Nice. Binging on this ‘trio’ Right now. Decided to watch the first John Wick the other night, awesome movie (Aside from some of the shoddy Russian acting. ) I watched John Wick 2 in the past, I don’t remember being impressed by that one, but I’m gonna give it another shot to be fair. I have not seen the third John Wick yet, heard good things.
Yep, it was a good movie. I also enjoyed the first two. I think John Wick is one of those rare series that actually do well each time. I think especially in this case it helps since each successive movie is really a continuation from the previous one. Basically, they're still telling the first and original story and not making up new adventures and new problems to solve as so many other movie franchises do.

I didn’t dislike 2 but felt a bit meh with it, but 3 was pretty good. I’ll certainly watch 4.

Is Ghost in the Shell movie a remake of the anime from 1995 or a different story?

If its a remake I would rather watch the original because I am up for some adult anime(as in targeted towards adult audiences)

Ghost in the Shell with Scarlett Johansson surrounds the narrative that was used in the 1995 version.

This is probably one of my all-time favorite sci-fi films. Scarlett Johansson does a really nice job with the role, decent villain, good action scenes, [CGI is heavily used, but expected/executes nicely] and a cyberpunk-ish like musical score that reels you in. Altogether, I’d recommend it. I never watched the anime versions or care to either, as that genre doesn’t appeal to me.

Technically, the 2017 live action film and the 1995 anime are both based on the original 89/90 manga. So this gets into one of those discussions about whether the 2017 is simply another take on the original source, or, if it's by way of the fact there was a previous movie, a bit of a "remake".

At any rate, if you like anime, stick with the anime, the live film is decent, but the '95 film is spectacular.

Ad Astra (2019). Very enjoyable movie, but whoever decided to advertise it as an action/space movie should be fired immediately. This is a slow paced movie of introspective nature.

Needed some mindless action fix with good sound effect to go with my headphones

Settled with Pacific Rim this evening.

Rewatch of Phantom Thread.

best line--

“I... It’s no business of ours what Mrs. Rose decides to do with her life, but she can no longer behave like this in a dress from the House of Woodcock.”

-- uttered in genteel outrage by the character Alma (Vicky Krieps), arms full of emerald green brocade, after she has helped remove a high couture gown from the body of the scandalously passed out Barbara Rose (Harriet Sansom Harris) in order to return it to the designer, Reynolds Woodcock (Daniel Day-Lewis), who demanded that it be retrieved after seeing the unconscious Mrs. Rose carried away from the dais at her own (not her first) wedding reception.

I really do like this movie enough to watch it yet again once in awhile. There's a conversation about its minor flaws back there in this thread somewhere in the spring of 2018, but none of the faulty bits are enough to keep me from another viewing on occasion. Beautiful cinematography.

P.T. is a master craftsman(my all-time favorite), in the art of film making.

Like a dummy I rented that twice before buying a download after I realized it's going to be one of those film I will like to watch again and again. I can even forgive the rather odd soundtrack after the third viewing..

John Carpenter: Prince of Darkness (1987)

There's something strange (and green), and possibly sinister brewing in the basement of an old church. A priest who stumbles upon the cylinder of liquid gathers a team of scientists to help make sense of the situation.

I can't believe I hadn't seen this one in it's entirety before. I remember starting this years and years ago, but for some reason never got to finish it. Well now that I have, I have to say I liked it. Sure, there's cheesy dialogue (the joke about a Jewish mother meeting her daughter's husband to be comes to mind..), but the music and general atmosphere are top notch. A really fun movie to watch with a couple of drams of whisky.

Yeah, it's terrific, the always great Carpenter collaborator Donald Pleasence, some Big Trouble folks (Wong!), a crazy concept outside of the normal horror tropes (it's kind of "scifi/horror" really), plus Alice Cooper :D

"You will not be saved by the god Plutonium."

Well said! The fact that Pleasence's character is (apparently at least in the DVD subtitles) named Father Loomis is a nice touch, although in the film his name is never used.

Continuing with greatness.

John Carpenter: Escape from New York (1981)

When Air Force One crash lands in Manhattan, an island that has been converted into a prison housing the worst of the worst, there's only one man and his eyepatch that could possibly rescue the president and in doing so prevent a devastating chain of events.

One of my favorites of Carpenter's, and definitely my favorite film of Kurt Russel's. Great casting, the music once again is superb and the whole thing is just fun to watch, and then rewatch. The supporting cast are a varied bunch of characters (Harry Dean Stanton rarely disappoints, and you just can't go wrong with Lee Van Cleef), and the person who made the call to design The Duke's Cadillac with chandeliers as hood ornaments deserves some sort of award.

@Mefisto It's so good, it even holds up really well though a few of the F/X shots / tech concepts are a little dated.

Holy hell, Escape from L.A. is a total trainwreck, hahaha, rewatched that in the last several months. The "surfing scene" is so bad, we had to rewatch it like 3 times :D

We're doing a 30 days of Halloween scary movies, last year, we dumped about 50 into an online list randomizer and mostly stuck with the evening's selection (we had a few overrides for a sequel coming up before the previous movie). Not doing that this year, so we need to make some decisions!

Alita: Battle Angel (2019)- Wow, I like this movie! All sorts of story elements (hunter killers, corruption, motoball, a floating city in the sky that everyone in Iron City dreams about going to) that build on one another, leading to a climatic motoball match. Only one problem, that was not the climax and it was left off, ie this story was structured as a two movie story, and it seems doubtful based on the box office, the sequel will be made. When she stands at the end of the movie with her glowing sword pointed at Zalem, I craved more. And then the credits ran. 🥺

The movie doesn't have a name. Seems to be the same two people and the woman, won't stop grunting and yelling. I don't see any future awards for this movie.

Yeeeeah, L.A. is a whole different bag, although I must admit that I do get a kick out of watching it every ten years or so. Now that I think about it, it's about time for a rewatch!

The VVitch (2015) The sins of the father damn this Puritan family into coming face to face with the title character.

While Robert Eggers debut is not scary, there is a bit of The Thing level dread as the story moves along. Puritan patriach William takes his family out of the safe confines of a colony-like community to farm elsewhere near a remote forest.

Soon his newborn child vanishes, the eldest son becomes deathly ill after getting lost in the woods, and the young twins wind up possessed and die.

Is it all the work of eldest daughter Thomasin who resents her chores, prayers and life?

The increasingly mad mom Katherine whose loss drives her into the most gruesome end?

Or the black billy goat Black Phillip whispering bad tidings into certain ears that inspires everyone to go just more than a little mad?

I won't spoil the ending but this is one of those movies that pays off if you stick with it.

Eggers spent years researching Puritan and early colonial life and it shows handsomely. A caveat, this flows a lot better with the subtitles turned on due to the use of Old English dialect.

A very good thriller. I'll keep an eye on Eggers future works including The Lighthouse. Looking forward to seeing what Willem DeFoe brings to that.

The Great Wall (2017) The great snooze is more like it.

This is what happens when Zhang Yimou doesn't work from his own script or visual ideas.

The miscast of Matt Damon as a medieval archer sent to procure the black powder (gun powder) from the Chinese, sees his mercenary join the fight at the title wonder against the horde of man eating lizards the Tao Tei. No amount of cgi can make me believe Damon is a skilled archer.

Not even Canto pop star/actor Andy Lau singing a funeral dirge can save this one.

Johnnie To's Office This was completely lost on me. An occasional musical number interuots this Hong Kong tale of a Lehman Brothers-like company that tanks hard.

But it is always nice to see Chow Yun Fat in a suit etc. (be it modern or period). I cannot really comment on this because I just did not get the corporate stuff.

Love this movie, it is one of my all time favorites.

Escape From New York remains my all time favorite movie.💕

Really like The VVitch. The atmosphere is perfect throughout, and the slow pacing works wonderfully.

Definately looking forward to The Lighthouse too, there was a showing here on a film festival but it was sold out in minutes about a month beforehand. Let's see if it opens a tad wider sometime in the near future, but even if it doesn't, I have a feeling the film will find it's way into my shelf in one format or another.

So I officially re-watched John Wick 2, I still feel as I did before (Which was kind of apathetic), it seems a bit lackluster compared to the first one, maybe it’s because the plot in this one was somewhat messy, but I think the first John Wick executed it nicely, because it was so simple in terms of the whole motive behind the movie. But still, not bad at all, and if somebody like the first John Wick, then you probably would like the second one that much more.

I also watched John Wick 3 Parabellum, I liked it, Halle Berry was a nice addition, and I thought her scenes were great, even though she has a short role in the movie. Actually, one of my favorite characters in John Wick 3 was ‘The Adjudicator’, she was devious and cold, and obviously she’ll be back for the 4th installment. The action scenes were of course well choreographed. [Also, Much more ‘ninja-esque’ in Parabellum.]

What I find interesting about these three movies is how little dialogue Keanu has, but the amount of physicality he endures is pretty extreme, especially when this whole trilogy started in 2014 being near 50, not an easy task at his age, but impressive.
