivale. a2

Ryś (The Lynx). A 1982 film directed by Stanisław Różewicz. In Polish with English subtitles. I saw it on Netflix, also available on Prime Video.

Set in rural occupied Poland during WW II; a priest trying to decide how to deal with a young resistance fighter's wish to confess in advance and obtain absolution for his intent to assassinate (on orders from above) a purported traitor who lives in the priest's village.

cover art for Rys (The Lynx, 1982).jpg
One set of twists is that the kid has a conscience and so wants absolution for the sin of killing another human being, whether what he's been sent to do is plain murder or merely dispatching a traitor. On the other hand he assures the priest he must kill anyway since his alternative is to be shot for disobedience. His clarity on that point is like a ship's bell tolling.

Another twist is a fairly predictable spoiler so let's just say it's a barely revealed wonderment about how traitorous is the alleged traitor. We're also led to wonder if clearing that question up should make a difference in what the priest will finally consider are his own options.

And there are more twists, "real" or just imagined, not to mention daydreams, nightmares, suspicions, anticipations, flashbacks and a couple kitchen sinks, some nifty organ music, ticking clocks, grasses waving in fields and trees looking like the wrath of God found them. And a horse, and the horse is charming.
Right so the film is 82 minutes of an attempt to portray some fundamental moral quandaries using excellent settings, costumes and cinematography plus a bunch of compellingly attractive actors to keep a viewer from wondering whether to bail on the thing or stick with it.

If I had quit the browser accidentally I probably wouldn't have relaunched it. On balance I found it more than a bit slow moving, dark but barely misses being a raft of clichés; not at all sorry I watched it, still wondering how much only happened in whose head and who only wished that might have been the case.

It's one of those films makes you realize about every ten minutes that now you know what's going on, but didn't before, until the next moment when you realize you definitely didn't have that sorted either, but now, well now it's finally and precisely unsettled: a time of war.

You know, the more I think about the film the more I'm inclined to agree with you. Specifically in that the format being what it was wasn't really all that bad, just not something I expected perhaps? Be that as it may, I'm leaning heavily in the direction of it being a good film and a proper sendoff to the series. Now if only the next season of BCS would be on Netflix like tomorrow, all would be well.

Great shows the lot of them, but the best HBO show in my opinion will always be OZ. Not many faults in that one.

We missed OZ. Will check it out for sure. Thanks. a2

I recently watched Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Joker, they were both really good films, I recommend watching them!

I saw Once Upon a Time in Hollywood in the theater around Labor Day. It was entertaining.

I already mentioned seeing Yesterday and resisting giving it a another plug. I wasn’t expecting just how good it was. The dialogue, character, dry humor, and a cute and refreshing story. I really enjoyed it.

Avatar (2009)- A visually beautiful knock your socks off CGI science fiction, adventure masterpiece, where the entire world of Pandora is rendered. Avatar 2 estimated release Dec 2021, only 12 years later.

Harsh Times [2006]

So, if you liked Training Day, you probably would like Harsh Times with Christian Bale. Not many viewers are probably aware he made this movie, it was pretty low budget, (was shot in just 24 days out in Los Angeles). But anyways, it’s basically about an honorably discharged military soldier Who is trying to make it as a Police officer, but fails to do so with the LAPD, and in the midst of him trying to find a job, he gets tied up in the wrong side hobbies. It Kinda/sorta shows the PTSD that Bale endures in this movie and how his anger is triggered through various obstacles he has to overcome through some poor decision making.

The director David Ayer, [who also directed Training Day and End of watch] had Christian Bale train a specific lingo in the speech in the movie to fit his character and demonstrate how they do talk in certain parts of the Hispanic community.

I personally really liked this movie, but it is a _very_ extreme ‘hit or miss’ for some viewers, but I’m also fond of Christian Bale‘s acting dynamics throughout his acting career, this being one of the primary films.

Pocahontas set in space.
Dances With Wolves in space. I’ve heard it before. 😝 My wife is generally negative regarding science fiction. The theme is similar, but Dances with Wolves is closer, but the Indians don’t win.

That said, besides the related theme, there is nothing similar and everything original in Cameron’s highly creative, exhilarating and beautiful film. Ten years old and it is still completely unique and unmatched in the fidelity, and integration of live action with computer generated graphics, an artificial ecosystem, created to wow us, heart pounding action, at least for some of us. 😍

I remember wondering how the heck can bows and arrows ever win against advance technology. Well, I found out.

Now if you don’t like it, I have no argument that will sway you and that’s ok. :)

I don’t dislike it. It’s just more of a visual story than a story if you know what I mean.

I’m sure I’ll watch the sequels at some point when they come out. But not until they are on TV.

That’s one of those movies I watched as a kid, that did not scare me like The Thing, The Blob, Caltiki the Immortal Monster, The Crawling Eye or The Creature from the Black Lagoon, but it did make me very uneasy. At least the end of the movie ended with a hint of positiveness, but the challenge would still have been daunting. It’s similar to The Thing (1982) and Invaders from Mars in atmosphere.
